Somedays life catches up with you.

sketch-1558632048186

Imagine, you have been ill for days, you feel awful, you’ve got a meeting to sort out an exhibition…..

Open your front door to go to your car and see a sticky, stripy envelope stuck to your windscreen…

Shock? Horror? What’s this?

My residents parking pass expired last week and I hadn’t realised. What to do? Can’t park there without a valid pass. So took myself up the office in a panic and full of cold and coughs.

Right. I could challenge it, fill a form in. I explained I had not had a renewal letter. The young man behind the desk said there had been a computer error?! Letters were not sent. I should have looked at my windscreen.

(DO YOU LOOK AT YOUR WINDSCREEN EVERY TIME YOU GET IN YOUR CAR?)

Plus I have been really ill so I hadn’t thought about it….

We will see what happens…..

Rose

DSC_1980

I saw this in a cafe this morning and took a photo of it. More pink than red, in full bloom, beautiful. A classic rose shape, a whorl of petals and a swirl of colour. I like the way the petals fold back giving their edges a more angular look. The green leaf attached to it is pure green and adds a contrast in colour.

I wouldn’t say it was a brilliant photo, the background is over exposed, as is the rose slightly. It’s not fully in focus, but I like it anyway.

Started him

DSC_1979

Yes I’m painting my husband as a green man. This is about two hours in. I’m limiting the pallette to only greens white and dark grey. I think I’m getting a reasonable likeness to him although his nose may be a little long and his face is a bit narrow. The cheeky eyes staring out make me want to laugh, so often he’s serious, he’s got a lot on his mind. Also I rarely paint faces on this scale, it’s quite a big canvas so any mistakes are magnified. As you can see I have not sketched this out except initially in a darker green. I’m adjusting positions of his features as I go along. However I’ve stopped for a rest and to charge my phone as it is going flat and I’m holding the phone to work from. Modern day painting eh? And yes his nose needs to be bigger.

My new washing up sponge.

DSC_2000

Cats are heat seeking, so when I put some of the washing up away, well he jumped up and sat in the warm patch of sunlight!

I’m considering using him as a dish mop or tea towel. I’m surprised he hasn’t jumped into my frying pan.

At one stage he had his head down and started purring loudly. Don’t worry I washed it all again afterwards. The space is now full of draining crockery and I’ve cleared a space for him away from here.

Tiger Lily

DSC_1997

I’ve decided not to do any more on this, called Tiger Lily. It’s just a bit of fun, something different, a cross between a green man and a cat. I could do more. I think the colours are probably too confused. I could keep messing with it but I’m busy trying to finish other paintings as well, like my poppy painting….

I seem to be using a lot of cadmium red at the moment! The contrasting green is pthalo green which is such a deep emerald colour.

Onwards and upwards hopefully.

Based on a tile

FB_IMG_1558221491692

This is a digital drawing based on an old tile. I won’t bore you with the app I used it’s on my tablet and I haven’t been able to use it for a while as it needs fixing.

I drew it in 2016 and I don’t think I’ve shared it here before. It just popped up on my Facebook memories, and why not share it? It will just disappear into the aether again if I don’t.

I did try and create a glossy shine on it, but the chin is too big!

Ouch

sketch-1558155448755

It took me 24 minutes to draw this and you won’t know what it represents unless I tell you.

Four days ago I was cutting back blackberry stems that grow through our fence from next doors garden. We pick the fruit but the stems have a tenancy to grow sharp thorns which I sometimes get caught on when I’m tending my plants.

Anyway I didn’t bother with gloves because a) I couldn’t find any, b) it was only a small task.

Ouch! I got thorns in my fingers. I pulled them out quickly, but I could feel a sharp pain in my right index finger. But I could not see the thorn.

Hoping it would work its way out I ignored it. But the next day I still felt a sharp pain.

I prodded it but no sign of the thorn and nothing came out. Finally this morning my index finger felt really sore. What to do. No choice. I got a needle and found the thorn. It was tiny about a millimeter long, but it had gone straight down into my finger instead of along parallel to the skin surface. It is amazing how painful a thorn can be.

Anyway after about half an hour of gently sticking the needle in my finger (ouch) I managed to work it free. Got some salt water and washing up liquid to cleanse the area. Hopefully that’s it. But Ouch! Not a nice way to start your morning!

Remember, the witch has bright green eyes…

sketch-1558015815990it was late when she arrived. The rain had been pelting down all day, flooding the lanes. The car had struggled through the murk. But the hotel looked warm and inviting. She signed in and opted for a quick visit to the bar.

Soon she was chatting with the hotel owner. He told her how quirky it was. Wait till you see it in daylight. He said. It’s got a lovely feeling to it, ancient yet beautiful. She smiled as she chatted. Just what she needed, a quiet scenic stay in a plush hotel. Pampering and relaxing.

It’s  a few hundred years old, he told her. Some parts are ancient. You can see the timbers. Old oak beams, even some wattle and daub in the older parts.

That’s great, really interesting. I bet you could tell some tales? She only asked with the expectation of some story for the tourist trade.

The hotel owner smiled. Well there is one story about the witch, he said. Oh, not a ghost? She replied.

No, it happened in the room next to where you are tonight. An old woman, they decided she was a witch simply because she had bright green eyes. The story goes they didn’t want to hang her so they walled her up in a cupboard in the wall. We’ve never seen anything, he reassured her. Just one of those spooky stories you get in old buildings.

Still, she felt a little nervous on the way up to her bedroom. The lighting was very low, making every shadow ghostly puddles of blackness. I can’t wait for morning, she thought.

Up two flights of stairs, the porter showed her into the bedroom. It was en suite with a four poster bed! Satin drapes to keep the damp breeze out. A tray full of goodies and proper coffee. The bathroom had a roll top bath, gold taps, luxurious. Soon she was feeling relaxed and calm. She drank a gin and tonic and read her book for a little while.

She decided to turn in about midnight, with the drapes round the bed pulled tight it was too dark so she put the side table light on and settled down.

She was very tired and soon fell asleep. She was only a light sleeper and something woke her.

A hand was pulling the drapes aside, a face appeared at the bottom of the bed. Two bright green, glowing eyes stared at her.

Owl

I started a new painting last night. It began as a spiral, but then I found a photo of a great grey owl so it’s morphed. I’m quite happy with it as it is as a sketch, but I will finish it. I’ve got a few half finished paintings but I haven’t had the energy to do them over the last few days. Anyway the background is going to be of acer leaves, the ones that look like fingers, because I want to give it a feel of autumn.

Might do a bit more today. I usually do a lot of things on a Thursday but I’m not up to it._20190516_205231
