I just wrote this at Easter Chiltons blog, where the prompt was to use the word nose on some part of the limerick…
I hope you think this is funny! ๐

When I try and write limericks they sometimes go OK and other times they are a bit rubbish. With this one I was trying to write about something humorous about a cat in a box. But I found rhyming box too hard and swapped it round with cat. So I came up with this ditty… Not pretty…
A box was full up with a cat
Who also liked wearing a hat
He tried on a beret
That belonged to a ferret.
And shared all his food with a bat…

I wanted to write a poem that rhymed more. A lot of what I write is in blank verse (a poem where words don’t rhyme). I tried to do something more flowing here. Don’t know if it worked.ย ย (Could be a song?)
Different time
different place in space,
we’ve moved on,
you and I,
its a different sky.
My time is here,
your time has gone,
my life moves on,
you are almost forgotten.
Don’t force a smile,
you will be fine,
just let me go,
the stars say so.
Do say farewells,
and stay a friend,
but our sweet love,
must have an end.

What did I hear?
What did you say?
So many rumours fly this way..
What someone thought
What myth revealed?
What does this days news report ?
Breaking stories,
The fakes are out
Telling us all in loud shout.
The world is ending
Or soon will fall,
Is there nothing
To do at all?
Step back,
Breathe deeply
Take a break,
Switch off your phone,
Some news IS fake.
Instead you should
Go rest and sleep.
Maybe tomorrow
Sense will seep
Into your mind
Into your dreams
“Hope springs eternal”
It now seems.

It’s not very good, it sort of rhymes but the fourth line is a bit weak and the fifth needs a better ending.
The challenge was to write something funny. But limericks are not that easy, for instance sometimes writers repeat the first line in the last one…
For instance “there was an old man from portmadoc” might end “that wise old man from portmadoc!”, which is a bit of a cheat really. Maybe my limerick is a bitย inappropriate, but I based it on the current situation. X

We live in difficult times,
In a bubble where nothing can touch us,
In a dream world of Internet lies,
In a world where one touch can kill us,
Yes we live in interesting times.
We live where a cold can be fatal,
Where a virus is writing our fate,
In a world where borders can’t save us,
We must act before it’s too late.
Don’t think the world is over,
We must fight till the end is right here,
No one knows what resolve will save us.
But we live in interesting times.
I can’t watch it,
too much to see.
So many problems,
so much poverty.
Instead I listen,
I’m listening to the fridge,
it crackles and hums,
it’s never been right,
since we got it last spring.
I listen for the kettle,
time for a drink,
a warm cup of coffee,
while I sit and think.
I listen to the weather,
the sound of the wind,
hearing the rain,
on the roof its pounding!
I listen to the cat,
soft purrs hit my ears,
a relaxing sound,
brings peace and stops fears.

Except when you put your claws in my knee,
Or sit on my chest so I can’t see!
Pin me down, like a cat up a tree.
I love my cat.
Except when you jump up and steal my tea,
Trip me up at night when I’m going for a pee!
Go and sit on somewhere I don’t want you to be…
I love my cat..
Except when scratch the side of the settee,
Scratch the furniture so I have to pay a fee..
Eat the exotic food I had from the sea.
I love my cat.
Really!

Leap up and fly
In the sky
Searching round
About the grounds
Of ancient house
Or garden, green
Faries fly.
They’re rarely seen…
They find the flowers,
Chase the wasps
Feed the bees
Have fairie tasks
Grooming beetles
Catching frogs
To ride around
The lake and ponds.
Never seen by mortal men.
They live in a fairie glen.
Enough of whimsy
My tale is done
The story, flimsy
But lots of fun.
(sculpture of a Fairy at Trentham Gardens, Stoke-on-Trent)

I keep watching cat videos and gifs
They cheer me up
And lift my gloom
Watching kitty’s
Chase round a room.
Jumping high
And leaping up,
Dogs get chased
And cats erupt
From stairways
Hallways
Up curtains
And onto of doors.
Cats abound
With barely a sound
Make me smile
And
Forget a while.
