Mural painting.

What job would you do for free?

One of my old murals. I would love to still be doing these and if I had enough money to live on I would volunteer to do things like this for free. Maybe in a children’s ward, or some landscapes for a community centre. I have actually done one or two for free as a volunteer in the past. My first was painting the scenery at my senior school a few decades ago. I wish I’d got photos of it.

My only problem is my health. I can’t move as well as I used to and my balance is not good. I sake a lot so I can’t paint as smooth a line as I did in the past. Age seems to be catching up with me. It’s frustrating because this is the sort of thing I love doing. I get great satisfaction from it. I cannot remember when I didn’t paint or draw. It has been my life when I’ve been able to do it.

Light

What a strange thing light is. It gets into corners, shines brightly and illuminates. You can see it at a distance even if it’s millions or billions of miles away. It might be made up of packets of energy (photons) or waves. It has different wavelengths for different colours and is part of the electromagnetic spectrum. It moves at the speed of light in a vacuum. But slower in an atmosphere or travelling through another medium like water or glass. It can be refracted (bent) depending on the wavelength which is why Sir Issac Newton found it was made up of a spectrum of rainbow colours when he passed a beam of daylight through a prism in a darkened room.

Apart from the scientific details which I only have a sketchy knowledge of, there are lots of phrases that are used in English :

Shed a light on it, light of my life, light at the end of the tunnel, thunder and lightning, the light fantastic, by the light of the stars.

Light is a fascinating subject.

Variations on a Cross

An Easter symbol, digitally manipulated. Today is Christian Good Friday when Jesus was crucified. I thought I would try creating something that looked slightly baroque but combined with a simple brown cross shape. I added light on the final panel. I’m not religious, but at this time of year the symbology and ideas of peace and love stick with me. I hope this is OK and does not cause offence.

Yo-yo’s

Twirling, whirling, swirling.

Artrage app using metallic digital pens and flood fill, then saving the image and adding extra lines to it, then flipping one side so it’s not quite symmetrical. The red and greens are complimentary colours so they stand out against each other where they haven’t blended together.

Books….

Books, important things

Full of knowledge

Truth and lies

Freedom to think

Words have strength

Shout out loud

Of time and history.

So many subjects

Art, Biology, Cheese and wine

Gullivers travels

Earth and sky.

Let them live,

Don’t ban books

Or burn them

Fahrenheit 451

Flames lick away

Knowledge, peace, understanding

A bookshelf a day

Keeps misunderstanding

At bay.

Athletics

What Olympic sports do you enjoy watching the most?

I actually like a lot of the sports in the Olympics, and that includes some of the newer sports such as mountain biking and climbing. But I guess my favourites are track and field events (including para athletics). I think that’s because I grew up watching people like Mary Peters and Sebastian Coe among others. So often you would see people beating World and Olympic records. My only regret was when they may have been found to be cheating. Using drugs to enhance their performances. Also I think more modern athletics has too much hype. I know the athletes need to fund their careers, but I liked the simpler times. One of my favourite films is Chariots of Fire. Where athletes were far more moral and honest than some of them appear to be now, or maybe that’s just my perception?
