Writing in the past….

sketch-1573420572103

I’m watching a programme about the author George Eliot and I suddenly realised how different the world must have been then.

She took a man’s name so she could get her books published. She went from a deeply religious belief to someone who became strongly atheistic.

She lost her mother at age 16. She was self taught, and learnt a lot from being allowed free access to a local land owners library.

But apart from her history how was she influenced by the world? Modern history had  not happened yet. No Einstein, no Marie Curie, no first world war, no one knew about the Universe, the world was not fully explored. No TV, radio, computers, no electricity supplies. How did people communicate except by letters and books. No telegraph. Travel was by carriage, or horse. The trains were only just being thought of. How would she have described the modern world and how it affects the life you lead. She was living through a changing era. The chartist riots were happening.

Women were rarely published. The books by Jane Austin and the Bronte sisters were only ones of a few women authors. If she had lived now, she could have written under her own name, Mary Anne Evans, not a masculine pseudonym. She took the pen name George Eliot when she started to write fiction, not the romantic novels that other female writers were creating at the time. She wrote books like the Mill on the Floss and Adam Bede and Middlemarch.

Tiger Balm

Can you get me the Tiger Balm for my injured back please? I can’t use the anti inflammatory gel for another five hours. (no tigers involved just menthol) I asked my hubby to fetch it. Its in the bathroom on top of the cupboard.

Five minutes later he came back with some E45 cream in approximately the same sized tub. And a scented candle in a small jar – jasmine scented I think.

Come with me it’s on top of the cupboard. We went through into the bathroom. It wasn’t there anymore. It was there last night. Now, there are model trains and carriages, but no Thai tiger balm. What have you done with it I asked? I don’t know, I didn’t move it. Maybe the cats knocked it off. It might be in the box I tripped over? Getting frustrated now. It’s in the shed, I’ll look, he said.

Ten minutes later. No it’s not there. There is no way I can go out and check with him….

Must be the poltergeist, I said…..

Fall

I’ve just had a bad fall, tripped over a box of hubbys train bits in the bathroom. Hurt a finger, my elbow my knee and twisted my back. He shouted at me and called me stupid. He’s gone to buy a hot water bottle for my back (I’ve got a bag of frozen sweet corn on it at the moment). One minute I was going to get a wash, the next I flew through the air and landed heavily on the bathroom floor.

It’s an hour later. I’ve got gel painkiller on my back and the hot water bottle. I’m OK leaning backwards but then hard to lean forward again….

I’m fed up.

Spiders webs….

Now the winter is starting there are less of these about. Spiders are probably finding quiet corners to hibernate. So what to do….? Spiders catch all sorts of creepy crawlies, keeping pests down without using pesticides and insecticides. Hopefully your garden finds a balance.

Recently we found frogs in the garden. They eat slugs and insects.

The only other incomers are a couple of squirrels but they do like digging up spring bulbs and planting walnuts and pinching bird food. But they are lovely so I wouldn’t do anything about them!

Exhibition ends tomorrow

It’s amazing how fast a month goes. The last day of the Orme Group’s show at the Brampton museum and art gallery in Newcastle-under-Lyme is tomorrow. Sunday 10th of November 2019. The paintings are in the corridor as you turn left at reception. So if you haven’t been and you would like to see what we get up to on a cold and wet Sunday, nows your chance.

There is a good selection of artists and ainting there. Maybe you will also find an early Christmas present. Maybe even have a walk round the grounds and have a look at the autumn leaves if there are any left on the trees.

Stall set up

I couldn’t fit all my pictures onto the stall today, but I got most of them on, plus some prints.

I got up at 7.40 but dispite trying to be there at 8.30 it was after 9 before I got there….ice to scrape off the car and then slow traffic. I’m lucky it didn’t snow, it was forecast!

The village hall is an old school and we were in the main room. Lots of crafts and charity stalls. I won a few things in the raffle and tombola. We finished about two and then it was time to pack up and try and fit all my paintings in my boxes, that’s an art in itself.

Lost necklace?

Someone wants to buy one of the glass necklaces I made. She wants a definite one. But in the time period since she saw it and asked me to keep it she can’t remember which one it is. I did wrap it up but I don’t know if I put it on display again at my last craft fair, in which case I might be wrong. I want to be a helpful seller. I care about people getting what they asked for. I hope I’ve found it!

The English countryside in Autumn

_20191108_130143DSC_2334DSC_2337

We just came back from lunch at a pub called the Red Lion in Werrington, Staffordshire. Lovely food, and a view from the restaurant over the Staffordshire countryside. The leaves are still falling. There are some beautiful colours. It was clear and the sky was a cold blue. It was good to be snug and warm inside. Now I’ve got to get ready for a craft fair tomorrow. I need to finish a couple of paintings a d add some ribbon… Back to work…
