Why can I see an Owl?

Two eyes and a beak, that’s what I can see. I don’t know whether you can see that too? I also see Wales as the shape of a pigs head and Devon and Cornwall as a pigs leg. Scotland looks like a victorian bonnet and the East Coast of England looks like a bottom or a bustle. This is called Pareidolia. I was talking about it to a friend and he sees Wales as a witch? So even though you can look at an image and see something, it won’t necessarily be the same thing. I don’t think everyone has this strange way of looking. Maybe it’s an evolutionary thing? If you can see the tiger in the bushes you can run away before it pounces. It’s your brains interpretation. It can be strange.

Heart

How many hearts did I draw? I can’t count them. They took a while to sketch. I’m not sure what I drew them for. I think I’d like to see more love and peace in the world. I would rather draw something like this in the situation the world is in at the moment. I know I can’t change things much, but I can say it. Life is difficult for so many, but the John Lennon song ‘Imagine’ , and also the song ‘Give Peace a Chance’ mean a lot to me. Maybe we should try and do that?

Clean phone..

Get random photos.. I needed to optimise my photos because they were taking up too much memory. So I optimised and deleted 450 originals. The only problem is you get a random selection that is out of order when you go back in your gallery. This set of plant saucers came up as recent! Filled with water and set in a slight slope the birds seem to like them. Memory saved? About 950 megabytes!

Awesome

Today for #bandofsketchers we had to draw something ‘Awesome’. One thing I’ve always wanted to do is see the Aurora Borealis, northern lights. The electrons in the solar wind get trapped by Earth’s magnetic fields and get drawn to the north and south poles. There they are drawn down and they interact with the magnetic fields and great auroral lights illuminating the sky. The Southern lights are called the Aurora Australis.

Clematis faces

If you duplicate or mirror an image, then turn it on its side you can get some quite interesting images. This was clematis growing along a fence, but something magical happens when you add some bilateral symmetry. The fence spikes look like goats or sheeps horns. There is something that looks like eyes and if you look closely you might see faces? This is an example of my Pareidolia. I see faces in a lot of patterns.

Horse Chestnut

Horse Chestnut leaf today. On a sapling. The leaves are larger than a man’s hand, deeply segmented and split into seven sections. The tree will grow very large and when it starts to flower it will grow large white flowering bracts. Then in the autumn it develops nuts called Conkers. These are encased in a spikey shell that you have to peel off. This is the thing that children make holes through and then use to play the game conkers. Basically each person has one of them. They drill or pierce the nut with a skewer fron the top to the base. It is then threaded onto a string. Two children / people stand opposite each other. One holds up their conker and swings it at the other one. If it hits it can either knock the other conker or split it. If it doesn’t break the other person takes a turn. The conker is called a “one-er” if it survives. Each time it doesn’t break the number goes up, so “two-er” and so on. Some people bake conkers or soak them in vinegar to strengthen them.

So basically when you hear about a game of conkers that’s what it is. The trouble comes when you try and get them off the trees. We have a row of them on the main road. Children throw sticks and stones up at the branches to get them down which can be a hazard if you walk or drive underneath them.

Goslings

We had a little walk today and came across these three goslings taking a stroll along the canal towpath with their mom and dad. The parents were very protective and we made sure we kept away from them. I snuck a quick shot and then cropped it later so that they are easier to see. I think they have slightly longer legs than ducklings. They can’t be very old as they are so small. (parents were Canada Geese).

Forgetting

I couldn’t find a photo of a forget-me-not so here’s a bluebell. I rushed out this afternoon for an Art Lunch session. I went and bought a couple of cakes and some sandwiches. Then I went to the venue. No one was there. We asked a volunteer but he knew nothing. Then we walked down to another building on the site, it was locked. I realised that a friend was at work on site so we went and asked her. It’s next week she said! I had got mixed up over the dates. I’m usually better than that. I hope it’s only a touch of nerves because I’m waiting fory MA result next week. X

Leopardess

Here is a better photo of my mural that was destroyed in a fire at the Leopard Hotel in Burslem earlier in the year. The landlady was said to have come over from the Caribbean and married an English man. She then ran the hotel. The trouble is I painted this in 2006? I honestly can’t remember the story I was told and now the hotel is gone.
