I don’t know much about bricks, except that they are fired clay. But I do like to see them when they are used decoratively. The way they are laid is called the ‘bond’ where it depends whether they are laid horizontally across the surface of the wall, or with the short end showing on the face of the wall and the length turned 90° so that the brick is across into the layer behind or allows the wall to turn the corner at the edge of the building.
As you can see from this photo, different coloured bricks are often used to make patterns and shapes in the brickwork or are used to frame tiled areas of text stating when the building was built.
I also know that brick sizes changed over time. That they were smaller in the past and hand made. Then molds were made and the brick sizes became standardised. I don’t know all the history of that sorry.

I can see all sorts of things in this, birds, and noses and smiles. Star jumps, an out of focus leaf… Twins with hair in ribbons, giggling at me. Sunglasses. The human mind is strange. Picks up patterns and interprets them into odd things. Life huh?

My hubby, forty years together and we are both getting old. Various marker pens on cartridge paper. He didn’t keep still or I would have done a better job on it. I’ve bought a few more permanent marker pens. Some are OK, but some seriously smell of something like acetone? I used a silver pen to try and add grey to his hair and reflections/highlights on his face.

Quick sketch, layers for #bandofsketchers. Just a pile of washing on the settee with the cat in attendance. Not very exciting I’m afraid. I woukd have liked to have drawn the layers of a cake, or layers of rock in a cliff, or even layers of clothes that someone is wearing, or layers of cloud, but I didn’t have much choice as I haven’t been out today. It’s a bit garish, but I love pattern and colour, so it will do.

Leaves on fire
Bright like stained glass.
Arched and curved.
Twisted and crisp
Like brittle sugar glass
Crispy or soggy
Under children’s feet,
Kicking the fallen leaves.
Leaves because they’ve left?

I played with this photo as the Huchera leaves look like copper sheets. The little sprigs of green in the centre look like tiny green people. I would really like a macro lens so I could take some very close shots of animals including insects, and also plants, together with things like lichen. Whatever I do, I find I want to do more. I deliberately take off centre pictures to make interesting compositions. I like trying to make patterns out of trees and clouds too…..

Fish drawing in permanent inks. Patterns in the water, scale patterns on the fish. I left the edges blank but I think it might look better if I add more or crop the image closer in. I do know I have a style of drawing. When you move your hands it follows a certain pattern, I sometimes try and fight the way I do things, but if I imagine something it usually comes out similar each time. Faces generally look left, three quarter faces look towards the right. Horses heads look left. I think it’s because I’m right handed? Maybe it is because I draw left to right, the same as writing?
Playing with photo editing in my layout app. When you have a subject like a cat you can duplicate and mirror the image and make something interesting happen. Choose to mirror half the face and you end up with a strong stare. I could have made her nose look more natural, but I prefer the odd symmetry this photo gives me.

My friends at #uskstoke know my love of pattern so today’s prompt was for me! It took me a while because its been busy. I drew my cat in front of the sofa which has a bright throw over it. I didn’t get the pattern perfect and I had to rely on a quick photo to catch the cats face. Anyway I enjoyed doing this.
