You sang, you flew
Perched and pecked
Hopped in the grass
Stood on the branch
You slept soundly
Woke at dawn
Gave voice to beauty
Slept again.
What befell you?
I do not know
But fall you did
Farewell to you.

Oh my busy hands and brain!
I really must be insane.
Spending hours transforming
Reeds and rough planting
Into old grey Nog
Bean pole legs and yellow beak
Through the vegetation peeks!

Wind blows
and cat knows
Which way the wind is blowing.
Bird flies
And follows
The wind southwards
To find a home to brood
It’s young chicks.
Cat looks North
Bird comes South
May they miss each other
In the windy sky.

I think this was a coot chick (could be moorhen chick) we saw yesterday. I goy a reasonable photo of it although it’s beak seems to disappear into the stony soil on the side of the lake. It’s mum was just out of shot swimming on the lake. I guess they have to be as independent as possible as quickly as they can so that they can go out into the world. But this is a little fuzz ball and it’s still without feathers. I hope it survives to full fledge.

Hot and humid
I have to sit in the shade
UV’s too high
Pollen count too
Had cherries and cream
For high tea today
Now I need a cuppa tea
To make me feel cool.
Blackbird is singing
In the garden today
Water to drink
In an old shallow tray.

Pigeon, today’s #bandofsketchers prompt was bird. I decided not to Google a bird, but to try and draw from memory. I think it’s a reasonable representation, I dare not look at a photo of one to see how wrong I’ve got it!
Biro drawing in my sketchbook.

Blue feet on this Coot?
It looks quite cute!
As it waddles along
It might sing a song
That would really make me hoot!

An Owl painting I did a couple of years ago. They are intriguing birds. Their ears are set at different heights underneath all their feathers so that they can differentiate which side their prey is on. Their wings are silent as they fight through the air, making it hard for animals to know they are being hunted. Sharp talons for gripping and hooked beaks for tearing into their prey make them a top predator. Beautiful but deadly.

When you have problems with shaking it’s difficult to paint details. This canvas is about 2 inches by 3 inches and the Jay in the central window pane is less than an inch high. I tried hard to paint the details. I think I did OK but it’s not perfect. But hopefully it will be a nice little gift…

Small canvas, about two inches by three. It’s meant to be a window with a rusty frame. Frosty window panes. I’m going to add branches and maybe a bird like a Jay. The texture has been done with a pallette knife. I don’t usually use these but I was given a set at Christmas. I’m waiting for it to dry so I can add more to it.
