I am a local artist in Stoke-on-Trent and about 11 or 12 years ago I painted a series of murals in the Bennett suite at the Leopard Hotel in Burslem. Recently my paintings have appeared on a book, on Midlands Today a BBC local TV channel, the Sentinel newspaper and on a ghost hunting website. All without my permission. I hold the copyright for the images and I would like people to contact me if they wish to use them. The image is my painting of my painting of the Burslem Riot of 1842. I’ve contacted the people who used them but only one has responded so I have given her retrospective permission. What can I do?

I was thinking today that we are odd things. A mammal walking around with a lump of pinkish grey matter a bit like blancmange in our heads. Not just us, but all mammals and most animals are the same.

A pink lump with nerves running to and from it, directing movement, thought, feelings, sensations, memories, dreams, everything…

In the past the heart was thought to be the central control of the body, if the heart stopped the body died. Then science discovered the brain. All its strange quirks. Doctors recognised physical and mental diseases. The brain is a marvel, a wonder. Think about it. Geniuses like Leonardo or Einstein had slightly better brains, which affected the world…

Silly drawing, but where does the phrase come from….? People use this symbol to mean they agree with you, or to ‘thumb a lift’ when they are hitch hiking… Thumbs have been raised for decades. There was a TV programme in the seventies where the main character would put his thumbs up to show he was happy. Even Facebook uses it as their like symbol. So where does it spring from? Anyone know?

Consequences

I like helping people. But that can cause problems. I’ve offered to give a friend a lift tonight, but I also give someone else a regular lift. The logistics are giving a lift, doing something at the venue, then picking the other person up and taking her to the venue. Then giving both a lift home…. Phew!

As my hubby says, sometimes I’m too helpful! I hope it all works out OK….

Has anyone else been in a similar dilemma?

What is up with WordPress?

I want to reply to a friend who commented that some test results were good, which is great, but WordPress won’t let me reply. It keeps coming up with an error message. Something like ‘user cannot see your reply’ and ‘user approval not given’ or something like that. It’s very irritating when technology allows you to make friends over the Internet with people all over the world, then stops you communicating!

It might be something to do with my provider. I still have a ‘saving of draft failed.’ message that one of WordPress’s ‘happiness’ support workers could not resolve.

I’m not exactly sure what to do. This might be a one off between me and the other user, or it might be with everyone? We will see.

FB_IMG_1572912413208 Ten years ago, and before that, I was painting Jupiter. I love the planet, though its atmosphere is hellishly difficult to paint, swirls that meld into one another, colours that blend and merge.

I think I said it was like knitting the painting, because I built it up band by band.

Now I want to do more in the astronomical area. I’m thinking of painting on perspex if I can get the right effects. I woukd do something like the ‘pillars of creation’ dusty nebula. I am thinking of having different layers. How I would display it, and how accurate it would be? I don’t know-yet!

I don’t know what I wanted to look like, but I think it went with the horror film theme for the film Humanus.

I enjoyed it, it was quirky, with lots of ideas. You can tell its made by an amateur group, but it’s charming. Set in a world where people go to a waiting room when they die, and something is causing headless corpses. It was fun to be in ans to see. It might even get a release on TV…

For a laugh earlier in the year me and my hubby agreed to be extras in a local film. We didn’t do much except go into a building for a seance and then come out and drive away. I don’t even know if we will still be in it, we might be on the cutting room floor! But at least we get to see the premiere! I’ve got to go and get some face paint as it’s fancy dress. I’m glad, I don’t want to be recognised. Hopefully it will be a bit if fun…. And the TV people are coming. I might go and hide in a corner!

Hanging basket in November

My hanging baskets are still in flower on 4th November! My Christmas cactus is coming into flower on the window ledge, global warming certainly is having an effect on plant life.

The baskets were planted up at a nursery in May and we have had them ever since. They have done really well. The plants are begonias I think, but there are other flowers in there still including fushias. I’m not emptying them till the frosts get them. It’s so nice to look out the window at some colour at this time of year.
