Apple lattice pie

20180905_154246

This is my part cooked pie!

I will add a photo when its cooked. I’m pretty sure it will have a soggy bottom. I’m using pre made puff pasty and some eating apples we got last week that needed using up. I lined a glass pie dish with foil and used butter to stop the pastry sticking. I had raised up the sides of the pastry and bent them in at the top over the top of the apples. I have put it in the oven on gas mark 7 for half an hour.

I can’t eat much sugar so have used a synthetic sugar substitute but because the apples are quite sweet I only used a couple of teaspoons of it.

Used one egg to glaze it, then realised there was too much so poured the rest into the pie through the holes in the roughly made lattice!  So basically it’s thrown together, and with the puff pastry it might be a bit flaky!

Will edit when its cooked!

In Space..

FB_IMG_1534013243816

No one can hear you scream!

So why add sound to movies set in space?…..I think the best film I saw was 2001 a Space Odessy, because instead of having the sound of engine noises the film has music playing over the space scenes. It is so atmospheric   (pun intended) because space is a vacuum and sound cannot propagate in a vacuum. There are not enough molecules for one to hit or push against the next and transfer sound vibrations to your ears. In any case if you were in space you would need a suit, so all you would hear is your own breathing and perhaps tinnitus or a rumbling stomach!

I know I’m being pedantic but I get bothered by mistakes or wrong assumptions. If you are going to watch a space film I think it should be made correctly.

There was an old man called Luke,

a flight into space he took…

No  squeak of a sound

in the vacuum surround

Could be heard, so he read a book.

I’m not saying there would not be sounds inside a space craft either, there will be an atmosphere so noise can travel through that. Which is why Apollo 13 could hear the gas tank rupture when they were on their way to the moon. But if you were outside …well you would not hear it, and if you tried to put your ear to it you would be dead without a suit on!

Anyway enough of my pet peeves.

Started again

I’m just starting a painting about 2ft by 2ft 6 inches.

It’s a view of the Spode site looking from the building that houses Hulton Pottery which is a small studio pottery on the Spode site, looking down the run of buildings then on to the iconic Spode Chimney that stands high above the site.

Spode is changing, parts have been demolished, other parts will be gone soon. However new people at moving into the studio’s on the site. Together with the visitor centre and the hotel it is becoming more vibrant and interesting.

Hopefully the weather won’t get too cold this winter, that’s what really puts me off going. I have a studio but my mind isn’t on things really. I have found it really hard to get motivated but perhaps I have turned a corner…..

So I will leave you with the beginnings of a painting..with luck I can get it finished soon.

Charlis

Charlis was her name, daughter of a satyr and a farmers daughter. Copper toned skin, hair like a golden fleece, known to everyone as the magic woman of her village. Only now could she really feel her powers, the thunder and lightning was pouring across the sky, as the sun set. Dark red clouds boiled over the landscape, each bolt of lightening flashed golden green in her eyes.

It had started quietly, women were washing their clothes in the stream, when slowly the water began to rise, some storm upstream was causing flooding. The men were called but could do nothing much, they battled to pull their chickens and goats up the banks of the river, to save them from the fierce tide of water and broken branches.

The day drew on and the rains started to fall faster and heavier, children sheltered under the eaves of the wooden huts, watching the water drip, then gush onto the ground before them. Drips of water made dancing faries in the puddles, but their parents knew the danger the were in. If the road to the village was washed away they would all be trapped.

Charlis had been sitting spinning soft wool from the summers shearing, golden fleece into golden thread. She was so engrossed that she barely heard the rain until a little girl ran past her hut looking for her father. Charlis heard her shouting out her fathers name and looked out of the door.

She stepped out into thigh deep water, pushing at her legs, making the way muddy and slippery, the pressure almist knocking her off her feet. A woman called out to her. Speak to the storm with your magic! Make it leave, you were a magical child, please help ?

Now Charlis stood looking down from the top bridge, delicate spiders web of ropes and wood, lying over the top of the stream, she turned and saw the flow of water well up, tree branches and trunks, bits of tiles from roofs upstream, mud, everything churning in the mass of water hurled towards her by the stream turning into a river. The storm was roaring overhead now. Lightening striking down at the tree tops , threatening to fell more trees and branches to pour into tge malestrom.

Not really understanding, she raised her arms up stretching her fingers out, facing the torrent, like a female Canute facing a rising tide she wished she could halt the roiling water.

Suddenly the lightening struck down and hit her, her body twisted under the force of it. Knotted muscles did not break, instead the power coursed through her. Down her arms it corruscated, her fingertips splayed, she directed the power into the water. Steam rose, heat and splintered wood swirled around her. Suddenly the river was cloud and fog, the pressure of water slackened and the debris from the flood fell to the ground.

Charlis was astounded that her gesture, made up of fear and love for her family, friends and neighbours had harnessed the power of the storm and turned it back jn on itself. She knew though that there was a reckoning, Balance must be maintained. She looked diwn at her arms, they were wrinkled and aged. She touched her hair, it felt straight and brittle, she could see it had turned completely white! Her power had been spent in saving her home and village. But it was worth it. Slowly she turned and walked along the quiet street. People gawped at her then recognised her for who she was.

For the rest of her days she was looked after by her neighbours, who never forgot her bravery and mastery of the storm.

Angel painting

IMG_20180904_003444_372

I don’t remember painting this but I have found a post on Facebook where a friend thanks me for it.

