Happy Easter

Eggcellent Easter wishes!

My sister bought me a mini egg Easter egg. It’s been years since I’ve had one. I opened the foil wrapping and made a small hole in the chocolate eggs side. I tipped a few of these pretty patterned chocs out, took a picture and slowly ate them (very sweet!) then rewrapped the treat in its covering, there was still a gap so I’ve turned it so the front looks untouched. I have fastened the box up. Put it back on top of the fridge. Hope hubby doesn’t notice or he might snaffle the rest if it!

Easter bunny

A foil wrapped chocolate Easter bunny that we had for our yoga class chocolate meditation. You unwrap the chocolate, smell it, look at it and notice it’s shape and texture, then put the chocolate in your mouth without chewing it. Finally you chew it and notice how the texture changes. The process of slowly looking at, and tasting it gives you time to understand how lovely the chocolate was, and without just eating in a greedy or hungry way. You are exploring your senses. We also did yoga postures and breathing. It was a simple relaxing evening class.

Celebratory Mouse Mousse

My friend bought me this mousse Mouse today from a Greek cafe as a gift. I was going to keep it till tomorrow but then I got the news that I have got my painting in the local art exhibition and I just had to celebrate.

He had (yes he’s gone) a chocolate sponge base, chocolate mousse topping and mouse shape, a shiny chocolate ganasche covering and chocolate buttons for ears and a tail. Then two white icing dots for eyes. It was very sweet to look at and eat.

We will go back so I can try some of their savory food. I fancy a Greek salad and stuffed vine leaves.

How do I make my own blancmange?

This is custard powder made up with milk and sweetner with added chocolate. I love making sugar free trifles. I usually use sugar free jelly and add a bit if fruit (used raspberries today) because trifle sponges are covered in sugar. Then I add blancmange when the jelly is set. I have to let it cool because it can re-melt the jelly. But now I can only get blancmange if my sister posts me some (they still sell strawberry flavour where she lives). The trouble is that most people use custard but I don’t like it’s flavour in trifle. This time I did make custard but added four square pieces of no added sugar chocolate and melted it into the milk. I will use this mix and then add whipped cream on top of the trifle to finish it off. But I just wonder if I can make my own with cornflower and flavourings? That would be a lot easier…

Sunday lunch

Strange lunch, orange flavoured Hot Cross buns with chocolate chips. We were having a big meal for our dinner and we had a big breakfast so I just wanted a simple, small meal to eat. Today’s #bandofsketchers prompt was Sunday Lunch so I did a quick sketch of these. They were tasty, but I think I prefer the original flavour. Less sweet and with Cinnamon. Also its very early in the year for Hot Cross buns. X

Port trifle

Trifle time, I always make trifle at this time of year. I used raspberry jelly, trifle sponges and fresh black cherries. I added a bit of port to the jelly liquid (reduced the amount of boiling water by the same amount). Then a layer of strawberry blancmange and whipped cream on top. Blancmange is like flavoured custard. I used to be able to get chocolate, raspberry, vanilla and strawberry blancmange powder made by a company called pierce and duff, but over the last couple of years I’ve only been able to get the strawberry one in a plastic packet. It seems a shame, but I’m obviously an old fashioned cook. Anyway I have just had a portion of this delicious dessert. X

Banana, custard and chocolate?

It looks weird, but it was tasty. I made up some custard powder, I use sweetner and semi skimmed milk to make it. Once it’s boiled up and thickened I just pour it over the chopped banana. But as an extra treat I added a large square of dark, low sugar (less than 5%) on top of the banana before I poured the custard. The heat made it melt. I could have been artistic with the swirls, but messy tastes nice too!

Tree or decorations

Since we haven’t got a tree this Christmas I haven’t put any baubles or decorations up. But that didn’t stop me getting an old box of them out to draw. The #bandofsketchers prompt for Christmas Eve…. Now I’m having a caramel chocolate and a glass of port while watching ‘the day after tomorrow’ I guess they put it on because its full of snow…..

Belgian chocolates

Oh no! Hubby bought chocolates for Christmas, a big box…. But then we decided to open them. I’ve had five and feel really guilty and a bit ill. Hubby’s eaten about ten! We should not do this. It’s not healthy. But I couldn’t resist the sweet and smooth flavours of them. I’m going to put them in the back of a cupboard so they can be enjoyed next week with our coffee.

When I was a child there used to be adverts of a man scaling a wall in the dark, climbing through a window and leaving a box of chocolates with a card… Not sure but I think it had the man’s silhouette on it? The tag line was ‘and all because the lady loves milk tray’. Chocolates were romantic in those days, not the cause of diabetes!

I have a sarcasm gene

My hubby went shopping today.

I asked him to get savoury food.

So he got:

4 tins of tomatoes, a litre of skimmed milk, some mushrooms, brown bread.

Then, a large Christmas cake, Christmas pudding, mint chocolate matchsticks, grapes, iced buns, a chocolate toffee apple, clementines, bananas, two pomegranates, dried cranberries, two jars of honey, a pot of jam. He also got himself four bottles of beer and four cans of sweat cider.

I’m diabetic, so I can’t eat any of these and can’t really drink much alcohol. My sarcasm gene kicked in so I told him he was being ‘sweet’, I said he should get me some honey roasted ham or some duck in orange sauce. After I washed the shopping and put it away I asked him how much he had spent. I guess 90% of what he bought is for him.

Slightly annoyed!
