Usk challenge Thursday

Black and white and then coloured in sketch. View from my kitchen window out over the cherry tree in the garden. A few cherries are starting to ripen, but most are still green. The plants on the windowsill have grown up so they seem to merge into the garden. I’ve limited the palette of the pots and ornaments so that it is not overpowering the bottom of the drawing. My sanctuary away from the rain…

Contours. I’ve always liked them. On maps, on artworks. I used to have an etch a sketch and I got good at drawing mazes on it. I would draw lines, round and round from the centre, build in dead ends, and spend hours creating structure. That’s basically what this is, not that there are any dead ends, apart from where I made mistakes.

Fish trapped in glass

_20200531_215512

‘I  admit it’ , she said, ‘ I am a hoarder’ .

‘We are concerned about your safety’, said the officer. ‘I have to tell you that, unless you clear up, your home is at risk’.

She closed the door as he left, and thought about what he had said. ‘this is my home’ she thought. ‘But everything I have means something, I love all my nic nacks, my ornaments’.

Reluctantly she started to look through her things, ‘this is the glass cat with the fish, nan gave it me, what shall I do?’

The knock on the door a fortnight later jarred her out of her reverie. ‘who is it?’, ‘your housing officer’ came the reply.

‘Go Away!’ she shouted. ‘I don’t want to see you!’

‘I’m afraid you must. I have a notice of seeking possession here if you won’t work with me!’

‘Work with you? All you did was come round and tell me off!’

‘anyway’ she said ‘I’m buying the house’.

The officer was confused. ‘What do you mean?’ he shouted through the letterbox.

‘My nans glass cat! – turns out it belonged to someone famous, priceless, they called it on the antique street show’.

Silence.

‘I’m rich she said, now Go Away!’

Drawing really helps keep me calm. This is another doodle I started this morning. I’ve mirrored it to make it more symmetrical and to create a new pattern.

I like drawing in black ink, and by mirroring, it makes a simple act of putting pen to paper more complex.

I may cover the whole page. Might take a few more hours…..

Limerick

DSC_2636

When I try and write limericks they sometimes go OK and other times they are a bit rubbish. With this one I was trying to write about something humorous about a cat in a box. But I found rhyming box too hard and swapped it round with cat. So I came up with this ditty… Not pretty…

A box was full up with a cat

Who also liked wearing a hat

He tried on a beret

That belonged to a ferret.

And shared all his food with a bat…

I enjoy drawing contours, daft I know. It was very time consuming doing this and eventually I decided to stop and leave some white paper showing.

The nuclei of the pattern were coloured dots created from ink coming through the back of the previous page. My hubby thinks they look like electron shells for benzene? I think I understand where he’s coming from. I’m starting a course on illustration on Monday. Trying to calm last minute nerves with a little drawing meditation. Doing this creates flow, and I forget the time, day, the stresses of the world around me.
