My Triceratops

20180712_090935

Im not sure about the juxtaposition of these objects, and I’m certainly not sure if this is a poem, but I thought I would try and write something…..

Come drink at the mirror pool, my Triceratops

Dip your horned snout deep into its glassy surface.

Remember Rhinos or Elephants hidden in time drinking here.

Plastic, printed, broken foot….night light shines to light the way.

My Triceratops, a whim when bought, now friend.

Each brick and brack gathered and coveted. No space for you?

But still you stay….

Triceratops, on a tray, on the microwave…

How random is that place, how chaotic….

My Triceratops please stay.

Black and White cats

IMG_20180711_211331_553

Two tiers of cats, one tries to get higher than the other. Both sleep, then a tail flickers or a whisker twitches, and they wake, wash, then chase each other round the room, upstairs, into the front bedroom, thundering paws shaking the floorboards.

Hot cats sleep more in this weather, try to find cool places. The newly refurbished kitchen is ideal at night. Apparently there is a lack of insulation in the roof so it gets cooler in the evening. I walk in there and one cat is curled up in the fruit bowl and the other is lying on top of the cooker cover.

One morning this week the male cat was asleep in a box. Why would an animal covered in thick fur decide to take a nap in something that would make it warmer?

Black and White photos of black and white cats appeal to me. You can see more of the patterns on their coats. The background colours are not there to distract your vision and the gradation of greys makes for a more interesting picture.

Sometimes one cat is easier to take a picture of than the other. Our female cat is very friendly when she wants a fuss but more often than not she will find somewhere quiet under a cupboard to sleep. She also runs off when I try and photograph her.

They are a brother and sister…..but the male is twice as large as the female. I like it when they move in synchronisation or lie down in mirror image positions.

I love my cats, and I think they love me back.

Cats and keyboards

IMG_20180701_100342_679

“Get off you pest!” I don’t shout at the cat…

“You’re in the way,”  I think but stay silent.

“No paws here!” I meant to say, but no breath escapes…

“Ok, that’s my keyboard,” I mean to yell…

Curled up, cute, cuddly,  the cat snores.

“Shift cat, I need to type”, I quietly think.

“Your tail is in my paint! Don’t twitch it…”

“No, its gone all over the paper…Drat, Cat!”

Whiskers twitch, as quietly…

Curled up, cute, kitty, snores….

“No don’t lick that here! ” A feeble squeak emitted.

“Dont wash your paws in the kitchen sink,” I think…

“No furballs allowed,” I try not to choke,

“No cat food on the cupboard,” I cry……

Curled up cute, cat, snores…

All the world to rest in, and you chose this lap?

Go ahead cute cat, curl up kitty, and snore …..

Tubes

IMG_20180623_203352_596

I thought I would try and write a quick story for you….

Extruded tubes appeared before me, alien, moving like snakes towards me. Garish colours assaulted my eyes. Where was it from, what was it?

It flowed down from the sky one summer night, plastic, solid, opaque. Hidden from view in the forest until dawn light caught its curves. Like a gigantic chrysalis the shell began to split. Each tube containing an arm or a leg. Crawling out from its cocoon.

The weight and mass of the creature made the ground shake and tremble. Trees toppled around it as it raised its glistening body up to the sky. Woodland animals fled from it as its huge bulk shrieked as it moved. Yellow fluid steamed and it oozed from the monster. No shape like this had ever stood on Earth  before.

I cannot describe it, it did not resemble anything I had ever seen before. The only conclusion I could guess at was that it might be part of an invasion ? But what could it want?

The massive bulk moved closer to me. I had the intense feeling that it was trying to communicate. A gap opened in the side closest to me….

“Got any cheese?” It asked…..

Names?

IMG_20170817_230018_157

A name just came spiralling out if nowhere into my head…Archibald Cotton…

I dont think I have ever met anyone by that name, but it sounds friendly. I imagine him as a Victorian pottery worker. Stuck in a hot bottle kiln, walking up and down ladders with boards balanced on his head. The boards would have saggars filled with pots on them. Men would carry  heavy boards up into the kiln to load it. The saggers were pottery boxes that had  ware (pottery) put into them, to protect the pottery from the intense heat and smoke from the firing.

I imagine Archibald working as a child or older youth as a sagger makers bottom knocker. If I remember rightly they put the bottoms on the saggars, one of the lowest paid jobs in the pottery industry.

Archibald would have progressed to one of the other jobs in the potbank as he got older. Maybe a fettler, a sponger, lithographer, warehouse man. Maybe he left the potteries and became a miner, or worked on the railways or in the shelton steel works

When I remember the Stoke-on-Trent I came to live in a few decades ago, I think of the old empty pot banks, warehouses, derelict buildings. An industrial archeologists dream. Archibald might have done archaeology…a fitting name for that profession. He might have investigated the ruins of the 13 th century Hulton Abbey, in Abbey Hulton.

Perhaps this name conjured from my imagination really existed. I wonder if I would have liked to have met him?

You like miserable news.

IMG_20180529_000425

“You like your news miserable, you do” I said to him. “If its not sad you are not happy”. “It’s the religion I was bought up with, I can’t help it, we were told the world was going to end!”

“But it didn’t, it hasn’t, and even if humans disappear I think the world will carry on without us”…

We continued to talk about it, one argument laid over another, like a pile of folded clothes rising up in between us. Neither side was winning, just the usual grumble of disagreement that comes from being a couple for over 30 years.

“So you agree with me then?” The question insinuated itself into my mind. I tried to remember hearing what he had said a moment before, but there was a blank space where his words had been……”er yes?” grasping for some idea of where the conversation had got to. “Er. …. um,?”

“You know, I said it was all going to be a disaster”  “what disaster ?”  “That they are stopping making jelly babies!” “Why?”  “They are too wobbly!”

Remind me to listen in future…….

This is fiction, as far as I know jelly babies are safe and sound in their sweet jar. I just wanted to explain what happens when I switch off to what my husband is saying. I have to try and guess what was previously said, which can cause mild panic. …..!
