I’m not conservative

What traditions have you not kept that your parents had?

My family were traditionally conservatives. I was bought up to think that socialists were bad and would lead to serious problems for our country. But when I left home I started to see things in a different light. I had to look at how other people lived. There had been a lot of strikes, and people were struggling to survive. I found out things that had never been discussed at home. Thinking and listening to the words of John Lennons song Imagine really got to me. The struggle to manage when I was out of work for a short time. It made me realise how hard life can be for others.

My traditional upbringing included religion. The rules were set. Money had been important, but listening to Jesus teachings after I left home gave me more concerned belief that people deserved better. I became interested in equality for women, and I also supported charities that worked to save nature. I think leaving home gave me insights I would never have had before. It led to arguments with my parent, but I hope I changed her opinions too.

My bed

What’s the oldest thing you own that you still use daily?

We bought our bed when my grandma died using a small bequest from her. That was a year after we moved into this house, and that was BEFORE we got married, so it’s over 25 years old.

It’s saggy, I have a folded up sheet on the bit where a spring is sticking out, and the divan drawers collapsed years ago. It’s a big bed and I don’t think it will ever go back down the stairs as we have had to have an extra handrail put on them as we have got older.

Half the time the fitted sheets don’t fit (it’s hard to find king size sheets round here). Tracey Emin would love our bed. It’s surrounded by books and book cases. The bedroom is too small, but we sleep in it because it’s away from the main road at the front of the house which is too noisy in the morning (we live opposite a noisy factory).

Most nights are uncomfortable, the bed is supported by an old A2 drawing board under part of it and the base is collapsing from old age. We can’t afford a new one. I think we should save money specially to buy one, but then we need new carpets and my curtains are being eaten by moths. But that’s life, we have clothes and food. You just have to manage. I have a lot of older things, but not in regular use.

My hubby, by the way, regularly rides an eighty year old tourer road bike. X

Having all what?

What does “having it all” mean to you? Is it attainable?

I’d rather have happiness than ‘it all’ whatever that is? That could be money or personal belongings. But if billionaires aren’t happy or fulfilled why would I be. When I think about having it all I generally think of a lottery win, then I think about sharing my winnings, and whether there would be enough money to go round. And it’s not just family and friends, what about charities and support for other people. Why can’t they share in ‘having it all?’

I know about 80 men (not women) are richer than half the world’s population. That means 80 people have the same money as 4,000,000,000 men women and children. That’s insane. I don’t understand how they keep their money and don’t share it out?

Everyone seems to want ‘it all’ but what about fair shares? I can understand why if you have never had anything it might be attractive to have it all. But selflessness is surely a better way of living.

Life is difficult or almost impossible for a lot of people. The majority of people in the world  have almost nothing to live on. Who considers their needs? When political systems are more interested in corporate profit and money for shareholders than their citizens it’s not a good place to be…

And for me? I doubt it’s attainable now. I’m too old and grouchy to have it all!

Coins

Copper coins

Some younger people might not recognise these! Pennies and two pence, change from all those £*. 99 purchases. * being 0 and above pounds.

When British Money was decemalised in the 1970’s we went from 240 pence (D) in a pound (L). That was made up of 20 shillings (S) each of twelve pence. And the shilling was also made up of two sixpence, or four threepenny bits, or 24 half pence or 48 farthings (1/4 of a penny) and apparently there was a mite (1/8 of a penny). There was also half a crown which was two shillings and sixpence. (a florin was two shillings). A crown was five shillings. Ten shillings was half a pound and twenty one shillings was a Guinea. Somewhere among the smallest coinage were groats…..

Hence the Pounds, shillings and pence, or L. S. D. You can imagine how confusing that was for a child. My pocket money was either two threepenny bits or a sixpence, going up to a shilling as I got older.

When we went to 100 pence in a pound, the smallest coin was 1/2 new pence (p), a new penny came next, two pence (all copper coloured), five pence (silver coloured) ten, twenty and fifty pence. The fifty and twenty are not round but have seven sides I think? Eventually the half pence was discontinued and later a bi coloured pound coin was bought in, followed by a bi coloured (bronze and silver coloured) two pound coins.

So we get to recent times where notes are now plastic instead of the paper and rag (cloth was used for strength) notes of the past.

Coins and notes are still used, if you can’t afford credit or use the Internet it’s still needed. But smaller denominations, like pence, might disappear. Some of the coins have got smaller over time. Will we see king Charles third on coins? I guess they will be introduced over the next few years. Maybe the copper coins will disappear soon.

(The .99 pence idea fools you into thinking you are spending less than a full pound £1.00) well you are but only 1% less!

Parsimonius

I must be parsimonius

The door stays locked

Money is a great big fuss

Payments will be stopped.

My purse is not bottomless

The moths are growing big

The dust in there is limitless

While fuel bills they still rig

The cost of living crisis

Has got us by the throat

Money goes by osmosis

Out of a sinking boat!

So now I will spend less

Cutting my money cloth

Mcawber rules I will address

No cash now for froth!

Five hours!

My brain hurts! It’s taken over 5 hours and I’ve got a lot of my apps working on this new phone but I can’t get my emails back. It’s driving me bonkers (mad). I will keep trying, or go back to the phone shop on Monday. Luckily I’ve got it to work on my old PC.

This phone has double the memory of the old one and a better camera, but it cost only 20% of the price of my old one.

Now I need to keep concentrating on things and stop moaning about it!

Reach out to WordPress?

I keep trying to submit a question about Jetpack to WordPress but the support submission form won’t open. I filled in a question on another page but at the bottom it said this comment box is not for questions and to use the support form. So I tried and it still won’t open. I feel like I’m going round in circles and that people like me are too unimportant to WordPress.

This is what I wrote:

I don’t have enough memory on my android phone to add another app. I’ve asked what to do and someone suggested deleting other apps but I use them daily. Or I get messages that deleting them will affect the performance of my phone. I cannot afford a new phone (I can’t afford to pay for fuel, how can I pay for a phone?) This is stressing me out and I only have five days to try and work out what to do. I feel this is for the convenience of WordPress and Jetpack and not their customers. I’ve been told to ‘reach out’ but don’t have a solution. I will have to spend my pension money on a new memory card if I want to keep using WordPress on my old android phone, I feel so frustrated about this.

Postponed craft fairs

Sadly the two craft fairs I signed up for have been postponed because they fall too close to Christmas, there are other similar fairs on at the same time and the cost of living makes them less likely to be profitable because no one will have any money.

I would like to participate in ones next year but how can I be certain that things will be any better then? People are going to suffer financially and luxuries like arts and crafts may not be saleable. The whole idea of being an artist and trying to sell work seems less and less feasible.

Meanwhile, I’m seriously thinking about leaving my studio at Spode. I didn’t use it very often since Covid happened because I’m still avoiding people. I don’t know if I can afford it any more. Life isn’t terrible but sometimes you need to be sensible.

Baked beans

I went to buy a few groceries today and was shocked at the price of a branded can of beans. £1.45! The shops own brand was 36 pence a whole £1.09 less. So the most expensive can was four times more !

This is madness, the food you buy is costing more and more. But why should something cost that much more. I wonder how much more they will charge if they can. How much is because of limited stock, the cost of delivery, manufacture or because of making profit from people who can’t afford the increasing cost. This would be difficult to determine, except for the cheapness of the other can!
