Those of you who follow my blog know I’ve been drawing my surroundings from the safety of my own home.

Today’s challenge was gardening. I chose to draw some pots and a flower bed in a sparkly amathyst colour brush pen. It includes cyclamen, tete-a-tete narcissi and foliage from geraniums and poppy plants. The sun was shining again today, but there was a bitterly cold wind, not helped by the neighbours behind us that had cut down two trees that had acted as a windbreak.

The second drawing is a quick sketch of the stray cat, Woody, who is doing fine sleeping in the shed and roaming the garden by day.

I’m in a group called Etruria Artists that was meeting on a Thursday, but we can’t at the moment. I’m hoping we can do something to keep it going.. Maybe we could draw or paint something, weekly or daily. Spend a couple of hours on a Thursday? I was thinking the art could be bright and colourful. Each of the members would suggest something and then make a list. Post on Facebook so the other artists can see it
My first suggestion is fish….which is why there is a picture of one here.
Could be illustration, fantasy, pattern….. X

Seeing Saturn

Digital sketch…

Years ago I had the pleasure of using a low powered telescope. I managed to find Juiter and then further away in the darkness was Saturn. It was amazing, the Rings were tipped up so they were much more visible than when they are in the a more horizontal plain. It was tiny, so small, but I could see it wavering slightly in the night air. I think Galileo thought it looked like it had ears?

To see planets with your own eyes, however small they appear is wonderful. The time it takes for the light to get to us means you scan look into the past. So it’s almost like time travel too!

If you ever get the chance, look up and see the sky….

I did the first drawing on Monday, a simple cat sketch, I coloured it with felt tip pens, but the ink bled through the paper, so I got a reversed image on the back of the page.

I decided to experiment and added some bright colours with pencil crayons . Then I got a black ink pen and outlined the gradations of colours in the drawing. Made it interesting…. Its something I’ve done before in paintings, I enjoyed doing it. X

If you can’t see what it is, I drew bacon about to be grilled, so I could make bacon and cheese oatcakes.

Today’s USK S-O-T challenge was to draw ‘cooking’. Various pots and pans and foodstuffs have been drawn. It’s keeping me occupied and mentally active.

USK stands for Urban Sketchers, its a world wide movement of people who draw their environment. The rules are, draw from life, not a photo, include background, not just the subject on its own. There are others but I can’t remember them all…. Anyway, I wonder what tomorrows challenge will be. X

Did a sketch of two new plants in the kitchen, my hubby bought them today. Are they essential? No, but gardening helps his mental health, so to him they are.

Is it DIY? That was the challenge, well I guess it’s the closest thing to DIY that’s happening here.

The green splatter of ink was put on first to give a bit of interest and help filling in the area of greenery.

Not sure if I got the perspective right. The plants are about the right scale.

What are they? A Kumquat and a Plum tree. I’m not sure if the Kumquat is edible. Does anyone know? I think it’s just decorative.

Urban Sketchers Stoke-on-Trent is a group of local people interested in drawing and sketching. The drawings should be a general view, so if you draw something you need to include it’s surroundings. Sketches are from life, not photos, and we try and be accurate as much as we can.

The challenge is based on the one urban sketchers in London is running. It runs for thirty days, and lots of people are getting involved.

Today’s challenge was ‘Entertainment’,

I could have drawn the TV or a computer or phone screen, but I just love the way the cat stares out of the window at the birds, he can’t go out, so he likes watching them. Yesterday a couple of pigeons were perched in the cherry tree. Sometimes when he’s washing he’s really comical because he sits on top of our bird food box, he only just fits. The windowledge is too full of houseplants. He likes eating some of them. This is his spot, he entertains me.

Today’s urban sketchers Stoke-on-Trent challenge was to draw the book you are reading. This is one my husband gave me it to read. Wireless for beginners by Thomas Roddam. It’s strange but I like trying to understand technical books. I read just about anything, although these days I skim read and you need to take your time over things like this. Obviously I’m never going to make vaccum tubes…

I’m enjoying the challenge. Some of it’s difficult, you think ‘what can I do?’ , but you can put your own spin on it.

So is this by you?

Yes it’s an old drawing.

When did you draw it?

I don’t really remember, I think it’s over twenty five years oldy, but as I didn’t sign or date it I can’t be sure.

Where did it come from?

I was doing some spring cleaning and chucking out old letters and envelopes. I found it in a dusty file.

Why did you draw it?

I think it was when we used to go to kite festivals, which is why I think it’s from the 1990’s although it might be older. I remember being interested in the images on kites, like Chinese or Japanese art. The pose is vaguely based on a tiger I think.

Do you like it?

Mostly, not sure about the ball of wool. But I like the way the cat is twisting in mid air.

So what have you learned?

I might vary the thickness of the lines, I was doing it to add weight and shadow to the drawing. It’s an ink drawing on cartridge paper.

So why did you interview yourself?

I wanted to make my blog a bit more interesting.

Urban Sketchers Stoke-on-Trent is doing a thirty day challenge. Today is day three and the challenge is ‘household chore’ this is my sweeping brush as my hoover is bust.

In other thoughts I’m trying to think of things to do. So far I’ve got as far as spending half the day looking at social media. I think a lot of people will be suffering from vitamin D deficiency and will look like they have recently been in prison!

Anyway, back to my chores…
