Catnip

I saw some catnip for sale today, I usually get the cats catnip toys, but this was a bag of shredded plant material.

Basically the cats loved it. They all rolled about and snuffed it. One of them started chewing my slipper…while I was wearing them. He even chewed at my trouser leg. He also started playing and chewing my straps on my sandals. He ended up rolling round on his back where he’d scattered the catnip on the carpet, he had got underneath the towel I’d put it on and spilt it on the floor.

Now? He’s sleeping like a baby like butter wouldn’t melt in his mouth!

Crumpets for tea

Hot buttered crumpets for tea! The little holes in the top of them allow the butter or margarine to trickle down into tiny tubes inside the crumpet. You heat them under a grill or in a toaster on both sides to heat them up. The base of them is solid so when you add your topping it doesn’t leak out. I only used to have butter, but recently I’ve added grated cheese and microwaved them for a few seconds so it drizzled inside them, also try honey or jam (America calls it jelly). Note these are NOT muffins, that’s a whole different bready food.

Belgian chocolates

Oh no! Hubby bought chocolates for Christmas, a big box…. But then we decided to open them. I’ve had five and feel really guilty and a bit ill. Hubby’s eaten about ten! We should not do this. It’s not healthy. But I couldn’t resist the sweet and smooth flavours of them. I’m going to put them in the back of a cupboard so they can be enjoyed next week with our coffee.

When I was a child there used to be adverts of a man scaling a wall in the dark, climbing through a window and leaving a box of chocolates with a card… Not sure but I think it had the man’s silhouette on it? The tag line was ‘and all because the lady loves milk tray’. Chocolates were romantic in those days, not the cause of diabetes!

Mini gingerbread man

Yes, it’s a mini gingerbread man. A treat with a cup of tea. Nice and spicy with a good snap. Dunked in to his knees first, then waist, and body, finally his head. Sorry gingerbread man, but you were very tasty. I might find room for another!

I know that far more elaborate ginger biscuits used to be made, for some reason I remember them being mediaeval? Maybe made in the Netherlands? Someone please let me know. I do know they are made in Market Drayton, in Shropshire. I can’t tell you more….

Curry night

Every so often, after choir practice, I order a takeaway curry because I’m too tired to cook our evening meal. It feels like a real treat not to have to cook.

All I need to do is dish it out when it arrives. The local tandoori restaurant does really nice baltis and bhunas. Then pilau rice or garlic nan to accompany it.

I’ve done a drawing to illustrate as I will be otherwise engaged in a short while. There is an interesting movie on the TV and I might have a small glass of beer to go with the food.

Tomorrow I need to plan what paintings I’m going to do next, but tonight I’m going to chill with chilli!
