Old watercolour
I miss rainclouds, full of dark grey promise. We’ve had a few weeks of dry weather and apart from a few spots of rain this morning we’ve had nothing. With that and the cold, frosty mornings, it’s taking a while for the plants to grow. We have a few seedlings, but when I went to a garden nursery they had hardly any perennial plants ready for growing on. I for one am hoping for rain soon.
Portraits with splodges
Ten minute portrait studies with black paint splodges from bubble wrap. I used watercolour and black ink pens for the portraits. We did some minoprint a few weeks back but I found gluing down bits of paper then drawing over the top difficult so tried this instead. It also makes you consider where to paint the face!
We were using found items to add interest. My favourite is the pot of brushes obscuring the face of one of the sitters.
Plum blossom
View from the kitchen window. This is the little plum tree ar the bottom of the garden. There is a cherry tree trunk in front of it and branches from that obscure the view. I decided to leave that out. I painted with watercolours. Palest first, then the pale greens and blues. It’s hard to fit the dark colours in without leaving white edges but I have never used masking fluid to hide the paler areas and I don’t want to start now.

Stone in a corner
In the corner by the porch of a church. I wondered why? The colours caught my eye as we walked past yesterday.
Perhaps it was a child leaving it to remember a lost pet? Or just a painted stone left to brighten a dark corner.
It made me think of ancient and modern. How long will the stone remain unblemished, unfaded. Is it varnished? The paint will flake as the cold invades it. Moisture then ice will affect it. But at least it will remain for a while….
Today’s portrait session 9.4.21
Today we were playing with lighting effects, either with the light from a lamp, a phone or the screen light. I decided to try and use watercolour (mainly blue and brown) and a couple of extra colours depending on the backgrounds. The paint set doesn’t have a black, which makes it interesting trying to get dark enough colours…
Celtic cross
Tried to do a celtic cross (wonky). Sponged black paint. Black ink, then watercolour and finally a bit more black ink on top…
#bandofsketchers prompt today is Easter. I did try and copy this from a photo, but my left hand and arm wobble and shake so much its affecting my right arm. Very fed up. Would love to do something more accurate. I think I’d better try and get in the doctors.
Between?
Tonights #bandofsketchers prompt was between. OK, my choice was between Cadburys Creme Egg cake and a nice hot cross bun…. Er, yes….. Both? I used a little Watercolour box I found on top of the microwave. It’s several years old and only has ten half pans of paint with a tiny brush. But it’s good quality paint.
Unicorn/pegasus
Oil on board 1985, so a long time ago. Don’t remember why I did it but I do like stained glass windows and I designed the one above our front door (a cat). It also seems to be breathing smoke, so there might be a bit of dragon in it! I think I was going a bit Clarice Cliff too!
Observational painting
A strange thing to paint, it’s a bag of cat litter. Just quickly painted, I’ve been busy for the last couple of days and just remembered to post this. I tried to keep the watercolours clean and not to make them too muddy….
Mallaband-Brown
