Fully open amaryllis flowers. They cheer the kitchen up. I don’t think they will last much longer but they are beautiful at the moment. There is a pink blush on the edges of the petals and a green tint in the centre of the flower and running up the middle of the petals.
Pale ink and white
Flowers exploded like a rocket
Amaryllis is a firework
Of a plant…
Water it well
And stand back!
From a tiny tip
Of a leaf
Two weeks ago,
This grew and bloomed
Water is the key
Pour it on
And the plant expands.
But once grown
Too much water
Can rot the roots…
On the windowsill a pale white/pink Amaryllis about to burst into flower and a minature rose, salmon pink and lovely. A present from my hubby for Christmas. They are looking lovely this JANUARY 2022!
Now 2021 is gone, its done. It will never come again. I hope 2022 is better, we see sense about the climate, we do everything we can to stop the spread of Covid. That we start caring for each other and make more of an effort to help those with the least resources.
A beautiful indoor winter plant, the red bracts are modified leaves not petals. Its often used as a centerpiece for Christmas decorations. This is a painting I did of one. I remember my mum had one growing in the spare room. I don’t think it likes too much heat? The indoor gardeners here will have a better iidea than I do. It seems to have been taken over in popularity by Amaryllis buls which also flower around this time of year.
Quick sketch of Amaryllis in flower. In our kitchen today. #bandofsketchers prompt was in/inside. I have another plant in flower and others putting up flower spikes. Watercolour on cartridge paper.
It’s great how these bulbs become dormant after flowering, eventually the old leaves die down… Then they spring back into life when you water them about this time of year. Little and often is my way of doing it. Water but don’t drench. The bulbs swell, then suddenly a couple of leaves sprout, growing rapidly with a flower spike. I have kept one bulb for ten years. Each time it grows bigger. But don’t be eager to put it in a larger pot. It takes a few years, it likes being crammed in a pot. I only move them into the next size up pot. My oldest has grown a secondary bulb that also flowers….
I ddrew the green spike of our amaryllis plant and romised to post a photo. This was the first of four flowers on the spike. They came and went over a week. But as they faded another flower spike has grown up! Soon two or more flowers should be bursting out. I will try and take a better photo this time.
I have three old plants but they haven’t grown up yet. I think they need more water and our house is probably too dry at the moment.
And I had to show it
In electric light
Will you flower forever
Or fade away
Snow White petals
Green amaryllis bulb about to burst, the last years leaves still surviving in another pot and some darker green leaves in another pot. The living room reflected behind in the background. Today’s #bandofsketchers drawing this afternoon. I kept the colours to a minimum to emphasise the greens.
It’s flowered. My Amaryllis is in flower. Bright red trumpets. Three big flowers.
There are two other plants, they have leaves, but no flowers. I hope they might still send up long stems with buds. I’m watering them, but it might not be till next year, then perhaps they will flower. Amaryllis like to be tightly packed into their pots, and so I don’t re-pot them until they have started to outgrow their pots. The one that is flowering is over ten years old. It was a Christmas present from my mother. It has a second bulb growing next to it, and when that gets large enough I may try and dislodge it and grow it in a new pot.
I do think they have possibly been overfed this year. When I have fed my orchids I have given any spare water with food in it, to the amaryllis plants. Usually I don’t bother to feed them. They do seem to have put on a lot of leaves so perhaps that is why they are not flowering as well as normal.
