Gardening when I can

Describe one habit that brings you joy.

For years I have filled the back yard with hanging baskets and flowers. This year I had to get help from my sister to hang the baskets as I can’t climb ladders. Then I got plants from a wellness group I visit every week. Some of the plants were going over so I got them for a small amount of money.

I love this habit, but it has its dangers. I use a hose to water the plants as I can’t lift my watering can up. But it’s a trip hazard! I have to be very careful not to fall, luckily I have a grab handle by the back door. But sometimes things get very precarious!

He’s back!

The yard my cat was in. They clearly were trying to look after him. I’ve been round and left a note explaining he needs medication daily for the abscess under his chin. Left my number. When I checked where the yard is today I found there is a gate we could have gone through. What do people think about me going in and grabbing him if he goes there again? The other two photos are of him in his carrier while I was waiting to see the vet. He’s eating and drinking but very quiet. (last photo, asleep).

Sunlight

Sun shining through the kitchen window. My cctv camera seems to be being affected by the brightness of the low sun. All the colour is washed out. It looks like a black and white photo. You can see how overgrown it is. We really did create a wood by the side of the house. Cherry, walnut, eucalyptus, plum, apple, and other trees were planted over twenty years ago. They have grown large and healthy. It’s one way of mitigating my carbon footprint I guess.

Visiting gardens

Which activities make you lose track of time?

I can’t remember where I took this photo. I think it might have been the Trentham Gardens show gardens?

I lose track of time when I visit (which is not very often). I will try and get a friend to come with me so I can explore a bit further. It takes me a while to walk around  a garden, and I frequently take photos so that I can rest on the way round. I’m slow and not sure so handrails can come in handy. But I love seeing how gardens change with the seasons. But sometimes my progress is glacial! I keep checking my heart points on my phone. They generally stick at 0 because I’m so slow!

No cherries, no pears

Each year we have cherries and pears on our trees. The birds get most of the cherries but we get good pears, that is until  this year.

We had a lovely display of blossom. The cherry and the pear tree blossomed first. Early in spring. Lots of flowers, pink and white. But I was worried because it was cold and wet and windy and I didn’t see many insects (and we don’t seem to have had birds nesting either). A couple of weeks later the blossom had faded and petals showered the ground. Then the apple tree came into blossom. The sun shone and bees arrived. Now I have no cherries, I saw the little stalks with tiny pips all over the ground, and no discernable baby pears. It’s so sad. It’s like they have given up now hubby is gone.

My only consolation is that there are lots of apples on the tree. But it hangs over into my neighbours yard and I am worried they will cut it back, and as there is a trellis fence in the way I can’t access the fruit. Drat!

Internet back on!

Internet fixed so thought I’d post a picture of the back yard. Thanks to my sister for collecting the baskets and hanging them for me. I have filled a few pots for the wall but the understory on the ground is overgrown with perennial geraniums and Welsh poppies. I’m trying to build up a bit of colour. I have a mad variegated hosta and some lilies that hubby planted last year. Memory is a funny thing.

Bench and moss

My garden bench looks a bit worn out. There’s a hole where the wood has rotted. Now it’s growing moss. There’s a small strawberry plant in a pot, and a few empty pots which I might fill up with flowers letter on.

I’m posting about gardening, but I haven’t been out much. The rain has been pouring down all month. Less flaming June, more flipping wet June!

I took this photo today, I might buy another bench. Perhaps a metal one? In the meantime I will continue to use this as a potting bench for now.

Spring

What is your favorite season of year? Why?

Flowers open

First daffodils then tulips

Some promise of primroses

Helibores nod their head

Leaves unfurl and spread

Yellows and golds attract the bees

Their eyes subtle patterns insects see.

Guiding them to nectar

From flowers and trees.

That’s the season set to please!
