Celtic art illustrations.

Illustrations I did almost forty years ago of pre Christian Celtic art for my thesis.

This is in response to a post on the The Silent Eye by Steve Tanham this morning on Celtic Art. It was very interesting and informative. It reminded me how I was influenced by the patterns they created. It also made me think about the Staffordshire hoarde of Saxon treasure that was found in this area about ten years ago. Similar but different.

The skills of the artesans that made these was immense. In an age that had no technology except for the hand eye coordination of the makers it is incredible what they could make.

Prompt for today

Today’s prompt was Rooves (roofs). I looked out of all my windows and this view from the back of our house came closest to the remit. The sun was low and shining in as I drew this so I had to scoot across the bed so that I didn’t get completely dazzled. Most of the view is taken up with shrubs and trees. A few roofs in the distance, in silhouette. I managed to see more as the sun started to set, but it had to be done quickly. For our #bandofsketchers group.

Today’s #bandofsketchers sketch

Today’s prompt for #bandofsketchers was a drawing of a body part, so I chose to draw my hand, drawing the sketch! I’ve seen other drawings where a person has drawn their hand and a sketch pad balanced on their crossed legs. Adding the shadow of my pen and my hand on the sketchbook to try and indicate this is a sketch, also not completing the line at the base of the box. When I do a sketch like this I have to try and think logically about how it works, what it’s meant to indicate and whether I need to include all the details or if I can leave some more sketchy.

Black and white art…

I’ve duplicated the Picasso copies I did and put them through a black and white filter.

That way you can concentrate on the mark making I’ve made. I think there are some aspects of the marks I could have looked at better, but I also think I’ve got a bit of my own style in these. Plus you know me and pattern making. I can’t seem to stop embellishing things, so Picasso ‘speaks’ to me….

Is tthere any artist you would like to reproduce yourself….? It’s an interesting challenge to copy other people’s art, especially something you would never usually do. It helps you look and learn.

tired out

people walking

That’s not what I’ve been doing this last week, in fact almost the exact opposite! I think I have realised what has been wrong with me. A bout of tonsillitis. It’s tired me out, I feel washed out and slightly dizzy. Today I actually left the house and did some shopping. I needed to get some watercolour paper and new drawing pens. I’ve been meaning to do it for a week. I had to get my hubby to come along to help me carry things and ended up spending far too much on some plants for the winter months in the garden. I also haven’t done much of my college work and can see it spiralling away from me. Will I catch up? seriously I need to be better now. I cant afford to get too behind with the course work.

life! sometimes it sucks.

Using photodirector on a cat

Rather a painterly effect. The cats fur has an interesting pattern in it. The newspaper layers are defined. The surface of the box has a slight mottled effect. This was all done by using the style tool and choosing effect number two. The background colours add to the composition. I would have liked to get the cat looking more directly at me, but she wasn’t playing tonight! She does like perching on boxes as you can see. I think it looks quite good.

Trying to get the cat in.

We are trying to encourage the abandoned cat that we look after into the house as the weather gets colder. He isn’t very happy though. He struggles out of my hubbies arms and runs and yowls to be let back out again. We might have to consider opening the cat flap and having him in the bathroom over night if nothing else. We want him in a warmer situation than last winter.

I keep telling hubby that you have to encourage him in gently (the cat, not hubby) and let him settle down, until he gets confident. The two house cats don’t seem to mind him and disregard him, so that’s positive.

Blog now, pay later…

Photo of milk chocolates that I was given today. Manipulated in Instagram and Photodirector. I shouldn’t eat them, I’ve had a couple ‘to sooth my throat’, hubby’s had some too…

Then, we’ll you know what I’m like…

Elaborated the photo by duplicating it in Layout. I like the way the strawberry chocolates somehow turned into mouth 👄 shapes. I rotated the images a few times before I came up with this set. I chose the title, by the way, because I’m not meant to have sugar!

🐬 Dolphin doodle

I was looking at Maori designs for whales and Orcas and saw one for a dolphin. I haven’t copied it but this is similar, with my own spin. I was still thinking of Auntysocials challenge to do something with her black and white piano keys. It won’t be possible to do womething like this without cutting and shaping piano keys. But it’s just an idea. I’m not quite sure why I added the waves. I can imagine the dolphin jumping.

Shouldn’t have added the curly lines to the title. It seems to read dolphik! Or dolphink, oh dear!
