Orme Art group and Spode studios Open Days.

This is what I’m working towards at the moment. I’m really looking forward to it. We will have some space on a wall in the Brampton museum and art gallery. I’ve got a tryptich of Jupiter ready and I’m doing a painting of Mars. Then on the 7th and 8th of September I’ve got a painting at Spode during our Open Studios weekend.

I will also be exhibiting art at The Orme Group Christmas Exhibition, dates and details to follow. Today I’ve also had confirmation that I can put more paintings in an exhibition at the Brampton in November to December for Christmas. I’m just waiting for a poster for that. All I need now is to see if people like them and get some commissions.

Persius and Medusa

DSC_0343

On a lighter note this statue of Persius and Medusa is at Trentham Gardens, Trentham, Staffordshire. The statue is inside the gardens next to the lake which means you have to pay to go in. I’m sure there is information about it but this is a photo from last year. I haven’t been in the gardens for months and probably with the heavy rain we’ve been having the plants there might be a bit battered but they are usually very beautiful.

I’m going to try and finish my painting of mars that I shared a couple of days ago to get in our Orme art exhibition at the Brampton in Newcastle-under-Lyme and try and go back to Trentham again on Friday.

Shattering

IMG_20190825_190853_770

Pixels and glass, an old disco ball changed by using Layout app and adjusting the sharpness, colours and contrast.

Splashing subtle colours around the room, coloured washes staining the walls if the sun glints on it. I know disco balls are not the thing to have in a living room, but it cheers me up. As the sun sets behind the house the light gradually creeps in. First it catches the glass crystals I have in the window and they send rainbow shards through the room. Jittering and twisting across the magnolia plaster. Then the sun drops lower and the disco balls individual glass facets glitter and flicker.

It was from this that I made this image.

Gloves

DSC_2183_optimized

Workman’s gloves, these have been tucked behind this pipe for over a year. Like a pink octopus hiding in a crevice in the rock. I imagine the workman or woman who was using them. Did their contract end and they just pushed them behind the pipe thinking they woukd be back in the morning. I can see them being put there then gradually getting soaked over the years. Spiders and slugs colonising them. Each month the sun bleaches them more. Did they start out as red? Were they comfortable or too big or small? I don’t know. They are an enigma.

Been to the studio.

I’ve been back to my studio after a couple of months being too busy and hot to go there. This is my Jupiter tryptich which might be on show in the Brampton museum and art gallery soon, as part of the Orme Group of Artists exhibition.

Art and astronomy seem to be getting under my skin. I have tried to accurately depict the planet Jupiter, but  I don’t use airbrushing so everything is hand painted with various sizes of brushes.

It’s not perfect, I can see where I’ve gone wrong, but the whole point is that these are paintings, and I love patterns so trying to depict the fluid dynamics of Jupiter’s atmosphere is a real challenge.

I like the idea of having a tryptich. It can be hung vertically or horizontally, or as in this case on the diagonal. I also like using the floor at Spode. I think it makes a great background.

Little giraffes

_20190822_022803they still need a bit more work. I was painting till 4am. There are things wrong with them, I think the heads are too small slightly, but when you are painting on a matchbox sized canvas it’s hard to get things quite right. A couple of tiny brush strokes and it’s wrong and you have to start again. I left these early this morning as I wanted to see them in daylight. One thing I did notice is the moon on the blue one. I’ve got it curved the wrong way. The light is from the left so the curve needs to be in that direction. I’m also thinking of adding a few specks of white to another one to indicate stars. The one with the yellow sun might have some vegetation added.

Even though they are tiny I treat them like full size paintings. I doubt if it’s cost effective but it’s fun!

Leopard mural

In 1842 there was a Chartists riot in Burslem which is the mother town of Stoke-on-Trent. During a meeting of Chartists in the town the magistrate decided to read the riot act and the police and military shot a rioter called Josiah Heapy while they were trying to quell it.

I did this painting at least ten years ago and recently it appeared in the local press to illustrate the root. I wrote to the paper giving them retrospective permission to use it, but now it’s on other Facebook pages. When I informed one page they took it down. I don’t mind it being used but I did it and several others and would like some recognition. Some people speculated that I copied it from prints from the time. But actually I researched it. Look closely and you will see faces of customers, staff and the owners of the hotel. I used old prints to get the buildings right in the background. Things have changed since then including a victorian town hall which was built later. The police and mounted regiment are in uniforms that I had to guess. I tried getting the information but could not find it out in time.

Finished

_20190818_235842_20190818_235745

Took all day but I finally finished this. Spent a lot of time painting the old, flaking window frame. I’m not sure the sky colour is right. I might get up early and tone it down. I’m handing it in in the morning….

It’s called Spode Reflected.

Who is he?

DSC_2227_optimized (2)

There are some windows in Spode covered in various circular prints. This one looks like a photographic negative and appears to be someone famous although I don’t know who.

There are other patterns overlaid. This must have been a particular place for some sort of work within the factory but I’m not sure what?
