Finished painting?

IMG_20180803_171752_248

I’m calling this finished…for the moment, its a question of how much detail I can add….

I enjoyed painting him, but there is such a lot of fur, of different shades, tones and colours, that its hard to get it right. I hope his owner will like him.

I met a lady yesterday who happened to come in to the warehouse at Etruria where we are holding an exhibition and hands on workshops at the weekend at Etruria Industrial Museum – (see my previous blog). She showed me photos of her son’s work, it was stunning! He does paintings of horses, and the attention to detail reminded me of the work of George Stubbs, whose equine paintings are remarkable. We both agreed that Stubbs painting of the horse Whistlejacket is one of our favourite paintings.

So this little fellow will be off to his home soon. I enjoy painting pet portraits, its a challenge to get an accurate image the owner will approve of. There is something about portraits of people and animals that appeals to me.

Exhibition

Short notice I know….Its a steaming weekend with tours round the Etruria Industrial museum. The steam engine for Jessie Shirleys bone and flint mill will be fired up and the forge will be open further along the Trent and Mersy canal where it joins with the Cauldon canal. Also I think there will be organ grinders there. The exhibition  will be in the warehouse and hands on pottery is also on, run by Etruria Artists. The canal warehouse is by lock 40 on the trent and mersey. The weekend coincides with the opening of weeping window just down the canal at Middleport, this consists of thousands of poppies made out of clay and painted red. They are displayed pouring down the outside of the bottle oven at the Middleport pottery in Burslem.

The Flint mill is over the canal from Kilndown close, Etruria, stoke-on-Trent…  Come and see us if you can!

Late…..

A few years ago I promised to do a painting of a friends dog.

I did not realise that I would only now be painting it. Why? I honestly dont know, I moved, she moved her work place. We lost touch with each other. The photo sat on a shelf for years. I still had a contact number for her, and saw her relatives at various gatherings, but I didn’t do the painting.

Now I’ve told her I’m getting the photo back to her… I didn’t say I would do the painting, but I will try and get him done in time.

I might post a finished photo here, but if not it will be on my Facebook  Art page. I hope she likes it.

Snow

IMG_20180801_223026_651something cool on a hot evening…

❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄

Snow

Falling ice in slivers,

Mass of shakes and shivers.

The cold, blue white, icicle,

Rain turned soft, showy, beautiful.

All flakes are different they say,

None have the same symmetry. ..

Hexagonal, six sided

Wind and air embroidered.

Vast blizzard made of tiny stars devine

of silvered sheen, your shape defined.

Snow.

Cold.

White.

Feathered.

Chilling…..

Inkwell..

There is a particular filter on Instagram that I sometimes use when I want to convert colour photos to black and white. There are a few options you can use including one called willow I think, but I  prefer inkwell. I generally adjust the colour balance first and then go to the filters and choose inkwell. The blacks are rich and deep and the light and white colours are not overexposed. The grey tones are warm and the overall picture remains as it was when I took the original photos.  I generally don’t do any more editing than that.

One thing that can be confusing is when it snows, the image of the wire and gemstone ygdrasil tree hanging in our window , with snowy roofs behind is a case in point, I chose it from a tiny thumbnail, and now looking at it the sky seems a bit pink? Actually when you look closely you can see the brass ring on the window hanging is coloured. The world can be black and white without filters!

I hide myself away…

Here, behind this computer screen, I hide myself away,  within the social media that connects us day to day. ..

I am in contact with the world which all around me spins, and yet I am so far away, real life no longer wins.

My mind I linked to apps and sites, I have to get my fix,           of whiz bang colours, cats and dogs and all those selfie pics.

My eyes see you on glass and chrome, my fingers tap the keys, you see me on your 4G phone. There is no known release.

I’m trapped within this modern fun, and never see the sun,  nor move where air is fresh and free, my life’s a lonely one.

Angel

Sometimes I can be a bit soft hearted, soppy, I can’t think of the word to explain it. As I was drawing in Artrage oils this little drawing popped out of the screen do I decided to try and write a poem.

Sorry if its not hard hitting or current …maybe its a bit too like a hymn…

Angel flying so high,

You touch the sky…

Angel give me peace,

Sleep as release..

Angel sing sweet songs of love,

Give us comfort from above,

Angel glowing rainbow bright,

You are such a mystic sight.

Angel share with us your grace ,

Show the beauty of your face.

Angel please  do hear my prayer.

Keep me safe and free from fear.

Poster?.

IMG_20180731_124645_260

I’m trying to come up with a design for a poster. I may have an exhibition at the weekend and I needed to produce something I can put on social media.  The only problem is I don’t know until Thursday night if I can use the room or not. I’m experimenting with ideas and  I quite like the drawing I that I created for the background.

I have quite a few new pictures and I hope people will like them. I have to hang it myself, so it will be a bit difficult. It will beat the Warehouse at the Etruria Flint Mill in Stoke-on-Trent.

Im not sure if there will be more text on it. There will have to be more pictures. Anyway, more to follow I it happens !

Mark making

FB_IMG_1527072942495

This is a digital drawing that I did of a cave painting, ancient and modern in one picture.

The urge to make marks and create images seems to have been with humans since the stone age. I do wonder if Neanderthals were artists too? Perhaps someone out there knows if they were. Art seems to be intrinsic to humans , a way of visualising the external environment. Whether it was animals they hunted, or eventually farmed, they created images of them that are beautifully depicted.

As the millennia moved forward art continued, but also turned into pictographs, such as hieroglyphs, or other ancient languages. The words I am writing now have there roots in ancient art.

Of course painting continued, and people also created sculpture and invented ink and printing. We are the mark making hominids. Without art and language we would not have science, mathematics, map making, books. Art evolved into design, photography, architecture. Art and culture,  I wonder if music emerged at the same time as art. Possibly earlier as spoken language was probably used in parts of the ape family before home sapiens appeared. But to point at a cave painting and use a word for cattle, or hunt, or flock. Thats interesting …I’m sure there is a lot more information out there.

Whatever happened I feel there must be an “art” or “creativity” gene. I know I cannot do without mark making.

Potteries Morris Minor owners club – sketch.

FB_IMG_1532825083730

I went to a model train show last year and while my partner was looking at the model trains I decided to draw a Morris Minor that was parked outside. There were a few of them there and I had a chat with one of the owners. It turned out the people were from  the Potteries Morris Minor owners club. They love their cars and the Morris I drew was beautifully presented.

I decided to do the sketch before I realised I had not got anything to sketch with, I had a tiny sketch pad but no pencils… so I used what came to hand which was a black biro. The drawing was going well, but the biro ran out. Thats why part of it is blue. I could pretend it was reflected sky, but that is a lucky result if running out of ink!

Morris Minor cars are iconic. Thet are beautiful. They are classic cars, their shape is streamlined in that old fashioned way. They came in different shapes, my favourite is the Morris traveller. It looks different because it has wooden spacers between the metal panels. I wish I knew more about them!
