Random tree

IMG_20191024_105519_549_optimized

Photo taken last Thursday in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent. Spreading sideways, this tree seems to have had a haircut leaving all the horizontal branches but nothing hanging down. Also it’s still got a lot of leaves where the trees next to it are just about bare. It’s random because it’s just a street tree, the fence and road and car don’t really enhance the picture. It is all about horizontals I guess.

Circle three

A cat can curl up here,

Sit on my knee.

Or on the pile of washing,

Curled up and snug.

Dreaming of flying birds.

Thinking of whizzing leaves,

Warm and toasty,

Curled up and snug.

Winter shivers the bones,

Rain drips down necks,

Sun sets early,

Curled up and snug.

Food to eat and water to drink,

Warm and draft free

Thinking of sitting in a tree.

Curled up and snug…..

Favourite film

Tony Curtis and Kirk Douglas fight each other for the love of a woman Janet Leigh who plays Morgana, she is kidnapped by Curtis but then taken captive by an English king and taken to his castle. Curtis is maimed and makes his way back to the vikings. The vikings attack the English and the outcome is resolved in battle.

I don’t want to go into details because you may not have seen it. I think it was made in the early 1958. The music is tremendous. There is a beautiful theme enhancing  rip roaring, death defying fight scenes.  I fell in love with Tony Curtis when I saw it as a child. He was always ‘my hero’. I’m showing my age!

Painting from the 1980’s

FB_IMG_1567726248076

I have a few images of my old paintings on slides. I would like to get them transferred onto a digital platform before they deteriorate too much. This painting was actually bought by our old MP, Mark Fisher, and I was really proud to have known him. Unfortunately he passed away a few years ago.

It’s funny how you find things and they bring back old memories. This painting was done of a friend. I deliberately tried to alter the angles of the window to make it more atmospheric. I would like to do more portraits if anyone is interested.

Acorns

DSC_2469My hubby collected these from under a huge Oak tree about a month ago and he’s planted them in pots in the garden! About fifty of them. I’m not sure if they will germinate, if they do we will need to find a very large field to plant them in. They can grow with the Walnut saplings that the squirrel has planted in the garden, and the Ash tree saplings, and sycamore saplings that have self seeded. Our garden is turning into a wood. X

Firework night

sketch-1572726737798

Remember remember the fifth of November, gunpowder, treason and plot….

That’s the rhyme we learn as children in the UK to remember the date of the gunpowder plot when Guy Fawkes tried to blow up parliament in the reign of James 1st I think? Hopefully no one will try to do the same thing again.

There is a party mood around this time of year. People build bonfires and place effigies of ‘Guy’ on them. (Children go out and collect change from people by making their own Guys and asking for ‘a penny for the Guy’.).

Fireworks are set off to celebrate. Nowadays people tend to go to organised displays. There sometimes are private bonfire parties and you can buy very big fireworks. However there are quite a few injuries every year with burns being a major factor.

I remember spinning Catherine wheels, volcanoes, bangers, rockets and roman candles and other old favourite fireworks from my childhood. My best memory was writing my name with a sparkler (a metal stick with a burning chemical on it that sparkled when you waved it about when it was lit).

Food was jacket potatoes cooked till the skin was flakey and black, with lots of butter and salt. Fried onions and sausages and tomato ketchup.

We always built the bonfire high over several days. We didn’t know you were supposed to build it on the day as hedgehogs could be hibernating under the pile of wood.

Good memories. Now I stay in and keep the cats safe and secure.

Barometer reading

My barometer pressures have dropped from about 1010 yesterday to 970 on my traditional barometer and 959 on my electric weather station. There is always a discrepancy of about 10 (millimeters of Mercury?) between the two.

What is ‘pressure’. Pressure is air pressure, the weight of the air pressing down on us from the top of the atmosphere downwards.

The guage on the traditional barometer has gone from fair (gold pointer) to rain with the black pointer.

How is pressure measured? One ‘bar’ of pressure is the average air pressure at sea level. It’s also measured in millimetres of Mercury.  There was a historical experiment to find out about the air pressure. The experimenters put a tube of  mercury upside down in a glass dish. This can leave a vacuum in the top of the tube. If you have the tube and dish at sea level the Mercury will be at a lowed level in the dish. This is because a larger weight of atmosphere is pressing down. Go up a mountain and the level in the dish will rise, because the air pressure up there is lower (less depth of atmosphere).

There is lots of information on sites like Wikipedia about air pressure. They probably describe how the air circulating in the atmosphere causes areas of low and high pressure. The weather is also influenced by the sea and its temperatures and the heating of the Earth’s surface by the sun.

Now I’m drawing November circles

_20191102_001950

I can’t get over the last months drawing challenge so I’ve started a drawing a day in a circle for November.

The first one was just a car outside our house. Not very exciting. What I think I will do is post the pictures every week or so rather than individual ones.

This made me laugh though, my hubby likes having cool feet. He probably won’t wear shoes till December. I think he’s odd but it’s his choice.