I’m glad I did it and I think I must have needed to paint it at the time although I’m not a religious person, but the idea of having a guardian angel does appeal. I’m not sure why I did a rainbow halo on it? I had an angel mirror on the wall in the bedroom for years so this seems really familiar in a dream like way.

I think I’m influenced by a James Stewart film with a character called Clarence, he is an Angel in the film. I can’t remember the name of the movie but James Stewart plays a banker who had been framed by a rich land owner for taking money when it was actually a total mistake. Stewart decides to kill himself and Clarence saves him only to be told by Stewart that he wished he had never been born. There follows a scene where Clarence shows him what the world would be like without him…..I won’t spoil this with the ending in case you have never seen it.

Anyway sometimes we all need an angel even if it is only imagined.

P.S. just remembered the film was called “its a wonderful life”.

What is this e-mail?

PicsArt_1535848297110

I have had an e-mail of WordPress.com from something called ICANN. I have no idea what it is about, it says something about the GDPR, about new rules on data protection.

I have not clicked on any links in case it is a phishing exercise. I have checked my anti virus and that seems OK.

Has anyone had anything similar.

I only use my own artwork. All the writing is my own. I don’t collect people’s ems addresses. I have already stated I the past that I am complying with GDPR.

I now intend to contact WordPress to ask them to explain what it is about.

If you have any information please let me know?

summer flavours

PicsArt_1535991893419

Summer and its flavours,

Crisp and crunchy flowers,

Take us through the hours,

of summer bright and light.

Hot and tasty bowers,

Nasturtium flowers are sour,

But sweet plums ripen here

In the shining Sun.

Before the ripe tomatoes,

Before the mellow mists,

Before the damp of Autumn,

Summer gives its gifts.

Sunshine and wild showers

Heat for many hours

Summer cooks its fruit,

Raspberries and pears.

Oranges and almonds

Appear on our tables

Strawberries of fable

Melt with mint and cream.

Plums and pomegranates

Begonias and daisies,

Lobelia and lemons,

Summer coloured sweet.

Now come the dark days,

Shorter every hour

Equinox is coming

Day will turn  to night.

Never lose the summer

Keep it in your mind.

Smell and taste its wonders

Soon to burst again.

I love the summer,

I love the light,

I hate the winter,

Brings on dark and night.

Spaceweather

image_2018-09-03_013943.png

I follow a website called http://spaceweather.com and I just read about a massive solar flare 159 years ago called the Carrington event. The flare caused a huge Coronal Mass Ejection of such force that it caused telegraph stations to be put out of action including telegraph paper catching fire. This all happened in the Victorian era, when electrical gadgets were very primitive.

Reading further apparently these events happen around every 100 years so we are overdue another one, the effect of which could be very serious for our modern electronic world.

There is lots of other information there if you are a nerd like me, including near earth objects that come close to earth (measured in multiples and fractions of the distance between us and the moon), information about comets and meteor showers.

Too many books?

IMG_20180902_232842_887

How many books is too many? I was counting ours a few years ago and when I got to over 1000 I gave up. We had books in all the rooms except the bathroom but they have also had to be moved out of the kitchen now it’s been modernised. If I could sneak a few cookbooks in I would, but then the books on trains would follow…

What books do I like?

Biography, Science, Astronomy, Autobiography, Physics, Maths, Science Fiction, Science Fantasy, Fantasy, Train books, Novels, Thrillers, Art books. Books about Pottery and Ceramics. Books about photography.

Books I dislike. …I don’t know..

So what do you do when you have a partner who goes out and  buys books from charity shops every week! ..? You send him back with ones to donate.  I have wondered if I should take some to a local second hand book shop but I dont know if they would take them.

I read books at bedtime to help me sleep. Some of the physics ones can send me off in minutes. At the moment I’m reading the Earthsea Quartet by Ursula LeGuin and 1356 by Bernard Cornwell. I have a copy of The Handmaids Tale I bought in the 1980’s by Margaret Atwood, and also The Colour Purple by Alice Walker. One book Richard introduced me to was A Canticle for Leibovitz which is a post apocalyptic story.  It’s very strange.

So yes I love these books, I would never get a kindle or e-book reader. There is something about turning paper pages, without having to charge the battery up just when you are mid chapter, also if you drop a book when you fall asleep it doesn’t break the screen, and yes I have read books in the bath… they can get very soggy!

Archery today

Untitled_001

We started going to archery a few months ago, but had to stop because I got busy doing art, or visiting relatives, and Richards back has been playing up.

So we decided to go back today. It was overcast and a bit blustery but we were only shooting arrows over about 20 yards, which isn’t far, even with the junior 16 pound bows we were using. I managed to get a gold and so did my partner, but we were watching the other archers, who are more experienced, shoot 50 and 80 yards.

I decided to have a try at 50 yards, you have to elivate the bow more,  I ended up aiming at the roof of a house. I actually managed to hit the target after trying several shots that either went short or left of the target. As the morning passed we were both getting closer to the gold  (center of the target ).

It’s surprising how tiring it us pulling even a low poundage bow, some if the people there were pulling 40 pound bows. But looking back in history archers could pull far heavier bows than that. They started around age 4 and were given 4 arrows. They then has to practice every day. Archers ended up with massive muscles and deformed backs because of the strain they were putting on them.

At the end of the session we were shooting at the 80 yard target, I was getting tired and my bow arm kept dropping, but despite not hitting the target I was making he distance. My arrows wavered and wiggled as they flew through the air, but they got there. I was shooting with sites but they didn’t help much. I just had to vaguely aim at a clump of trees.

I think we will go back next week….
