#bandofsketchers ‘hole’

I made a digital drawing based on the #bandofsketchers prompt of ‘hole’. Used my finger and a symmetry tool to create the pattern, then varied it using photodirector app.

The darker, softer image was the first, the other two were edited in photodirector and the images were duplicated in the Layout app.

Local industrial archaeology

Pottery bottle oven, Longport, Stoke-on-Trent. Next to the Trent and Mersey canal. I can’t remember the name of the pottery sorry. I think there are only 32 of these old pottery ovens left in Stoke-on-Trent. A few, like at Middleport pottery and the Gladstone Pottery museum are preserved and in good condition. Others are derelict or semi derelict. A few are just the bases of them left on the ground. Some are being rescued and repurposed, but others are dreadfully neglected as this one is.

Bottle ovens/kilns and enamel kilns burn at different temperatures. They were different shapes, the enamel ones are thinner. The outside bottle shape has a doorway into it and surrounds a cylindrical kiln where the pottery is placed. The pottery itself is stacked in ‘saggars’- round or oval shaped covers that protect the ceramics as the kiln is ‘fired’. These old fashioned kilns were heated with coal. The clay and fires lead to lung diseases, which were also found in local miners. As coal firing was stopped because of the clean air act many of these potteries closed or converted to gas firing in modern kilns. Old photos from the turn of the 19th century show many bottle ovens all over the city and the pall of smoke they created.

Stoke-on-Trent has clay, water and coal in abundance which is why the pottery industry set up here as well as a few other places in the UK. There are many books about the industrial archaeology of the area are available. Other information can be found at the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery in the city centre (Hanley), Stoke-on-Trent.

Too many Ads

I just want to switch off!

I’m watching the last day of the Paralympics. It’s been a wonderful display of talent and sporting prowess. My only dislike? Repetitious ad breaks! Yes I know who the sponsors are. I don’t need reminding every five minutes!

Let me put this out there. I’m not in the market to buy a new car, some new technology, or a new TV. I’m not interested in the channels new dramas, and if I did I wouldn’t need to be told over and over again when it’s on, my short and long term memory is fine… Its still 2019 isn’t it?

Joke….

Feeling owlish

Finger drawn owl

Using the digital drawing app on my phone I just did this. There is no chance of it being celtic as its a finger drawing and my arm shakes too much to draw straight or neatly curved lines.

Still it was fun to use the mirrored curves tool (what is it called?) to create this. I liked adding a bit of p

Celtic horses again.

I do love celtic style art, and I love horses too, but sometimes the complicated patterns are mind boggling. Trying to copy them freehand is just so difficult. Perhaps when I drew this I could have done a third as a template and then copied the pattern for the other two thirds? Or using one of the tools that allow you to draw daisy type patterns digitally. Maybe I will try.

Excellent Blog Post from a Bike-rider and Occupational Therapist in a COVID Unit

“COVID cases are on the rise again and I just finished another tour of duty on the COVID units. Most of my patients this week were not vaccinated. I was vaccinated in December and January. While it is true that I am now magnetic, that’s just my personality and I was that way before the […]

Excellent Blog Post from a Bike-rider and Occupational Therapist in a COVID Unit

I saw this on my friend Martha’s blog and wanted to share it because the misinformation and strange ideas about the vaccines are really dangerous. I am fully vaccinated and hope that if you can get it you do get it. I know that it’s not available everywhere but it should be shared worldwide to try and fight the dreadful virus.

Cat update

My cat is making slow progress but I hope he’s on the mend. He went missing the Wednesday before last and came back on Thursday. He was gone eight days. His paws and legs were covered in a tarry substance. He had hurt his mouth and has an ulcerated eye.

He has eye drops and antibiotics, he’s only able to eat soft food (not much) because of his mouth. He’s always been fussy over food so it’s hard to get him to eat anything. I’ve tried pate type cat foods, cat soup, soft and tiny bits of meat (sorry any vegetarians).

It’s taking time to nurse him so I might not be here much over the next few days. X

Speedy snail 🐌

Thursdays #bandofsketchers prompt was slow so I decided to draw a speedy snail after watching wheelchair racing at the Paralympics. I used the pink and green ink that had bled trough from the other side of the page together with fine black ink pen to indicate a wind or breeze. I guess I could have drawn a couple of leaves being blown about in it or the snails eye stalks being blown back? Do they have four eye stalks… .

Cats eye

Our cat has been to the vets and was kept in overnight. He’s home but among other problems he’s got an ulcer on and inside his eye, it looks very cloudy. He’s on antibiotics and two types of drops. All have to be given at different times (one eye drop four times a day, one eye drop three times a day) antibiotics every twelve hours….

He’s also damaged his soft palette, possibly trying to bite his way out of where he was trapped?

And then his kidney functions are off. I hope he will recover. We will know more after the weekend…
