Reds

Something about red cheers me up, going bright red, seeing a red sky, the glowing coals on a fire. The cherry red of a poker?

Red seems to signify heat and health, richness and cheerfulness. Go further along the spectrum and you get to infrared and far infrared. These colours outside of the visible spectrum can still be seen with infrared cameras, where you can then see the heat signature of objects like the heat radiating from windows and hot mugs.

Red is also the colour of life and blood. Of holding your hands up to bright light and seeing the red colour as it shines through your flesh. Red is love and hearts 💕

Shepherds warning?

The sky was on fire a few minutes ago. Such a bright red, as if the clouds were on fire. Now its faded to a pale orange. I know its just the reflection of the sun’s rays below the horizon hitting the base of a layer of clouds but it was spectacular.

I don’t think my phone gives it a true sense of how bright and gorgeous it was but it captured it better than my old one would have. I guess it must have a more sophisticated apature control. On my old phone the red would just have appeared over exposed.

Reddish

Red leaves sprawl on the ground. Reddish brown flights of fancy.

Reddish butterflies spin and whirl. Red and yellow stir the air.

Rubera and Ochre and verdant green. Colours of Autumn shape the world. Russet fingers fling outwards.

Brown’s burn to red, fire and gold. Blackened and rotting as cold and rain dampen their crisp outlines.

Give back to the soil, returning to earth. Wilderness and suburbs mashed together, following the floating leaves down stream to the sea.

Life renews, water falls, tree branches lie dormant until warmth returns to rebuild their leaves from the air we breathe.

Horses

Digital red horse…

When I was a child I was fascinated in trying to draw horses and horses heads. At one stage I drew a lovely picture of a dappled grey horse in pencil when I was about 9. I sold  it for sixpence! I just remembered it after all these years after doing this digital drawing of a horse. It’s red because the original drawing in ArtRage oils was a flower, then a poppy, then a heart and now a horse.

Here are two of the previous drawings. I can’t find the heart, but I think that might be on my phone. I seem to be saving things in two places so it depends which I use to create the art.

What I’m getting at is the fun to be had by morphing one drawing into another,  covering your tracks, but being influenced by colour and shape.

Back to horses. I always seem to draw them in profile, and facing to the left. I also seem to do the same thing with profiles of faces, but when I draw people in 3/4 (half way between profile and straight on) the faces are turned slightly to the right. I tried to discuss this with a friend who also drew profiles. She always did faces looking right in profile. I wondered if it depends on if you are right or left handed. She was left handed and drew opposite to me.

One of my main struggles with horse drawings I that I’m not good at their mouths and also their eyes. I don’t use a photo to copy from when I’m drawing them. I try and use my memory.

So there you are, not much about real horses  except obviously I love them.

Robin

We saw a Robin at a garden centre yesterday. He was flitting through the plants and as I walked towards him he would move on. Then it got to the end of the row and just sat there so I quickly snapped a couple of pictures of it.

His (or her) red breast shone out against the dull brown of the dormant plants

I thought I would try and write a simple haiku to celebrate the bird…..

Red Robin here then
Gone with a quick flit of air
Wings take you away

I’m not sure I have mastered the style yet. But I enjoy trying.

Fly Agaric

It was early this morning when we saw this Fly Agaric mushroom in the hotel grounds. There was the bright red cap with its white spots, and something had been nibbling it! I know these fungi are not safe to eat, poisonous I think.

The colours are pretty accurate. The sun was shining from a quite low angle so the red is a bit burnt out.

This is one of the most amazing fungi I have ever seen.

Ripe cherries

I thought we had eaten all the cherries off out two cherry trees, but Richard went out on some step ladders and a broom today and managed to pull down a couple of branches. He came back  with about a third of a bowl of the ripest and darkest cherries we have ever had off the trees.

I was surprised, basically because we leave the top half of the trees to the blackbirds.  Every year they eat their fill of them. But its such a pleasure to have the fruit that I don’t begrudge the birds any of them.

At the same time our pear tree is gradually filling with fruits, they are quite well hidden because they are not very big yet. Our pears are the same colour as the foliage so they just don’t show up much against the leaves, where the cherries seem to glow with their internal fire of red.

Small apples are also growing slowly. The weather is hot and dry and the apples are not swelling up much. I’m not sure what sort of crop we will get. Last year all but one of the apples fell off in June so at least we are doing better than that.

We got all the fruit trees from our local Woolworths store. That was a few years ago before the firm went out of business. They were a good bargain.

What did I do with the cherries? Washed and stoned them, then had them with a small amount of vanilla icecream. Delicious and cool. Tasty.

In my friends garden

I took these photos in a friend’s garden 6 years ago (they came up on my Facebook feed) I am a nut about colour and some of these just zing!

I think I used a little digital camera with no added features to take these. I was just amazed how the reds and oranges stood out in the green.

I wish I could time travel back to those simpler times. But time flies, tempus fugit, and before you know it you are 6 years older and perhaps not wiser!

But in the meantime I’m going to enjoy browsing through these again…

Cheers x

Red

Red is bold!

Untitled1_001

Red blood, red heart

Red lips, red nose,

Red wine, red hat,

Red berries, red shoes…

I saw you smile, your mouth so neat,

Red cherries dripped their liquor sweet.

Red is the colour of anger and heat,

Red hot poker, flower, meat.

Red is gaudy, little red hood,

Red for strawberries, red for bud.

Red for roses, red says stop,

Red for danger, red for what?

I dont know what else to write,  I can think of names for red, like carmine and crimson, vermilion and scarlet, close to red are mauve and magenta. I found it difficult to write something that makes much sense I’m afraid. But at least I tried. ..
