Warm Arctic?

I just read a post from a flat earther on a flat earth page asking why people can stand outside in the sunshine with just a tee shirt or hoodie on? I tried to answer.     

   Arctic and Antarctic summers happen at opposite ends of the year. In the North it’s around June/July and in the South it’s December /January. In the summers the temperature can rise well above zero, because in the summer months the sun doesn’t set (in the winter months it stays dark for several weeks), hence, yes people can wear hoodies and tee shirts. It’s getting warmer because of global warming and it means sea ice takes longer to form. In addition the temperature rises at the poles are happening more strongly than at other parts of the globe.    

I hope this makes sense.

Hopefully our Mystery day this July will get lots of 1 page plays to read out at Harpers Titchy Theatre!

The idea is that the plays are put on like a radio play, the meaning is in the intonation of the words, subtle drama, facial expressions.

Mystery plays

It’s been a few years since we did a full mystery play, but we are trying to put something on for it’s 25th anniversary.

We’ve lost a few people along the way through health issues and retirement, but there’s still enthusiasm there we just need to mine for it!

Currently we are looking at putting on a days entertainment but costs are staring at us, everything from insurance to road closures, hiring the hall, making props, writing scripts, organising stalls and first aid, morris dancing and a tug of war. Singing and playlets. We may miss out the play itself, it’s up in the air.

Social media helps connect us. I hope people are listening. We have an old Facebook page that was last posted on in 2019…BC…brfore covid…. Fingers crossed people get involved.

Shortest day

People were meeting for sunrise at Stonehenge this morning as today was the shortest day of the year in the northern Hemisphere. This is the Northern winter solstice.

Apparently the day was less that 8 hours long, although it was so cloudy and grey it might have been shorter for all I could tell.

Of course on the equator days and nights are pretty much of equal length and I presume the Southern Hemisphere had its longest day either yesterday or today. What will it be like in six months when it’s summer here again? Who knows.

Peaches

Peachs on a bush. This was an espaliered bush where the branches are held against the wall horizontally. This allows the fruit to set on the branches and grow bigger and more juicy as the summer goes on. The photo was taken at the Dorothy Clive garden n the Staffordshire countryside. I would have loved to have tasted one of them.

Petunias

Flowers everywhere. I love these deep pink petunias. It’s a close up of one of my hanging baskets. When the sun shines they seem to glow.

The head in the background is a ceramic one I made about 30 years ago. It’s got a few flowers trailing from it that managed to survive the winter.

There is an ancient song from the 14th century I think?

We sing this at choir practice (with slightly less difficult wording).

A writing prompt from Esther Chilton.

My favourite season is Spring. The anticipation of warm weather to come. Flowers and buds emerging after a bleak winter, and birds, bees and animals taking advantage of the newly green fields.

But to be honest this year the, spring seems to have started, but winter is still here in July. Low temperatures, low pressure and 80% of July’s rainfall in just 10 days in the UK has made for a dismal start to the summer. The jet stream is south of us scooping down cold and wet air from the Arctic.

Meanwhile Southern Europe is baking in record breaking heat with numerous deaths.

Hopefully it will turn into a mild autumn. Unless the weather morphs into a more wintery scene…..

Hot

The weather is set to be hot for the next few days, 30°C or 86°F. And the temperature will stay hot at night.

To some countries that is not bad, but here in the UK it’s unusual. We generally have humid weather, so it feels hotter than a dry atmosphere would..

We have a yellow warning covering most of England to say that elderly people or those with lots of co-morbidities should be careful. The weather is due to break down mid week and we can expect thunderstorms.

Sad marigolds

Marigolds in a bag, something seems to have broken the flowers off. I’ve got to get them planted but yesterday the rain fall was stupendous. Today the weather was better, but I am very tired. Tomorrow could be the day they get planted. Meanwhile, the forecast is for more rain and cold winds coming from the north. June seems to be below par for the time of year. But I’m determined to get my garden looking good instead of full of overgrown weeds!
