Thunderstorm overhead

My hanging baskets are getting well watered. I took a video but you can’t really see the rain well. I looked up the storms on blitzortung.org which is a free thunder and lightening monitoring service covering the whole world. There is a line of thunderstorms heading up from the south from the Welsh border to around Derby passing over Stoke-on-Trent and rumbling north.

The closest lightning was about 2 seconds between flash and boom. That’s about a mile away as there is a time delay due to the speed of light being so much faster than the speed of sound. The last combination was about 12 seconds… 2 seconds equals a mile distance, 12 is therefore 6 miles. It’s going North.

One thing I’ve noticed is the rolling boom of thunder seems to last a lot longer these days. Starting soft before reaching a crescendo then gradually fading. There must be so much energy up there! And it’s just stopped raining… And the birds have started singing again…

Tired again!

Hot day, hot even in the shade. And as we rehearsed in costume it felt hotter still…..

“Hello everyone, let’s get straight to it shall we…..” I’m narrating and I start the show. I only have a few lines but I ended up reading from the script because I just couldn’t keep the jumbled words in my head.

When I finally got home I had a hot cup of tea, ond then an ice cream! Weird combination but I just needed rehydration.

Two quiet days and now I’m exhausted again. I need shopping but I’m waiting for it to cool down. The weather app says 30°C likely tomorrow. Long term weather forecast is for 20°C and sunny with a light breeze next Saturday on Mystery day. Wish us luck.

Keeping the bed warm

One of my cats, last night he was keeping the bed warm for me, no thanks. 27°C in the day and not much cooler last night. I think he was rather warm too. As soon as I sat on the bed he was off. He’s not a teddy bear sort of cat.

The cats are all over the place in this weather, they disappear in the day, only to come in for fresh water and the occasional meal. But they seem happy. I’m hoping for some rain soon.

Meanwhile I have decided to have another quiet day. Sitting in a darkened room, I’m shattered by tiredness and the heat.

Drought?

Oh for some rain, but today came the news that there is an amber heat warning for parts of Britain. That means there is some danger to health for people, especially for the  vulnerable ones. There might be a cooler week next week, but that doesn’t mean rain.

In other news we had reports that we can expect temperatures of up to 40°Celcius in future years, that’s a lot higher than we are used to. Britain has a maritime weather system, meaning weather coming from all directions and all sorts of types. Rain, wind, sleet, hail, snow, sun, fog, mist, drizzle, gales, thunder and even tornadoes and water spouts, we get it all!

We need rain….

Rain clouds

What I suspected is true. Parts of the United Kingdom have had their driest March   in 60 years. I even went out and watered my plant pots today as my daffodils are starting to wilt.

My Cherry and Pear trees still have tightly furled buds and are not showing any sign of opening, their blossoms held in stasis until the rain swells the plant cells to make them pop open.

March is usually wet and windy for at least part of the month. But not this year, the clouds lifted and blue skies sparkled. I guess the farmers are starting to panic now. It was so warm today I left my coat off and wore a tee shirt.

Anemometer

My Anemometer is spinning round

Twirling and twisting…

Maybe March winds have arrived?

The old saying goes

March is either in like a Lion and out Like a Lamb

Or vice versa…..

Today was gusty as a growling lion

Soon it’s paws might carry it

Across the land

Howling and Roaring.

Then gentle showers of April

Will come again…

Hello Spring.

Warm Arctic?

I just read a post from a flat earther on a flat earth page asking why people can stand outside in the sunshine with just a tee shirt or hoodie on? I tried to answer.

Arctic and Antarctic summers happen at opposite ends of the year. In the North it’s around June/July and in the South it’s December /January. In the summers the temperature can rise well above zero, because in the summer months the sun doesn’t set (in the winter months it stays dark for several weeks), hence, yes people can wear hoodies and tee shirts. It’s getting warmer because of global warming and it means sea ice takes longer to form. In addition the temperature rises at the poles are happening more strongly than at other parts of the globe.

I hope this makes sense.
