Waiting for weather.

Sky keeps going dark grey, a sudden squall of rain then bright again, sunshine and showers. I’m watching the trees bend in the wind, the weather station anammometer twirling in the wind. In some places round here the power is out.

As I watch the blitzortung app on my phone I can see thunderstorms trundling across the country. Their trails changing from white, yellow, orange and red. White most recent, red in the past. You can track their movement. I’m not sure if they will get here or bypass us.

The weather is unseasonably autumnal. Festivals due to be happening thus weekend have been cancelled because of the strong winds. I’m sitting here in the dark. The radio is on. My hubby is making coffee and I’m waiting for the first flash.

Light through clouds

In the forest it was gloomy, rain had been falling all day, and a grey swirling cap of clouds seemed to sit just above the treetops.

As she walked into the clearing she looked up. No sign of sunshine. It was almost as dark there as under the trees. At least there was a pool which looked clear. She had got a camping stove and would soon be able to make a hot drink. This then would be her camping spot for the night. Only another 20 miles to her destination.

Then as she prepared her evening meal, the clouds started to part and light streamed into the glade.

The light seemed to trigger movement. All around her the ground seemed to lift up into humps which turned into writhing figures in human form. They had been held down by green tendrils of leaves. The green men. An ancient myth. She screamed as she realised they were surrounding her, mirroring the surrounding trees. Tendrils reaching out and pinning her to the ground. She had realised too late that they were carnivorous plants.

I like looking at clouds. I’m a member of the cloud appreciation society. I then like playing with cloud photos.

Does anyone else see a cat or a rabbit in the final picture. It reminds me of an inkblot test.

Cirrus clouds

I saw these clouds tonight. I think they are cirrus. One looked like a flying seagull? I think they were airplane con trails getting blown about on the wind.

Blue sky and wispy clouds

Flying high up above

Seagull flying

Wings outspread

Or an angel overhead.

Swooping down

And touching ground

Ultra marine blue

Beautiful hue.

Brightest clouds above

Expanding, flowing, love.

Swoop over head, peck at the sky.

Field of blue, arching inwards,

Nearer than infinity, but far.

Sun pillar

It was about 5 years ago when we were on holiday in Devon. We had arrived at the camp site late in the evening after a leisurely drive down from the Midlands.

As the Sun started to set we walked down through the dunes to the beach. My eye was taken by a pillar of sunlight shining from below the horizon where the Sun had just set. I have seen sundogs before (reflections off clouds on either side of and above the Sun that look like tiny parts of rainbows). But I did not know what this was. Luckily I had my camera with me and snapped these shots.

I later found out this was a sun pillar, caused by the sun reflecting off high icy clouds. I’ve never seen another one.

Shepherds warning?

The sky was on fire a few minutes ago. Such a bright red, as if the clouds were on fire. Now its faded to a pale orange. I know its just the reflection of the sun’s rays below the horizon hitting the base of a layer of clouds but it was spectacular.

I don’t think my phone gives it a true sense of how bright and gorgeous it was but it captured it better than my old one would have. I guess it must have a more sophisticated apature control. On my old phone the red would just have appeared over exposed.

This was a painting I did last year but I wasn’t satisfied with the result so today I have added white to the clouds. Sorted out the curve of the earth and added shadows below the clouds to try and create a more 3d effect.

It’s half past midnight and I’m having a rest .

Afternoon sunshine

We came out of the cafe and the clouds had lifted in penkhull. The sun was shining and the breeze had dropped.

I saw a small plant with almost ivy shaped leaves and little white flowers with yellow centres. It reminded me of the woody nightshade we have growing in our garden.

I would have loved to take some seeds home but didn’t see any on the plant

I’m trying to grow as many interesting local plants in the garden to attract the bees. These were good because they are flowering right at the end of the summer.

I quite like asters and other autumn plants such as dahlias.

We did get some fluffy red valerian seeds. They make a bright display of colour in August onwards. They seem to grow out of cracks in the pavement. Much nicer looking than some other weeds or garden escapees.

I love clouds and skies, and when you multiply them and twist them you can create really interesting images.

Since I know what the objects are the title is pretty obvious. A church spire, or a terraced house roof floating in the sky can look very spooky though. Odd edges to the original photos create little details floating above or to the side of the main object. The best photos to use are mainly sky with the foliage or building in one corner.

The cloud scapes also help give atmosphere (pun intended) to the pictures.

I did consider making these black and white but I think the colours help.
