I miss youdraw

Youdraw.com was a simple black and white site with small and large black pens and erasers. The space to draw in was tiny but people drew wonderful images. For a while I drew and moderated at the site. It was trying to collect 500,000 drawings to represent population growth. I had to delete rude and racist pictures, and spent hours on some days deleting the same scrawl over and over again till the person posting eventually gave up. The site then had protection put in place to block the bad posters, so things improved. Then I found I couldn’t make enough time to volunteer anymore so I had to stop. This drawing was one of mine X

Cyanotype

@creaderart showed me how to do a cyanotype today. It is made using light sensitive paper that is exposed to light then washed in water to wash away the coating. The bird stencil was hers. If you can see a vague cat shape that’s my drawing which I added a few minutes later. Looking slightly like a reflection in a window. It’s oddly like an xray?

One of the problems with the little canvases, the weave is too bumpy so it’s hard to get a smooth surface, I could put a thick layer of paint on first but it might not stick properly? Anyway it’s fun exploring different images.

Weird little green face, red hair or scarf. I’m just playing with complementary colours on a little canvas. I don’t know if I will elaborate on it. Maybe I should add extra details? What do you think?

Imagined aurora

Still obsessed by not seeing the main auroras so I tried to imagine them and their spectacular colours. When you look at the incredible photos people have taken my rendition isn’t very exciting but I would have liked to see more than I did. Auroras are charged particles that follow the Earth’s magnetic field down to the poles. Without that magnetic shield we would be exposed to the radiation of space that would slowly deplete our atmosphere. Our magnetism is caused by Earth’s rotating molten core. Life on Earth is protected by it. Mars, a smaller planet has no magnetism and has lost its atmosphere because of this .

Playing with illustration ideas. If you mirror image half a picture you can create completely different faces. Asymmetry and Symmetry. Artrage app.

When you look at a real face it can be lopsided. Often one eye will be higher up than the other. The underlying skull can be lopsided too. This can be because one side of a brain may be more dominant than the other. I’m not sure of the actual physiological causes of this. I could find out, but just enjoyed experimenting with the original drawing. X

#bandofsketchers prompt was fly. I had to ask for a pallette on Saturday at the Orme Art Group because I’d forgotten mine. I splodge some paint on it, but had some left at the end of the day. I doodled wings and legs on it because the splodges looked like insects.. So I’m calling this “flies”!

What’s your favorite word?

Tranklements is an old fashioned word meaning bits and bobs, a collection of odds and ends, shiny things like a magpie would collect.

I think it is an old historical word from the Midlands of England. Certainly I’ve only really heard it used in The West Midlands around the Birmingham area. I think its a dialect word.

In context you could say I’m just getting my tranklements together if you wanted to gather your lace making kit or a bag full of knitting stuff. Or bits of costume jewellery, a bag full of paints or makeup.

I like it because it sort of explains what it means just in the sound. It should be used more often!

A digital drawing I did 7 years ago from my Facebook memories. It was one of four, earth, wind, water and fire. Each was a face portraying the four ancient elements. I don’t know if I posted all of them on Facebook. Done in Artrage oils.
