I tried to make a bird feeder out of a plastic milk carton rather than just throwing it away. I usually have my milk delivered in glass bottles but occasionally when I run out I resort to getting a plastic carton.
I cut three holes in the side, and because seed would just fall out if it was vertical, I turned it horizontal. Also I made the holes big enough so a bird would not get its head stuck, made a little platform by bending the bottom edge down, and cut off any sharp edges.
Partly filled with Niger seed. Hopefully this will work, the handle was pushed over a vertical branch. Will check and make sure birds are OK…..
Today’s challenge on #MendNotTrend (day four) was to create something three dimensional out of string or plastic and perhaps draw it or draw the idea of what it would look like if you didn’t have anything to work with. So I cut a carrier bag in half (down the front, then down the back) leaving it uncut at the bottom. I twisted both sides by the handles to make a plastic ‘rope’. I then looped it through one handle and looped into the loop over and over, finishing at the other handle loop…. See photos. I finally drew the outcome…
Today’s challenge was to draw plastic, so I drew a garden lamp and our plastic waste bin that is covered in glitter. Urban sketches are supposed to be drawn in context so the background is penned in too. Quick sketch about fifteen minutes.
My partners been out putting seeds in the garden, pottering with plant pots and sitting in a chair in the sun.
Two magpies are trying to pull twigs off a buddlea Bush, they are building a raggadey nest in the top of one of the trees. They managed to break off 3 or 4 twigs while we watched.
It was so nice I decided to take a few photos. The first is the chair my partner was sitting in. He didn’t want his photo taken second is the cherry tree. With blossom buds about to burst. The third is another tree at the side of the garden, with a great big waving piece of white plastic in the top of it! I don’t know how it got there but I think it must have blown up in a storm. It doesn’t look like a plastic bag, maybe some plastic wrapping? Things are getting green. We need to wash plastic flower pots to reuse them, but I caught my partner burning perfectly good ones! Grr….
Growth and growing are part of life and economics, but maybe we don’t need growth as much? The world does not have infinite resources and the population keeps rising. Perhaps we need to seek a balance and an ability for renewal instead of just consuming everything in sight.
We need to use less plastic and less energy. To save resources for the people that come after us. Maybe buy one less peice of clothing or fill up a water bottle again instead of buying a new bottle.
I sometimes think that people are like a virus, growing exponentially. Covering the world with our rubbish and disease.
We need to be able to eat, drink and find shelter. Why don’t we try and care for everyone? I can probably remember back to when there were only 5 billion on the planet, now its over 7 billion and rising. And yet we are still growing? Is it any wonder that there are wars? I think we should share technologies so everyone can have better lives and education… .
Driving home this afternoon. I was a passenger for a change do I had the chance to take a closer look at the verges.. And I was horrified at what I saw. Every foot of every yard of every mile had plastic litter strewn along it. Plastic bottles, tins, paper, wrapping, rubbish, mess. Oh what are we doing to the world?? Then I noticed I could see further than I could in the past. Then I realised tens, perhaps hundreds of trees have been chopped down. There are piles of wood chips where they have been felled and some trunks are still lying there.
I couldn’t take photos but I wish people could have seen it. How much has it cost to do? What habitat has been lost? Why is it more important to fell trees than pick up the mess of litter?
There are signs saying the road will be closed for several days for road work’s Perhaps the trees had to go because of that? In which case I hope they replace the trees with saplings. I will wait and see.
