Canal walk

Today we walked from the carpark of the Toby Carvery at Festival Park, Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent to Hanley Park and back. The walk was only about three and a half miles but it was quite humid and I’d already been gardening in the morning.

We saw some Geese and Goslings jump off a wall on the other side of the canal, they swam over to us as I think they were looking for food. Sadly we had nothing for them.

Hanley Park was looking lovely with purple and white flowers in the beds up by the pavilion. They must have spent a lot of money on them.f

Finally we walked back to the Carvery. That was a bit difficult. We had taken a seat outside. But we had to order drinks in the bar, which meant sitting in the bar and having our orders taken, then we could take them outside. When I wanted a bag of crisps I had to go and sit again and wait for them to come and take my order. It was OK but a little strange.t

Then home to more gardening.

Walking with geese

Seeing their goslings,

Round Westport lake

And various puddles.

Soft and fluffy

Yellow and brown.

Fuzzy and pretty

Not like their parents.

When do they transform?

When they grow full feathers

Then full plumage appears

Smart black necks

Brown and white patches.

Growing up quickly

Proud parents delight.

Looking at each other, staring each other out, which will be quickest to peck? Ramming speed… In the canal, under the eaves of the old pottery.

By mirroring the image of the goose I hoped to create a humorous image, and the title just jumped into my mind….

On Westport lake yesterday. The water was as still as a millpond one minute, then blustery gusts of wind rippled the surface and blurred the reflections.

Seeing a row of geese standing on one leg was an amusing picture. The water was very shallow at the edge, but these are old pit workings I think and there are deep sections. People have drowned in them two lakes, caught up in the weeds that spread inwards from the sides. This is more of a nature reserve than a leasure area and now it is being run by Staffordshire Wildlife Trust you can see how much it has improved. The one fly in the ointment is that the local council is thinking of introducing parking charges. There is a petition against this. A lot of people using the site don’t have the means to pay high prices, and it would probably impact on the cafe when it reopens.. I signed the petition against it…

There was ice on Westport lakes and ducks were standing round on it while the geese and swans swam in the open water. The light was glancing across the surface as it headed down towards sunset. There was scattered cloud that gave the scene light and shade. All in all very picturesque for a short cold walk round the lakes.

We took grain and fed a lot of the birds, we were mobbed by them all clamouring for something to eat. A lot of other people had the same idea. Hubby and I were wearing masks, but we saw very few others wearing them, and there were groups of up to about ten people!

I enjoyed the walk, not really very far, but slippy underfoot. Pleased with my camera phone photos too.

Longing for a walk round the cold lake, away from people, stretching my legs, getting exercise again after a month if tonsillitis. I’ve got to escape, get out, get away from crowded stores.

Fresh air, beautiful sky’s and landscapes. Snow White swans, warm down covering them, to survive the winter. Out to feed them, and the geese. That’s what I want to do. Soon…

A memory of a walk round Westport Lake last year. The geese were very keen to be fed. We were gradually increasing the lengths of our walks. Then I started going for walks with a friend. I miss them. About three weeks ago I got tonsillitis and its knocked me for six. I’m getting better but still very achy. Why does that happen?I think I will be OK but I don’t want to catch anything else! Sunny warm days… Come back soon.

I’m glad I went for this walk a couple of weeks ago. Blue sky reflected in the water, one goose partly hidden behind a post. The water was gently rippled by a cold breeze. The geese were preening themselves.

It’s a random image, but it feels calm.

I will try and find some more images of the world, just to remind me……

A cold sunny day until the breeze blew clouds across the landscape. Ducks, geese, pigeons, moorhens and swans looking out for food, so we got two bags full to grain to feed them. I thought we would just go round the small lake which is a quarter of a mile, but instead we did the mile walk round the large lake. We’ll it was more of a slow dawdle. My hip is not right yet after pulling a muscle, but we did extend the walk into the maze that Staffordshire wildlife Trust have made on the area of hedging at the far end of the lake. The paths were muddy and difficult to get out of when we tried to regain the main path.

When the sun went behind the clouds it made a fantastic and dramatic picture. I took numerous pictures of the birds and trees and landscape around the lake. I feel much better for the walk, though I was very chilly when we finished. I need to be able to walk much further than this, but it’s a start.

Six hours painting today, including about four standing on a set of steps. As a short and a bit wobbly person I have to be careful not to step backwards and fall over.

I am really tired now, I’ve got to go back and finish it off and varnish it next week. I might get a rest tomorrow, I’ll see how I feel.
