Cheered me up
It was good to sip!
Cold and icy

I noticed how light shines through the leaves of this plant. The leaves are spread out so the light gets to most of them. Looking at trees, I can see the leaves do the same thing. They spread out and don’t overlap much. If you look closely at trees and other plants you can see the leaf pattern fitting together like a jigsaw puzzle. Sometimes when you see a bush the leaves are all on the outside, close fitting, and the centre is just branches and twigs. The internal area has been shaded out by the ball of leaves around it. Maximum photosynthesis and maximum food for the plants. Nature is wonderful, and evolution is amazing.

I was cooking an evening meal and decided to open a bottle of rosé brut wine to go with it. It was very warm in the kitchen, but I didn’t think much about it as I took the wine out of the fridge. I peeled off the foil round the neck and loosened the wire around the cork. Then I had to check the food, stir it, add herbs. Suddenly…
BANG!
The cork had come flying out of the bottle, wine started to bubble out of the bottle all over the kitchen counter. I had to mop it up. I think about a quarter of the bottle was gone! It just shows how hot it was. Next time the wine is staying in the fridge till the food is ready!

Today’s #bandofsketchers prompt was monochrome. I did a monochrome drawing in black conte crayon of my husband having a nap. When I took a photo it looked brown under my kitchen lights but I used a black and white filter and autocolour to get it looking right. This is the first sketch in a new A5 size sketchbook.

Our back yard is blooming despite my hubby putting icecubes in the hanging baskets! Now I need help cutting back the main garden, I need help. We are not fit enough to do it anymore and what we’re shrubs have turned into trees and huge bushes. I know the neighbours are not pleased but we don’t have the serious finances to tackle it plus we want it to remain a wildlife haven. Goodness knows what we can do about it. Maybe get on one of these TV rescue programmes!

This is a lovely ceramic pestle and mortar I bought at a craft Market a few years ago. I was crushing some garlic for a chilli last night and decided to use this instead of my garlic press which falls apart every time I try and crush more than one clove of garlic.
But thinking about it there are a couple of coincidences linked with it. Last Monday I was wearing a mortar board. Not much of a coincidence, but then after our meal I did a quick crossword clue ‘pounding tool, used with a mortar’? Of course I got the answer

The UK’s leading feline charity has issued urgent advice on keeping pets sun safe as temperatures continue to soar. Following a red warning for extreme heat from the Met Office, Cats Protection is urging people to take extra precautions to protect their pets. We have a red warning for extreme hot weather in the UK next Monday and Tuesday. Today (Sunday) is forecast to be over 30°C and not cooling to below that at night, then on Monday and Tuesday hot weather coming up from Spain is heading our way. Apparently its been up to 47° in places over on the continent with wild fires burning in Spain and Portugal. The weather service here, the Meteorological office, is concerned that additional deaths will occur because of it. They think there may be a few thousand extra deaths which is worrying. The highest temperature in the UK was in 2020, then it got to 37.8°C. This is a considerable increase above that.
The trouble here is that a lot of buildings are old, they are badly insulated so they don’t keep the heat in in winter or out in summer. Very few properties have air conditioning. I’m going to be sitting here with the fan on and a bottle of frozen water in front of it. What fun. X

Who am I talking to?
Why am I here?
Do I bore you
With this blog.
Expressing myself
Sharing my thoughts
Or is it just an echo chamber
Like vanity publishing.
Do you want me to be here?
Or should I desist.
Stop all this?

I was discussing poppies with a friend today who wanted to find out what a certain poppy was. I identified it as an oriental poppy. She then showed me another one which had a great ruff of petals. I thought it was a double so checked on the Internet and it was. I also love many different poppies. Californian, Himalayan, Welsh, I’m sure there are more types than that but I’m not sure of them. What I really like is the variety of colours and shapes they come in. This photo was taken above Bovisand Bay in Devon. I took a few photos of them. The grass was so dry it could have been hay.
