A bank holiday in October

Invent a holiday! Explain how and why everyone should celebrate.

The UK has bank holidays in winter, spring and summer, but nothing in Autumn. We have Rememberence day and Guy Fawkes night in November. But some people don’t get many days off in the year, so why not?

The government would no doubt object to this day off, because it would reduce productivity. But if they had their way we would be on fifty or sixty hour weeks. Elon Musk said this week that all jobs would be taken over by AI or robots, so why not start working towards it now? We could have Autumn cards, buy jigsaw puzzles of gorgeous trees, or squirrels and their nut collections. Hazelnut or Cob nut cakes? Conker fights, displays of autumn flowering crocuses. I would also keep British Summer time so that the evenings stayed lighter and it would cost less in power usage!

Which holidays?

How do you celebrate holidays?

There are holidays and holy days? Some countries have more of one sort than the other. It depends on where you live.

It also depends on what your religion is, if you have one.

Some holidays are based on Saints days, like St Patrick’s day in Ireland, St Nicholas around the world, many different saints in Christian countries, prophets in others.

Other holidays are based on different deities. From Hindu to Buddhist, Zoroastrianism, Islam, Judaism, they all have holidays, some are celebrated by multiple religions, others are unique to one clique of one subdivision of a religion.

I celebrate Christmas and Easter, but as I’m not a strong believer I do not go into it deeply, I just appreciate the history of the celebration and possibly attend a service at our local church. But I am not intensely involved.

Holidays, as in travelling, or visiting other towns and cities IS something I truly celebrate. With the Covid infection, cost of living crisis and other problems I rarely get time to take a real holiday. As a pet owner, the time we can spend away is limited, I cannot afford to put my pets into accommodation, so we only stay away for short breaks.

So that’s my holiday celebrations, a bit sparse, but I enjoy what I can.

Votes for women

Today is International Women’s Day and out local theatre, the Mitchell Memorial Theatre is showing archive footage from history of the Votes for Women movement more than a century ago.

Even now Women in the world do 2/3 of the work for 1/10 of the pay. When you compare that to the 80 richest Men in the world own the same as half the worlds population about 3,500,000,000 people. Women are restricted by laws and religious beliefs. They often only get basic education and are sometimes forced into marriage as children. The World is an unequal place. If you are holding international Women’s days events I hope they are well attended and go well. X

Just making a trifle

I usually make a trifle at Christmas, but I’m doing it for New Years Eve and Day this time (so it will be a two year old trifle!).

This is only the start, but it looked so pretty. I’ve put a pint of sugar free rasperry jelly (made up with half a pint if boiling water and a quarter of a pint of cold water and a quarter of a pint if sherry. (jelly is not the American version of jam, but is it called jello). I added chopped strawberries and whole blackberries to the liquid. Any slightly mouldy ones are going on the bird feeding table tomorrow, they have been washed and are back in the fridge.

Tomorrow I will add strawberry blancmange (a type of flavoured custard), as I don’t like custard which some people use. I make that up with a pint of milk and sweetener ( I avoid putting sugar in). Finally I whip double cream, (heavy cream?) about three quarters of a pint till it makes stiff peaks. I might add spare blackberries for decoration. I might take a photo tommorow when it’s finished. What to do for New Year’s Eve.

I guess we won’t be going anywhere this New Year’s eve. And yet that’s not a bad thing. Usually we visited friends to get away from the noise at the pub across the road. They were always rowdy and played very loud music that had such a loud base beat that it shook the house. Dum dum ddiiddi dummmm.. Each year seemed to get worse. I didn’t complain because that’s what people do.

So what shall we do, we might go for a walk in the afternoon if it’s not too icy. I think it would be nice to find our scrabble set, or a chessboard. I do sound like an old fuddyduddy, but I just want to be cautious. Virus news is that the infection is escalating. I’d rather stay in and be safe….

His birthday

DSC_2461

Another year towards three score years and ten? I’ve had a quiet day with him today. Is it true men get grumpier with age or is it just the current situation? This is a ‘reading the paper’ face.

How do you keep safe in the world? He does the shopping at the moment as I need to stay in. But we had a trip out today, the pharmacists is not within easy walking distance, so I drove us there. Then a little detour up to the shop on the hill to get supplies and a few beers for a birthday drink. I did that because I knew what I wanted and I’m quick when it comes to shopping. Narrow isles meant some dodging backwards and forwards to leave a healthy gap between customers.

Then back in the car and down the opposite hill to give the car a bit of a run. (It’s been sat for a week and with cold nights I was expecting it to have a flat battery, but it had started first time).

Tonight I went and got us a takeaway Thai meal as a treat. Restaurants are allowed to sell take away food at the moment. (so much for me staying in!)

But that’s why I’ve been quiet today. Quietly celebrating my hubby’s birthday.
