Dawn colours

DSC_1912_optimized I’m thinking of painting a bright sky, filled with violets and pinks, ochre and brownish reds. Showing the sun rising behind clouds, leaves and telephone wires framing the dawn.

I’m wondering how to mix the colours so they glow? Should I use golds and silvers to enhance it.

I’m thinking of painting the world anew. Rich colours exploding in the morning light.

Last year’s Tulips

I’ve not had much time in the garden recently and missed most of the daffodils and tulips so here are some tulips from last year. Things have also got a bit squashed by some building and gardening work, I want to get back out there and tidy things up.

There are a few patterns created by duplicating the photos using the layout app on my phone. I hope you like these.

Exhibition at centre space.

DSC_1835I had the pleasure of meeting an artist and photographer called Cyril Tilstone at his exhibition at Centre Space tonight. It is based at the Spode heritage visitors centre at spode site, Eleanora Street, Stoke-on-Trent. It started tonight and is on for a month.

His images are photo collages of bottle ovens or historic buildings like cherished chimneys at Longport. With interesting and intruiging compositions including things like chimney pots, doves, paintings by Joshua Reynolds and even marbles. The images are colourful and show the industrial history of Stoke-on-Trent in a new way. There are time travelling Dr Who characters dotted about. This is a gentle and gently humorous look at Stoke-on-Trent past and present.

I would  recommend it to you.

Roses and fruit.

I keep finding drawings that I did at sketchfu all those years ago that are popping up on my memories page. I just want to share them because I’m quite proud of them considering it was just a site with basic tools. I’m posting a different set in a minute. I did do drawings of more people but they haven’t emerged from the depths of FB yet.

Watercolour painting

FB_IMG_1552523087255

Several years ago I offered to do a painting for whoever made the highest bid for a charity auction. I don’t remember what the bid was but I did this portrait of the bidders dogs. It’s in watercolours on watercolour paper and framed. The paper was a3 but the mount is wide and cut in more of a letterbox shape because of the composition.

I loved painting them, they have such cheeky faces. I also loved painting the patterned cloth they were lying on. I think it’s a throw.

You know where to contact me if you would like to commission me.

Lake view

IMG_20190219_130015_802

Good to get a good image of this painting I did a year ago. The owner has kindly sent me a HD image of it.

Acrylic on canvas, it is a lake view where the trees are back lit by a setting sun. Approximately 12 x12 inches square.

I wanted to paint a view that was crisp and fresh. The colours contrast nicely and the reflections in the water Shimmer with ultramarine blue.

I’m happy to paint anything you would like to commission. Just contact me to discuss.

Aurora

sketch-1550405688049

“And what is Life?—An hour-glass on the run,
A mist retreating from the morning sun,
A busy, bustling, still repeated dream;
Its length?—A minute’s pause, a moment’s thought;
And happiness?—A bubble on the stream,
That in the act of seizing shrinks to nought.”

[From ‘What is Life?’ (1820) by John Clare]

I just read this quote and thought about what I would love to see. My friend recently visited Iceland and was lucky to see the aurora borealis. I decided to try and draw it since I haven’t had the opportunity to see one. I was surprised to find out they can be colours other than green which is caused by Nitrogen ions in the atmosphere. The pink is from Oxygen.

The magnetic North Pole of the Earth is drifting towards the actual North Pole at several kilometers a year. There is speculation about what is causing this. But as the Earth’s has a molten iron core it causes a magnetic feild generated by the movement of the Iron. The earth’s magnetic feild may flip (it has before) and so the aurora may drift further south.

The magnetic feild lines emerge from the poles like a bar magnet. This is where the Earth’s magnetosphere is at its weakest and the solar wind, which is made up of charged particles, comes down the magnetic lines and causes the gases in atmosphere to glow.

I wish I had more knowledge about it and I hope one day I will see it.
