I just had to find circles to draw for today’s Stoke on Trent urban sketchers challenge. I hope ellipses count as tipped up circles. In that case there are rings, a mug, a dream catcher and a mobile in this sketch… If not I guess the dream catcher and mobile in the window count. Black ink on cartridge paper. Next drawing due Sunday I think….

a teapot
a jug?
If you look under your plate.
you may find a mark
light or dark.
Pottery thrown
Or molded?
An indented word
or a print of a symbol
so whatever you think,
you can see
who made your sink
your teacup
on the table
underneath?
A label.
A backstamp
to tell you who
made it.
Says it all really, I went to bed, then got up five times, tried to sleep, now it’s catching up with me.
So many things were going on in my mind but I couldn’t shake them off.
Day 12 of the 1″ drawing challenge so I’m a good third of the way through it. Only 19 days to go.

It’s your choice.
This is an old mug from several years ago, but it’s special. Why? The little boy tackling the puppet Goliath just turned 21. For a community group that’s pretty good going. I think next year will be our 15th year and 14th production.
So when I saw it was “David’s” birthday today I just had to fish it out of the cupboard and post the photo on line. Apologies for any copyright infringement but I’ve kept the mug for about 13 years and I wanted to share with him.

For years I have drawn a little cat in a hat, useful if you want to talk to someone and they have a fidgety child. I would ask if they would like me to draw them a cat, and then draw this motif, with a pointy hat, and a name tag on its collar so the child could choose the cats name.
I also like decorating pottery so took the opportunity to do so at Trentham Retail village. This is on the A34 near Trentham village, a couple of miles South of Stoke-on-Trent, near the Stoke South junction of the M6 motorway.
There is a shop there selling pottery called the Potters Barn. They have glazes and blank pottery so you can decorate pots yourself. I know it’s usually for children, but I don’t see why adults can’t do it too.
Anyway I painted two cats, so you will see one or the other depending on which hand you hold the mug in. There are various things to paint so I chose a large mug. It cost me £15, but when you think that’s including the firing of the mug, it’s no too bad.
The final result should be bright and cheerful. I added numerous flowers in the background and dots on the rim. I should get it back I a couple of weeks.
