Why is snot green?

I’m feeling quite unwell, sneezing and coughing, so I had a chat with my hubby who studied science.

The answer is it doesn’t have to be. It depends on the bacteria causing it.

Sorry if you are eating.

It’s a complex muco polysaccharide according to my hubby, made up of sugars in very long chains. It acts like a dye. Being green or yellow or other colours. It depends on the bacteria causing it. Viruses are colourless so I guess if you have one and get coloured mucus you might have a secondary infection?

So anyway on that note I will get some honey and lemon.

Parliament is not prorogued

I don’t often put news on this page but this is historical.

Our Prime minister, Boris Johnson decided to prorogue parliment for five weeks before it could decide what to do about Brexit, which is due to happen on 31st October 2019. (Brexit is Britain trying to leave the European Union). He did it to stop MPs meeting and stopping him from working towards Britain leaving without a deal although he said it was so he could write a Queens speech (when government say what the legislation in the next year will be).

This was challenged at the Supreme Court because the members of Parliament argued that this was wrong and had stopped the working of MPs.

After hearing the evidence last week, the Supreme Court (the highest court in the land) gave a unanimous verdict by 11 judges that proroguing Parliament was illegal because it stopped it doing its job. The prime ministers action was illegal and his advice to the queen to ask for permission to do it was unlawful .

Our government has been found not to be acting lawfully. The ruling means that parliament has not been prorogued, and that the speaker of the House of commons (the chamber where MPs sit) can recall it immediately.

This judgment reaffirms that the executive (the Conservative party) which is in power, is NOT above the law.

It is now being discussed on the TV. There is a lot of arguments, but it really is historical. Its very complicated but I hope I have explained clearly.

Sneezing and snuffling now. I’m really tired. I just found an old digital drawing I did on the youdraw.com website. It depicts a sleeping woman and I think that’s meant to be a handkerchief. I get colds this time of year (this was on my Facebook memories)

I’ve got to get on and paint. I’ve been distracted recently. I’m going to get my paints and brushes out tomorrow.

This is a close up of my Holly and Ivy painting that I started a couple of weeks ago.

We live in a world where art can be worth millions or pence, where there is no set price for anything. If you buy a TV they generally are a certain amount of money. If you do a painting of a TV then it seems to depend on who painted it, how well known they are. Whether there is a resale value. It also seems to depend on scarcity and if the person is alive or dead when generally the art is worth more. It’s a funny old world.

Anyway all that said I think art is important and I will keep making it.

Autumn equinox

When the sun sets tonight in the Northern Hemisphere night will last slightly longer than day. In the Southern Hemisphere day will now last longer than night. In six months time the tables will be turned as North heads back to spring and South to autumn.

Mists and mellow fruitfulness is the phrase from a poem I always think of. Finding mushrooms in the garden, seeing Robins looking for food, seeing the leaves change. Already there are tinges of red and yellow on the bigger trees, I think because, being higher up, their leaves feel the chill first. Driving up the local hill you see more changes. Presumably the trees on the lower slopes are more protected. Perhaps its a micro climate?

In a few months it will be winter. I’m hoping things don’t get too cold. But maybe I should hope for cold to cool the climate?

Someone said its spider mating season

It’s webby in the summerhouse

It’s webby in the shed

There’s more silk than a silk kimono

Slung along the hedge.

The spiders spin such grand big webs

They catch the birds on high

They set great traps for insects,

And grab them from the sky!

A huge big spider

Came to visit

And stayed for a year

Now its little offspring

Are always very near!

Hover flies

Daliah with hover flies. Another form of pollinator. They are so similar looking to bees with yellow and black stripes although they are quite a bit smaller. They really do hover almost like humming birds.

I like these daliahs, I like the simplicity and bright colours and because they are not double flowers the insects can get at the pollen easily.

Facebook problems? shake it up!

You know the feeling? You have a cute post on Facebook and you want to leave a comment. Or you read a friend is ill and you want to wish them well. Or your friend is moving and you want to offer to help?

But Facebook says! Posting has failed, or the post has been deleted, or some other problem. This is despite you creating the post yourself, and you haven’t deleted it!

What do you do? I tried looking for a page to report it. Then someone told me to shake my phone, apparently if you have a smart phone it opens up a page to report bugs.

Well I’ve been shaking my phone like a tambourine. I’ve reported lots of problems. One minute things seem OK, the next it plays up again. Maybe I write too much? Maybe I comment too much? I will definitely keep shaking my phone!

The sun fades,

There is more night than day.

Equinox

Change of season.

Leaves that were green change,

First pale then golden or red and russet.

Chill air frosts spiders webs.

Rain falls cold and drenching.

Flowers that were bright fade away.

Fruits ripen and fall.

Golden grain is harvested and brought in.

Stored and dried.

Winter is not here yet but gradually

So gradually, time leaps on.

Autumn shades will fade in turn.
