Etruria Artists is on tonight. Starting an hour early at 6pm. If you want to come and have a go at painting, drawing or pottery come to the warehouse by lock 40 (summit lock ) of the trent and mersey canal.

Most art materials are provided or you can bring your own.

I’ve had some good times there creating art. It is an old building though and we do close over the winter as it’s only heated when we are in the building so the water has to be turned off in case it freezes and bursts the pipes. I’ve also helped people with advice for using different paints like Acrylics, Watercolours and Gouache…. I’m not trained as an art teacher but I do have some knowledge.

When you are an artist you get asked to do odd things. Our choir is going on a parade in May and everyone has been given a brolly (umbrella) to decorate. Thus is my idea for it. It’s already black and white so I thought splashes of red. Lips 💋 to symbolise singing and LMW which is the initials of the choir. (Loud Mouth Women). The choir sings all sorts of different songs and languages so the singing mouths are appropriate.

I hope they will be pleased with it.

Oak man

I’m a bit disappointed with my phones camera. Although this image of an oak green man came out OK three other photos of similar green men didn’t register. I think it’s because I have too many photos saved and as most of them are MB not KB they are too large as files so they take up too much space.

This oak man was for sale at the Dorothy Clive garden near Woore, Staffordshire. It was rammed with people, there was a great plant sale on, but it was crowded with hundreds of people. We struggled to get a seat and had a quick lunch. I usually go there to see the rhododendrons in flower but it’s a couple of weeks before they will be out in the quarry garden. In the meantime they had a massive plant sale with stalls so we came home with about 15 varied and interesting plants. Glad to be home to get a rest.

I like drawing digitally. I need to get my computer fixed (I’ve been saying that for a couple of years) the trouble is that I got a tablet, now I’ve got a smart phone. I can do so much without having to sit in a cold bedroom in winter. But in some ways I am limited. I can’t draw on this device like I had learned to on my old PC. I’m just worried I won’t be able to upgrade without losing thousands of saved images. I imaging the inside of my computer going rusty or with spiders inhabiting it!

Green glass

Frosted glass with fish etched into it. A glass made from an old wine bottle cut in half. I’ve had this and it’s pair for about ten years?

It’s good to recycle things, save things from just getting smashed and and thrown away. Mind you now I’ve posted this no doubt it will get broken.

I like the colour of this. I guess it’s rather like an apple green colour. Tasty.

The eyes have it

Put a picture of an eye or eyes up on a wall or building and crime drops. People are apparently influenced by an image of an eye. Perhaps that is why the story the handmaid’s tale uses the phrase “under his eye” as part of its narrative.

Eyes are all seeing, interrogative, piercing, but also are described as honest, kind, thoughtful, gentle.

Eyes are the windows of the soul. The look of longing, watching, friendship. Caring eyes. Intelligent eyes. So many descriptions. Your eyes weep, cry, shed tears.

Eyes linger on a sunset, watch the television, look back in anger. Using your eyes to see. Recognise your friends and family……

Dont let your eyes darken, grow clouded, become opaque with cataracts. Blink away tears.

Glance at the sky, watch a bird in flight, look at your watch, wear mascara. Stare at the world. Close your eyes, and, sleep.

Lifeline

So many years ago, 2003 was when I did this art work. The hand print was a photocopy of my hand I think. Then I used photoshop to add colours using flood fill and a drawing tool. Finally I used one of the texture tools to break the image up into shards.

16 years on its at my studio at Spode. I really want to do more experimental stuff. I have been trying to get in the front room where my computer is but it’s full of my partners train stuff which I don’t want to move.

Life can be complicated. You have to have give and take. That’s what my lifeline was shining I guess (although I don’t believe in that kind of thing).

Cat sculpture

My cat sculpture that I bought from a local blacksmith has moved since we had the shed put up. You can rest a plant pot on its tail. I love the glass eyes that she put in.

I would love to do a blacksmith workshop and learn how to do some basic twirls and twiddle.

I was so impressed by the skill of my friend. She has also got the ability to translate a 2d sketch that I did to a 3d sculpture.

Swirls

When I have had a long day I enjoy doing something creative. These were done with a couple of apps, sketcher free and picsart. I don’t know why I like swirls and spirals so much.

Anyway here are three iterations. The first was the most complex to create, the second and third led to the first. I started with bright colours and then reduced them by using the curves option, changing each colour to a more muted one and eventually grey.

I think I will just finish here. Today was very busy.
