Communication or not?

I have a good friend who has become slightly obsessed with a subject. She is determined to get her point of view across but I fundamentally disagree with her. I said as much on a post today but she wasn’t impressed. I can’t get her to understand you shouldn’t tar everyone with the same brush. Not everyone is the same, not everyone of a certain type of person will act in a specific way.

She started to talk about someone and I pointed out that my examples were not that person and I wasn’t going to describe or identify them. I don’t think that’s the right thing to do in public.

So why talk about communication? Well it’s that thing about nuance. Unless you write exactly the right words it’s hard to get your point across. Typing and texting don’t show emotions so maybe physically talking to that person might get your message across better than in writing. At the moment I’m nervous to respond to her, I  don’t want to lose her friendship.

Muttered words

Does anyone else mutter extra words after they have finished a phone call? I just caught myself doing it, adding a little comment when my caller had ended the call. It wasn’t rude, just something along the lines of ” oh leave me alone”, but it could have been multiple phases. I think it must be something to do with being tired. It was just that I realised I might not have hung up properly. But no it was OK. I wonder how often this habit occurs? I shall have to be careful!

How to alleviate symptoms

What details of your life could you pay more attention to?

When you have lots of illnesses it’s hard to keep track of what’s going on. Different things go wrong and you take medication, but it’s hard to know how to manage things. Which symptom is the most concerning, how do things interact, should you exercise more or less? What diet would improve your health?

But also don’t rely on Dr Google or online miracle workers. Many people have been affected by malpractice and con artists. Use your intelligence and listen to what professionals say, but with a pinch of scepticism. If you are unsure don’t be afraid to ask questions. Not the “I want a second opinion” type maybe? But try and get a sensible answer. Doctors are not infallible, they can make mistakes, but I do try and communicate with them. Fingers crossed by doing this I can pay more attention in how I look after myself.

Posting stuff

How do you use social media?

I post inanities, some profanities.

I post comments and responses, photos and art, I share posts and repost. Much of it isn’t important. I’ll ask people to answer questions, like can you name an A to Z of fruit? Or do you remember TV programmes in the 60’s or 70’s? And of course I post pictures of my cats.

I post here and at other sites such as Facebook. I sometimes write poems or short stories. I try and come up with interesting digital sketches and art. Exploring fine art ideas and creating new paintings. I sometimes even create pottery or sculpture.

I occasionally play games online but I’m not keen on video games or whatever it’s called now. I sometimes look up facts but I tend to rely on my own knowledge and understanding. I’m no influencer, that’s not what I’m interested in. But it makes for a more varied life and keeps me occupied (too much)! Plus you get to meet interesting and unusual people xxxx

Subtitled

A lot of the time now I switch on the subtitles on the TV. Not for me but for my hubby, even with hearing aids he struggles. But when you read them, the ‘live’ ones, there are some strange mistakes, mainly homophones where sees is misinterpreted as cease or seize for instance. Some are real howlers. ‘He was pudding the shutters down’ , or spelling mistakes ‘the fig was thick that night, it was hard to sea’. I’m sure I couldn’t do any better. But some of them are hilarious! And distracting. Tonight I was watching a dancing show and instead if dancing a Rumba it said Room bar!

Talking, but not listening

So many of us throw our voices out into the ‘blogosphere’, saying things we hope others will hear. But dies anyone really listen? Like a TV or radio signal escaping into space, are out missives actually picked up by anyone? The sounds might bounce off local planets and jiggle their atmospheres a bit, but after that… Our voices are lost in the dark, out beyond Pluto and the Oort cloud. Or trapped in a thin layer of atmosphere closer to us, bouncing off a personal ‘heavyside’ layer, trapped and echoing until the waves of speech are frittered and frayed away.

WordPress, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, what are they for? Free speech or an echo chamber to stop us thinking? You decide. I am undecided.

Cat escape

Me to hubby ‘shut the kitchen door please’
Him, ‘why?’
Me, ‘the cat will get out.’

He doesn’t shut it
Cat gets out
Hubby has to search for cat in neighbouring gardens.
Hubby gets scratched by brambles and cat.

Me ‘grrrrr!’

Why don’t people listen. It’s obvious what’s going to happen. It’s worrying because the cat is due at the vets this afternoon, will it get out again!?

Happy outdoor cat, indoors

Since the middle of winter our outdoor cat has come in every day, and most nights he sleeps at least a couple of hours on the bed. He’s a big cat, and waking up with him lying on your chest is a bit startling. Then he reaches out one or both front paws in a gesture of trust. He’s not very keen on being touched. His nose has been scratched by other cats several times (no real animosity between him and my other two cats though). But he’s well fed now and you can see he’s greatful… And he’s like skippy the Bush kangaroo (a reference to a 1960’s kids TV programme…) he points at things. He looks at his bowl when he wants food, the door if he wants to be let out, but more than that, his body language communicates, and if I tap somewhere on the bed with my hand he will go there… And being touched by his paw on my hand is so sweet.
