Some of our books

Some of our books, we have shelves in three alcoves in the living room but the third was too damp to have one because of damp in the neighbours house. Don’t ask!

Then there are about 100 in our bedroom and more in the front bedroom. When I got to 1000 I stopped counting! I have to admit it’s my hubby who is the biggest reader of the two of us. But I’m definitely a bibliophile. (book lover).

Favourites sci-fi, art, fantasy, biography, science, astronomy, thrillers, autobiography, design, ceramics……

Why do I write?

IMG_20190825_210312_674

I don’t think of myself as a writer. I love words, but mostly I’m more of a reader, and then as a dabbler at writing. I don’t really plot things, they generally fall out of my head and onto the paper or my mobile screen. I guess it’s just the way I am. I love being creative and since I finished work I’ve started to branch out. I feel like a little dabchick or duck. I paddle  away, my feet just gently moving the water of words around, breaking the surface tension but not going deep. And what for? I’ve been told my grammar is not as good as it could be. I don’t do this for likes and views, it’s all quite low key. I don’t expect to ever write a novel. I did once try and write a children’s book, so long ago it’s still stored on a floppy disk!

As long as I don’t bore you too much.

Into the crimson wood.

IMG_20190825_131823_164

On a perfect autumn day the wood looked enticing. The leaves had turned crimson from the frosts and a soft mist was flowing down the hill from it.

Susan was walking along the path between her bungalow and the village a couple of miles away. She wanted a paper and some milk, but she had time so she decided to take a detour. The sun was bright and low, and as she was walking due East it was shining into her eyes. A quick few steps upwards and she entered the skirts of the forest. As with many managed woods the outside was deciduous but then there were pines and larch and other evergreens inside it, the trunks growing close knit, the shade deepening the further she looked inwards.

Susan had walked half a mile through the crimson leaves, enjoying the autumn colour, when she was stopped by a fence, it was wooden with barbed wire across the top. No entry signs were fastened to it with metal clips. More worryingly there were other signs saying danger of electrocution. Where had it come from? She’d walked this way last week and there had just been the path across the field. She could not go on, but turned right and wove her way a bit further into the wood, hoping there would be an end to it. Perhaps it would turn a corner and allow her to make her way?

As she moved along the fence she heard squawking, like a flock of geese? In a wood? The ground on the other side of the fence looked trampled and worn down. The bird sounds got louder. Suddenly she came out into a clearing. The Geese were there. Giant Geese, huge, eight or nine foot tall! She felt scared and didn’t know what to do. Just walk backwards she thought, be quiet and back away from the Geese. She had managed to duck the problem!

Shattering

Pixels and glass, an old disco ball changed by using Layout app and adjusting the sharpness, colours and contrast.

Splashing subtle colours around the room, coloured washes staining the walls if the sun glints on it. I know disco balls are not the thing to have in a living room, but it cheers me up. As the sun sets behind the house the light gradually creeps in. First it catches the glass crystals I have in the window and they send rainbow shards through the room. Jittering and twisting across the magnolia plaster. Then the sun drops lower and the disco balls individual glass facets glitter and flicker.

It was from this that I made this image.

I tripped over… Poem?

IMG_20180828_155708

I saw this challenge on Facebook.

Type a phrase then chose the middle button of spell checker to continue. I thought it might make a poem? The phrase is… I tripped over….

I tripped over

I don’t know what to do

I don’t know if you have the same thing

But I can send you a link

I can add buttons to the list

You might end up with a cold

I have edited the last one first

Good to be a bit more practical

But all I want to get is the best

I have been working on the first week

And the last one they had with me

Food and water and all those days.

Well I’m not sure what I think of it, I think it’s quite emotionless. It’s only an algorithm though. My words. I did edit it slightly otherwise it would have said ‘sent from my Xperia’…

Northern Soul

sketch-1566687789880

To save my blushes I’ve drawn over a photo my friend took of me today.

After we had sung with the combined choir there was a brief break and then a woman got up and did a quick dance lesson to teach us  Northern soul dance steps. The music is in four four time, so she taught us four steps, stand on your left leg, tap your right foot behind, to the side of and in front of your left foot, then put your right foot down about shoulder width away from your left foot. Then putting your weight in your right leg repeat the moves using your left foot. After we learned to do that and danced for a while to a northern soul tune she added a jump, then jump and cross your legs spin round, clap, and carry on doing the side to side step.

I was jigging along with the rest of the crowd. I loved Northern Soul when I was a teenager.

The only problem? My knees are aching now.

Trains

DSC_2175

We got a nice shed so my hubby could have somewhere to store all his bikes and bike bits. But something has migrated in there. OO guage trains, hornby dublo and triang, have moved in. The bikes, tyres, tubes, wheels have been evicted to various bushes in the garden, sheltering from summer showers.

Trying to explain that if he gets a couple of storage boxes or some shelves. He could put things away and not have to step over train transformers to get in. Also if we get a pasting table he won’t have to kneel on the floor… I don’t think being organised is his strong suit….

Builders?

DSC_2172

As I reported a couple of days ago, my neighbour had had a new gas boiler installed and they drilled through into our living room knocking off some plaster.

The saga continues. This photo is of the boiler exhaust pipe, which the builder/plumber said was going to be fixed in place by his mate today. He’s used CARDBOARD to fill in the gap. The hole is right next door to us and if water gets in I don’t know what damage it will do! I’ve heard of cowboy builders, but not cardboard ones!

My neighbour is elderly and may not get the service he paid for. I don’t want to complain to him. But it the builders don’t come back I might contact trading standards or even pay for the work to be done myself.

Garden today

It’s all berries, flowers, and spider webs.

The temperature is rising again and the fruit is ripening. The spiders in the garden are busy catching pests, and flowers continue to emerge.

Watering plants is important, especially in hanging baskets, I’m afraid mine have started to wilt.

My hubby has counted about fifty small pears on the pear tree, which is growing at an angle because it’s top heavy. We have used a piece of timber to prop it up. We also have quite a few green tomatoes, basically because they are in too much shade so are not ripening quickly.

Life continues, cats mooch round the garden trying to pounce on the odd wood pigeon. I keep our cats in but can’t shoo the neighbouring ones away easily.

Big sing

I went to something called the big sing, organised by a group called appetite this afternoon.

Four choirs including Clay Chorus, Loud Mouth Women, Staffordshire Community choir and Village voices for lung health gathered together alongside members of the public to learn two songs together and also sing from their own repertoire. There were about 110 people singing in the Regent theatre who had allowed us to use the venue for the event.

After two hours learning the songs together we sang our own songs. Then we came together to sing two final songs. There were about 70 people massed together to sing them. We made a big noise in Piccadilly, Hanley. The atmosphere was great. I was so happy to be part of it. I even managed a quick sketch  of the Staffordshire community choir while we waited to go on.
