Not enough heart points

Walking in the almost 30°C heat, in full sunshine is uncomfortable and tiring. I’m not used to those temperatures here in the UK. We are basically lucky to get a few days of tepid sunshine in the summer and it generally heats up more in August.

So anyway, I have a small challenge with myself to do 5000 steps a day or hopefully more, and to get up to 20 heart points by walking faster than usual. But by the time we had walked round the lake I’d done around 4000 steps and 8 heart points, but I guess the heat slowed me down.

Tell me not to obsess about exercise, but I can’t help it, I wasn’t doing any really two years ago….

🌰 Chesnuts

Memory from seven years ago on Facebook. Hubby decided to bake some Chestnuts- but they were not cooked so he put them back in the oven- 10 minutes later- BANG! One had exploded, he was shouting ow- so I came down to find him taking the roasting dish out of the oven- and using my jumper as an oven glove, he proceeded to try and break them open first with the garlic press, then with the nutcrackers- the chestnut did not pop- it exploded all over the work surface, I grabbed some kitchen towel and we used that to wrap the superheated chestnuts to break them open….

Garden today

Just when I think the plants can’t get bigger we get torrential rain and they grow! And it’s hot, they are happy.

I think our back yard is full. The hanging baskets are pulling the old fence down. But I turn round and my hubby has snuck an Ash tree in! I love it. I hope some of it survives into the autumn. I will continue to post pictures as it grows.

We even had three ripe blueberries today.

Too hot to put the fan on!

DSC_2973

It was so hot today after we had been out to meet some friends (who didn’t turn up) that when we got in and sat down I was too hot and tired to switch the fan on. Its on now and when I cool down a bit more I will get the bottle of frozen water I have in the freezer and put it in front of the fan.

It’s about 30°C and I’m hot, even my toes are sweating! Very humid, more thunderstorms due this evening….

For now I’m trying to chill, relax, and rehydrate. My skin is a bit burnt, August!

Washing day

Slumped by the wall.

Used to support beans growing tall.

A line of washing shades the view

Helping ease the sun’s bright hue.

Plants bathed in heat

Wither and dry

Turning brown

Hope they don’t die.

Above all water of life,

Carried in the clouds

Stopping great strife.

Overall its a British summer.

Bright in parts, in others dimmer.

Some places have vines,

Others marrows,

As the heat of the day

Makes eyes narrow.

So interesting view

Shirts, trousers a few.

Dry in one day.

That’s all I can say.

Cold and grey

DSC_2767

Cold and grey, day

Not got much to say..

Yet,

Grey as it can get?

You bet.

Till tonight’s sunset?

Maybe

We will see

Unless the sun does shine

Fine.

Then happiness will be mine.

So clouds roll away please,

Give us warmth and ease

Some pleasure we can seize

Till we can visit seas

And oceans.

Give us notions

Of calm and peace

Please.

Eggs… Pancakes?

_20200702_151307

My hubby keeps buying eggs but we are not using them up. They are getting towards the end of their life so I will be making an omelette for tea or even pancakes with blueberries and lemon juice.

If I’m making pancakes, I will make a batter from eggs, milk, and flour. I tend to use self raising flour because the pancakes puff up. I’m not one of these thin, crepes, type of pancake people. My mom used to make pancakes in February for Shrove Tuesday. She would add snow water to the batter (yes it used to snow in February!)

So if you want to make them I will try and write a recipe.

First get 2 mugs full of flour. Plain or self raising, this is for a few people so reduce amounts in proportion for one. Put in a mixing bowl.

Then add two or three eggs depending on the size of your mug. (Make a little well in the flour and break the eggs into it.)

Mix together and slowly add around a mug of milk. Add it slowly and stir it in. Keep an eye on the consistency, you want it pourable, like double cream, (heavy cream in America I think?)

Once it’s mixed just put it aside to rest in the fridge  (I don’t know why?)

Then get a frying pan, coat the bottom with a small amount of oil, or a spray frying oil or butter. Heat the pan up quite hot and carefully pour the batter in. Tip the pan to spread the batter out till it covers the base of the pan. If there is still wet batter on the top you can pull the pancake away from the edges of the pan with a spatula and let the batter spill into the gap. Turn it over with a spatula when it’s gone golden brown and cook for a few more seconds on the other side. ( You don’t have to toss it).

Sprinkle with sweetener or sugar and lemon juice when it’s on your plate. Add fruit to taste. When you’ve done one heat the pan again. You might not need to add oil as there should still be some left behind.

Continue till you have used all the mix. You can vary the thickness depending on how hungry you are!
