Friday 13th

Someone asked me whether I was superstitious of the day. I’m not really but I thought I would write a response :

I’m staying indoors in case a black cat crosses my path, climbs up a ladder, meets a magpie, has a fight, knocks over the ladder, which lands on a crack in the pavement, breaking the wing mirror on my car. The ladder also breaks my window and snaps the stop cock on the way down……

Now where did put my rain coat incase we have a flood….?

Apple and custard treat

I had leftover cooking apples from this years crop that were starting to go soft. I didn’t want to cook a cake so I decided to poach them, with a twist…..

Ingredients:

2 or 3 cooking apples

A half cup of diet ginger ale/ ginger ale or water and a couple of teaspoons of sugar or a small amount of sweetner.

Custard powder

Milk

Sweetner or sugar

Method:

Cook the chopped apples with the diet ginger ale (or ginger ale or water and sugar), choose which you prefer, the ginger ale does give the apples sweetness and a bit more of a bite.

The apples will soften and as they do will give off liquid, stop the cooking when they are still slightly firm.

Put into serving dishes.

Mix up the powdered custard as described on the pack. Substitute the liquid from the apples for some of the milk that is needed for the custard. Top up with milk to the desired amount. (I add less for thicker custard). Add sugar or sweetner to taste.

Once the custard mix has been boiled to the right thickness pour over the apples

Serve

Result, a tasty treat for tea. The ginger ale does add an extra bit of flavour.

You could probably make further substitutes to create a vegan treat.

Dancing leaves

Of all the seasons I remember autumn’s the most. Walking in the ark as a child, kicking my legs through piles of dry leaves, or slashing in puddles of water with soggy leaves sticking to my wellies. Looking at faces in gnarled trees, seeing if I could see Halloween witches. Sitting under the remaining few leaves of a weeping willow. Wondering when it would be clothed again. Time then was slow. Six months took a year….

Moonlight

Soon will come the new Moon,

running over the sky,

hurtling through space,

so slow but so fast,

arc of light,

thirteen moons and

thirteen months in a year.

Cold and numb I stand and view you. Shocked by your light,

reflected glory.

You are time,

you are a clock,

your face turned to us

but constantly changing.

If one could visit you,

like in the past,

would we see times spell,

it’s awesome power.

Our sad world.

Emotions

What emotions or feelings do you think are shown in this portrait? Anger, sadness, upset? Concentration or thought?

Sometimes it’s hard to tell. I know I drew this a couple of years ago and the sitter was, I think, either listening to the radio or watching TV. I think the look is concentration. Some peoples can sag when they are in repose. I know it takes more muscles to frown than to smile, but sometimes a face takes on a characteristic look, a shape it settles into. That’s this look…

Old man’s bike

Old man’s bike

Old man’s bike

Has to have pockets,

Man’s old bike

Could be a plant.

Old man’s bike

Oiled and old rusted spokes

Man’s old bike

Malborough County.

Old man’s bike

Elderly wheels

Man’s old bike

With new tyres added.

Old man’s bike

Cycled up the hill.

Old man’s bike…..

He cycled down

Fell off

Landed flat on his back

Arms and legs flailing!

But old man’s bike

Was undamaged!

‘Together’ today’s prompt

Today’s #bandofsketchers sketch prompted by ‘together’. This is a collection of stuff together on the chair arm. It is a was hard to decide what to draw, the prompt makes me think of groups of people, family, friends. Clearly I can’t do that. Also cats, if they were together, but our cats scatter to the four winds, unless they are play chasing each other. So I gathered a few things on the chair arm and this was the result.
