Soon to be over. That must of blue flowers will be gone. I’ve suddenly fallen in love with the romance of flowers! I don’t think I noticed them much last year and now it’s a revelation to see them in bloom. We have some bluebells but they are pink and white too. I think ours are the Spanish variety with blue Bell flowers all around the stem which is more upright and the leaves are wider and strappier. They are worth commenting on because of their gorgeous colour.
Make leaves fly
Of cold dry leaves
Kicked up and scattered
In November chills
Ice and water
Rain and gales
In the woods
Along the roads
Spreading far and wide.
View down a hill across the city as we were walking back home tonight. The street lights of the main dual carrageway road that runs through the city were shining brightly. Up here the view is across the valley of the river Trent. On a clear day you can see the way the land undulates towards the horizon about three or four miles away? There are hills to the left behind the buildings that rise up to a TV mast on a hill and then further on the green fields and pockets of woodland heading up to the Staffordshire moorlands. Straight in front and over the city hills would lead you eventually East into Nottinghamshire, and South the land is also covered in farms and woods, heading towards the Birmingham conurbation fotry or fifty miles away. We are an isolated city, surrounded by mostly countryside. A pleasant situation when so many other cities around England seem to be be surrounded by satellite towns. Fresh air is not too far away.
It was early one morning, I had to go out to visit a friend, but they were out when I got there. Which way to go home, the way I had come or the scenic route. It was a no brainer. I carried on into the beautiful countryside. I knew that the road joined up with a main road further on, but I’d never been up this lane before. Still I had the car window open. The sun was shining down on the local fields, the great avenue of trees along the road gave a cooling dappled shade. I came round a few bends, lowering my speed as the lane became more winding, narrower? That could not be right? I had driven straight along the lane. I knew it joined up further on? I kept going, now the trees were looming in on me. The lane became a rutted track. Nowhere to turn, could I reverse back? There was a fence up ahead. A gate in it had a blue sign on it. A sign with what seemed to be a face looking forward and two more looking to either side. Below that were the words ‘no Entry’ experimental research station. Where the hell had I gone….? There was an intercom box on a stone pillar next to the gate. I rang the bell, and after a pause a voice said, ‘state the nature of your business?’. All I could day that I was lost.
‘state your name’ the same toneless spoke again. I told them and just asked to be allowed through the gate so I could turn the car around. ‘wait there’ was the answer. I was standing by my car, the daylight starting to go… Waiting…. Waiting..
*NEWS* the body of a woman in her fifties has been found on a lane in Staffordshire. No marks were found on the body. But police say it may be a woman that went missing from her home a week ago.
All hallows eve. The night before all saints day, Halloween. October 31st. Tomorrow…
It was almost midnight. The moon was about half full, gliding in and out from behind the clouds. Smoke from an early November 5th bonfire drifted across the woodland. A mist was forming and swirling around the trees.
Why am I doing this? She thought for the thousandth time. Why do I want to be a Witch? It was all very strange. The recruitment, in a cafe! What did they think they were, spies?
Next to her stood her best friend, Gerry, she was slightly older and into Wiccan ideas, she had persuaded her to come along. Come on, whispered Gerry. It’s almost midnight.
They followed a short path through the trees. Their bare legs scratched and nettled. Not far now. They came out into a wide open space, a gap in the trees. One Oak sapling grew at the centre of the clearing. A crude rock alter lay in front of it. The clearing was full of women in black dresses and capes, holding broomsticks and with the traditional conical hats on their heads. She started to laugh. This was ridicuous. She shivered, all she and Gerry were wearing were dark cloaks like those of the women in front of her. What am I bloody well doing…..
Come forward, a tall woman ordered them. Kneel. Put your heads on the altar.
What? She struggled so two women grabbed her and pushed her down. She felt the slab of rock cold against her cheek.
People danced and a fire flickered, out of the corner of her eye she saw the leaves falling like snow from the trees although there was no wind or breeze.
She heard cackling laughter and the tall woman sat astride her broomstick. It lifted! Slowly the woman rose, all the while maniacal laughter flying from her mouth. Twice round the clearing. The witches gradually stepped forward and surrounded the two women at the altar.
The tall woman landed next to them.
You have both passed the test, she said. You are now witches. I salute you.
Would you like a Sloe Gin with tonic and ice ?
Through the trees there is light,
Through the trees there is air,
Through the trees there is water
but without the trees there is no life
no birds, no animals
no bears, no deer,
Without trees the air gets dirty
It gets dry.
Forests and jungles are our lungs,
life evolved in the sea,
came onto the land,
And in the forests of the land
there are more bugs, animals and possibly birds
than are found in the long grass
or desert plains
or high hills and mountains.
Save the forests, save the trees, save the world ..
