A handsome dog

A friend was doing some work on our garden today and he bought his dog with him. This is him sitting in the Land rover. He enjoyed coming out and seeing us working along the alleyway.

He has such a nice friendly nature, he put his paw up and wanted his chest rubbing. Then he let me scratch him behind his ears. I loved him pushing his head into my hand. He even licked my nose.

I know he’s a collie dog and he should be herding sheep probably. But it was just nice to meet a friendly animal. He only barked when the Land rover left, because he didn’t want to go!

Sore throat

Untitled40_002

Over the last couple of months I’ve had a sore throat every few days. I don’t know why. I think it’s to do with the weather. We have warm weather, then cold. I feel fed up because I have things I want and need to do but I don’t feel up to it. Even my ears are aching. I guess I’m moaning about something that is very minor and trivial in comparison with serious illnesses.

I will take some tablets and get some throat lozenges…. If I’m quiet here (pun intended) you know why.

Kittens

Two years ago we had four tiny kittens, only a few weeks old, eyes barely open.

So cute…. a few weeks later they were climbing the curtains and up the wood chip wallpaper in the front bedroom. Sneaking downstairs (they were born in the front bedroom). Climbing up inside my trouser legs (ouch). Playing with string, cat toys, a plastic ball with bells in. As their teeth grew they enjoyed charing each other and nipping and pawing waving tails.

The joy of kittens. Unfortunately they grow into full size cats…. But all four  went to good homes. Two boys to one home, two girls to another house. All of them are happy and healthy.

Youdraw

One of my favourite drawing websites over the years is Youdraw.com they were trying to collect over 500,000 drawings to bring people’s attention to population growth. I had the pleasure of drawing there, and sometimes the pain of moderating it.

Unfortunately these are distorted, they were originally drawn in long thin boxes but the WordPress system has turned them into squares.

I stopped drawing there because I had computer problems then started using a tablet which doesn’t let me draw there.

The site has a tiny space to draw in and only has a thick and thin black pen and a thick and thin eraser. But you could work out how to erase and then redraw so you could get some impressive shading results.

I miss the old days. I’m glad I saved a lot of my old drawings.

Cat yoga

IMG_20190329_235144_529

I sometimes think yoga should be a cat thing, they seem to be able to move so flexibly, instead of the downward dog you would have the crouching cat. Or the rear leg stretch.

I don’t know about a cat litter squat though!

But that thing when they fall and flip over so they land on all four feet is amazing!

When they run at fast speeds around the room they can leap and turn like lightening. I would take a photo but they move to fast, paws up, back bent into incredible curves.

Jumping and flipping over, landing on their backs with a fierce growl or a gentle purr…..

Talking

sketch-1553899648998

The world is full of words

Talk is cheap

Grey green gold gossip

Muddy, murky muttering

Sharp staccato shouting.

Pink pretty pouting purring,

Cracked cramped cackles.

Light lilting, laughing lullabies…

Singing or sonorous sound scapes

Violent verbosity

Quiet qualities of queen’s English.

Extravagant evangelising.

Whispered wailing.

Yes words are cheap and cheerful or cheerless.

Film festival

We went to the first day of a three day film festival tonight.

After being entertained by a steel band and having food and drink laid on we watched visionary filmmaker Spike Lee’s film Blackkklansman. Starring John David Washington as the first African-American detective in Colorado Springs.

An American movie set in the 1970s about a black American police man, Ron Stallworth who infiltrated the KKK, the American racist organisation. The film is based on his true story. He rang up after reading an advert by them and was surprised to be invited to join them. By working with his white partner he managed to be accepted by them. A white colleague took his place when he was due to meet them face to face.

As the film moves on I started to understand why there was civil unrest in the 1970’s and began to realise that things have not changed that much even now.

Watching the last few minutes literally struck home at how things are still bad for the black community. I’m not a film critic, but I think it was worth watching.

Candle light

The candle flickered and guttered as the front door opened. Jim entered the room with a flurry of snow. The cold air made a hole in the warmth.

‘You OK’ he asked? ‘Yes just about’ , said Sarah. ‘I kept the wood stove burning all day, but the power went out half an hour ago so I lit a candle ‘.

The weather had been mad since the 20’s. Global temperatures had continued to increase, but this winter had been wild. Snow had fallen for three months now. Sometimes they managed to get out to the shops, but they had to walk down the hill over the fields because the lane was full up with snow. It was one of those deep lanes which had been worn away over the centuries. The land around it was about 6 foot higher. In this snow it was impossible to get along because of the drifts.

‘So how many tablets have you got left?’ asked Jim. ‘Five’ she said. ‘I will have to get down to the village soon’ he thought for a second. ‘What about the weather?’

‘I heard the report before the power went off – bad for two days, then it might break?’

Jim looked at his wife, pale and thin. She was shivering with cold. ‘I’ll fetch you a blanket’ .

Later as they lay on a mattress infront of the wood burner, he looked at the ceiling and watched the last glimmers of the candle. He listened to her uneven breathing, a harsh rattle sometimes breaking into the rhythm of sleeping breath. ‘ Oh lord ‘ he thought, ‘let the snow stop, let me get her medicine, let things get better’ .

Three weeks later as the snow turned to rain, and the land flooded, the local police came looking for them. Inside the living room they found their bodies..

A note was on the table under a burnt down candle. ‘I can’t live without her’ was the simple message he had left.
