Watching ‘It’s a wonderful life’

A sstrange and eventually wonderful story of a man who loses everything including his family and identity. He is transported to a world where he no longer exists. Everything he ever influenced has been changed.

Like a Christmas Carol it tugs at the heart strings. If you have never seen it, find it. X

Stars James Stewart as George Bailey, black and white film.

At the waiting room gallery

Photo taken by a friend at the waiting room gallery a few months ago BV, (before virus). He’s reading, I’m tapping away on my phone. The surroundings makes it look like an old painting. Although it’s in a gallery I think it looks like a domestic scene. I love the atmospheric look of it.

Sunny for a while

Light at this time of year is always low. Striking across the ground rather than high above it. This is because the Earths Northern hemisphere tips away from the Sun. So much so that the North Pole dips into darkness in the winter months. Shadows are long now and when you do get into sunshine the light can be blinding from the Sun on the horizon. You can look for images of the suns track across the sky at different times of the year. It basically arcs round from East to West but tipped at an angle dipping more South as winter progresses, then from the winter solstice around the 21st of December, it starts to slowly work its way back up the sky until its almost overhead on Midsummer day at midday, then the cycle starts all over again.

Grand conjunction

My impression of Jupiter and Saturn

Every so often Jupiter and Saturn appear close to each other in the sky. That’s because Jupiter, which is the closer of the two to the Sun, goes round the Sun about twice as fast as Saturn. This month they will be in grand conjunction on the 14th of December 2020. They will be within about 1° of arc of each other. Jupiters four galilean moons (the four that Galileo discovered through his teliscope) will be visible too. The Moon will not be visible. So if you look South West on the night of the 14th you might just see the conjunction if the sky is clear. This is one of the best since 1262? Enjoy. Butterfly idea

Drew a spiral and duplicated it. (I think it looked like the cross section of a trunk). Then I drew round the duplicated pieces in black (using a symmetry tool so both sides match). It’s quite simple to do. I guess if I was cutting it out of paper I could have folded it in half and got a similar effect….

Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh

I know what Gold is, a precious metal but I had to look up Frankincense and Myrrh were. According to http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov :

Frankincense and myrrh are two olive plants from different species and genera. Frankincense is a hard, gelatinous resin exuded from the trunk incisions of the frankincense tree, Boswellia carterii Birdw. or other species in the genus Boswellia of the family Burseraceae, mainly from Somalia, Ethiopia, and India
Myrrh is an oily, gelatinous substance exuded from the bark of Commiphora myrrha Engl. or various other species of Commiphora, and can be classified as natural myrrh or colloid myrrh. Myrrh exists mainly in tropical and subtropical areas, such as Somalia, Ethiopia, and the southern Arabian Peninsula

So now you know!

Doodled face

We have come to the end of the semester at college but have been asked to create a new way of illustration over the holidays. So what do I do? I’m thinking of boiling some spaghetti and trying to colour it then manipulate it? Or getting some play sand and drawing with that. It’s not something an illustration would normally be made of, but why not?

Vaccine

How amazing to think that a vaccine is coming out for Covid19. If only fake news had not run like a virus through the Internet. There are also fears from other vaccinations in the past. The doctor who linked MMR vaccination to autism and who was discredited over it has not helped matters. At the end of the day we need to listen to scientists and experts. Yes we should ask intelligent questions, but this is a chance to get the ‘R’ number down below 1.

How would it have been if Edward Jenner had worked out how to inoculate people against Smallpox only to be told that he couldn’t use it to save lives? What about all those other viruses out there that used to kill people or make them seriously ill? If they didn’t die people sometimes had to survive in Iron Lungs when they had Polio. Now a new disease needs us to accept a vaccine that may not cure it but could be a game changer.
