Photo walk

About 5 years ago we went on a photo walk around the north of the city of Stoke on Trent in a town called Tunstall. The idea was to do a circular walk encompassing greenways around the town that used to have a rail line and that runs between terraced houses on a raised path. There are bridges over paths and tunnels driven through the ground.

I used my old phone so the images are not brilliant. The day started overcast then it started to snow as we walked along the path. We came out onto the side of a newly built section of road then followed the path round up a hill before coming out at an old pub (can’t remember it’s name) where we stopped off for lunch and sat next to a real coal fire to warm up. Then off through local streets to finish near where we started outside the local health centre.

Photos include trees, train signals, walking along the path. A terraced house. The corrugated side of one of the tunnels. One of the metal greenaway signs, a dandelion growing on the side wall of part of the path, and bracket fungus growing on an old wooden post.

I’m hoping to go on another photo walk, may be when the weather is a bit better. The idea of looking at industrial and post industrial landscapes fascinates me.

Dawn chorus

_20190223_044511

It’s twenty to five in the morning and I can hear birds singing outside on this cold February morning. We have been feeding the birds over the winter and last week my partner invested in an extra long bird feeding tube to accommodate them.

We have had house sparrows  blackbirds, blue tits and great tits  robins, and a tiny wren visiting the feeders. There are also wood pigeons and a collared dove that visits and a grey squirrel that hangs upside down from a branch and takes food from the feeders too.

When a blackbird sings its usually on top of the neighbours chimney or high in the branches of a tree. You can tell the age of a blackbird by its song. As it gets older the song becomes longer and has less repeats in it. Robins are also beautiful singers with sweet liquid notes which are a high volume considering how small they are. The other tiny birds make less interesting cheep cheep or tsee tsee songs, one makes a teecher teecher song, and there are individual whistles and tunes. There are sometimes magpies which chatter away. I always know if the blackbirds have been disturbed because they make a loud pink pink pink noise to confuse predators such as cats.

In fact urban birds are apparently louder singers because of having to sing above traffic noise.

This year we have bought an extra nest box and placed it in the ivy next to the window. This offers cool shade when the sun gets hot in the spring..

Well I go back to bed now as the chorus seems to have died down. Other early things happening are blue bells coming into flower in February (they are in a box by the house) there must be a bit of a microclimate  but everything, including the temperature, seems too soon this year. Maybe it’s to do with the jet stream and global warming?

Bones

Funny what you can find in a pub. This skeleton is plastic and sits in the corner of a local pub, next to the fire. I called the drawing the regular, he has been there for a few years. There is also a pretend skeleton of a dog behind him. Also you can see the top of a guitar next to him. That’s because I drew this on music night. The sketch pad is about 4 inches square and I have a drawing from 1995 in it of a place called Winnats pass in Derbyshire. _20190222_235651

I’m tired because I’ve been at the panto all evening so this is a  very short blog post and also a short poem

How much?

Watching daytime TV you see all sorts of advertisements. There are life insurance plans, double glazing, furniture, Bath seats for the elderly.

The latest one is model building kits. Buy now, first issue is £1.99, then £8.99 per issue ….. But the models of famous ships or complex robots or classic cars are made up of sometimes 120 parts. So that’s 120 issues of the magazine that comes with it. If you do the maths that’s around 4 years of magazines and parts and over £1071 in costs!

I can imagine someone who loves model boats or trains might start doing one of these. But will they continue making it? Can they afford it? I do think it’s a bit of a rip off…..

Winter trees

Branches and limbs thinning and curving

Straggling twigs like fly away hair.

Skeletal, swooping and sweeping

Black trunk against white clouds.

Old birds nest up high

A roost for a crow?

Like an old venous or arterial system

Your juices are not flowing now

Sclerotic and tired

Can you be rejuvenated

Will your sap rise again?

Are buds hidden,

Waiting to burst-

Stay a while and see

Wait out the winter

Then explode like a firework blooming in light.

The boatband

DSC_1500

After the panto we went over to the local alehouse where the boatband were playing. They play a mix of sea shanties, cajun and creole music together with other 20th century music. Listening to them playing guitar, fiddle, trombone, accordion and washboard was great. One of their members is missing but I only took one photo before my phone went flat. There is always a request to sing during the interval so I sang “molly malone”, but because I had got really tired from the panto performance I could not remember all the words and had to be prompted… How Ironic…!

Anyway that was a long evening. Not sure when I will get up in the morning. The panto continues on Friday (today) and Saturday.

Waiting to go on…

After 3 or more months of rehearsal it’s the first night of the panto at penkhull . Robin Hood is going to run round in a flap with  his merry men. Prince John, the sheriff of penkhull and the goons are taxing and harassing people. The villagers are assisting  Robin in his attempts to be macho.

I’m nervous. I need to hide!

I hope not to break a real leg! See you on the other side… DSC_1495

Books

IMG_20190221_163444

What are your favourite books?

I’ve visited people and they had none, I didn’t like to ask, occasionally there would be a tabloid newspaper but that was about it. Sometimes people would have a few romance novels, or old classic ones by Dickens or Stevenson which they probably inhereted from an older relative or were prizes from school.

I was talking about this with my partner because we are both avid readers. I know my mother collected abridged versions of books from a book club run by readers digest and she also had a subscription to their monthly booklet. I remember reading books by Hammond Innes and Alistair McLean as I became a teenager. I was also seriously interested in science fiction and particularly liked Arthur C Clarke and Issac Asimov. The three laws of robotics.

In my adult life I fell in love with Terry Pratchett who wrote fantasy fiction. That was probably because my partner introduced me to JRR Tolkien and Ursula LeGuin. I’m also interested in science, art, biography physics and science fiction. So we ended up having over a thousand books if you count all his books about trains, bikes and tractors. Sometimes I just look at all the shelves and wonder where they came from……

Doodles

After I posted about the wind I decided to play with drawing the eye in it on an app called sketcher free. But what could it be? Then I thought fish eye, and fish eye lens.

Rather surreal but fun don’t you think? I used various pen shapes and sizes and colours to draw it including the ribbon pen and an eraser. Then I used the chrome pen on a medium setting.

I do love playing.

Blow the wind

I love the illustrations of little cherubs , cheeks puffed out, blowing ships across maps or in ancient paintings. That was the inspiration for this digital drawing in ArtRage oils. I had the metallic option set to 100%. You have a choice of 4 paint brushes and a sliding scale from 1 to 100.

I also love the song “blow the wind southerly” I think this would make an interesting illustration for it.

This is a free app I downloaded a couple of years ago. I have deleted other apps, but I kept this one because I like using it so much. I think it’s in Google app store or Google play if you look… I’m never quite sure how to find things there though.
