Work in progress. Needs work on the beach which I think is a bit dark…. I was trying to get a feeling of sand. This is a small commission so I’m trying for a realistic look. It’s based on a drone photo I saw online but it’s not an exact copy, just using it to see how the wavelets ripple onto the shore.
Sundays #bandofsketchers prompt was Antarctica. As penguins live in Antarctica I decided to draw one swimming in the sea. I did think about drawing them huddled together with chicks but they look so streamlined in the water. As usual a felt pen drawing.
Starting a painting of a beach and the sea from above. It’s going to show the surf and the pebbles and sand. I want it to be gentle, a meditation, no words, no footsteps in the sand, just the quiet lapping of water as the waves roll in and out. A peaceful memory as a painting for a friend.
Looking out of our house, I can see gardens on the side and rear of the house, but a grey factory building in front. I wish we had a view of the sea or countryside. The road in front of our house is on a steep hill, and quite often cars roar up and down it, ambulances rush by with sirens blaring, or motorbikes speed up, exhausts popping and banging. The hill is one of the steepest in the area and seems sometimes to be a racetrack! Oh to see a yatch in the distance, sails catching the rising or setting sun. That would be magical.
Memory of a trip to the Southwest of England. We stopped off at a lovely sea cove, and on the cliffs above it there were bright red poppies. These were so cheering, waving in the breeze along with rough stalks of grass. I need to paint a picture of a poppy field, this might be an inspiration to work from.
I’m swimming in a sea of loss
Dashed against rocks
Spinning in a whirlpool
With weeds tangling my feet.
Around me are grey souls
I don’t recognise them
But they reach out to grab me
Hands come close
Trying to drag me down
Must try and float
Look for the surface light
For the blue sky
For a rescue boat.
Staring into space
Staring over the sea
A lone figure, that is me.
I want silence,
or quiet waves lapping
A gentle breeze.
Not lonely, just bored.
Every Sunday was boring
In my youth
Shops shut
Nothing to see or do!
Now I feel the same
No-one is to blame!
But I’m bored,
So bored…
Bored
Looking out from the hotel over the Channel she worried about her son. Where was he? Anxiety weighed like a heavy stone on her heart. What if she never saw him again?
The dinghy had not been seen since sunset, when it had been out on the sandbar fishing for mackerel, but no one had called the lifeboat and they were not that overdue. Still, a mother can have a sense about these things. She knew in her bones… Something was wrong.
A shadow fell across her as the sun started to set again. She turned her head to look. She heard his voice…
‘Mum?’….
‘Can you do my washing this weekend?’
It was a grey, overcast day at Bovisand yesterday. The port of Plymouth off to the right of this photo was busy. There is a breakwater to protect the harbour and make the inlet safe as ships and boats travel up to the Tamar and Plym Rivers among others that flow into the sea here. But because of the grey light and indistinct sea surface, some of the ships seemed to be floating in the sky! In the distance is the coast of Cornwall. The Tamar river is on the boundary between England’s two most westerly counties. Warm and welcoming in the summer. It can be cold and wet, blustery and stormy at all times of the year. But a very beautiful place to visit.
Today’s #bandofsketchers prompt was Sea. I tried to draw waves on a sea with felt pens but I didn’t like it so I’ve played with it digitally to add texture in some places and blur other areas. I’m not sure about it, but not all drawings are successful. I think it looks like a photo from a camera with smudges on its lens.
