Courtney Pine is a jazz saxophonist famous for his amazing music. He has a form of synesthesia and sees shapes in his music. I was watching #skyportraitartistoftheyear and decided to try and draw Courtney Pine from an Internet image. I had fun, this took about 1hr…colour pencil sketch, underdrawn with a 9h pencil that scratched through lines into the paper surface…

Today’s #bandofsketchers prompt was local landmark. We had a walk round the main Hanley Park and also the small park which had this fountain in. The last time I saw it, it was frozen! But tomorrow is the first day of spring, and it was a pleasant and sunny afternoon. Here is my pencil and felt pen depiction of the fountain.

Quick watercolour and ink pen sketch of the sunset on my walk today. It took me 3. 5 hours to walk 6.73 miles, but that was including stops and visits to shops. I’m haven’t blogged much today.. Too tired…
I was trying to think what this pattern reminded me of? I think it is similar to a parrot. The curve at the top right could be a bill. The oval feature on the left could be where the eye goes? Pareidolia, the phenomenon of seeing faces and animals where they are not actually represented. I might try and play with it….

This was originally created in my old phone photo app….

Stairs or stairway. This is the top of our stairs with a bookcase full of books and old photo albums. Quick 15 minute sketch for today’s #bandofsketchers prompt. Calligraphy Ink pen and marker pens (some are running out).

There is a prompt set by Esther Chilton to write a limerick using a particular word. This week it was Mop, which was good because I’d just drawn Mow Cop at Five am this morning.
Mow Cop is a folly of a castle near Kidsgrove, Staffordshire, and stands above the Cheshire plain with views of Jodrell Bank Observatory and beyond.

Probably my final version of a landscape imagined from a set I made in a box. There are two previous ones. This time the figures are further forward and one couple have been switched round, the Dalek and the Alien Goat are differentiated by colours. The Buddha has become more of a geological outcrop in the landscape and the boat has less detail. Finally it is set at night..

based on my first ‘set’ drawing, this has changed into more of a landscape. Playing with sci-fi characters. I think I’m going slightly mad. I’m reading the brief and I’m supposed to draw again based on this…. I’m not sure what I will do next.

I do like contour lines, and this little doodle reminded me of wood cut through like when you cut down a tree. You can date the tree by its tree rings (dendrochronology) . I started out doodling round some pink and blue dots that had leaked through the page from a permanent marker pen, and then spread out and out, trying not to overlap the lines. This is like a meditation to me, as the pattern gets larger its more difficult to draw tidy curves and keep the line seperation. This took hours and i really had to concentrate. I’m sure it could be done with a digital platform but this is a fine liner ink pen.
