The boatband

DSC_1500

After the panto we went over to the local alehouse where the boatband were playing. They play a mix of sea shanties, cajun and creole music together with other 20th century music. Listening to them playing guitar, fiddle, trombone, accordion and washboard was great. One of their members is missing but I only took one photo before my phone went flat. There is always a request to sing during the interval so I sang “molly malone”, but because I had got really tired from the panto performance I could not remember all the words and had to be prompted… How Ironic…!

Anyway that was a long evening. Not sure when I will get up in the morning. The panto continues on Friday (today) and Saturday.

Waiting to go on…

After 3 or more months of rehearsal it’s the first night of the panto at penkhull . Robin Hood is going to run round in a flap with  his merry men. Prince John, the sheriff of penkhull and the goons are taxing and harassing people. The villagers are assisting  Robin in his attempts to be macho.

I’m nervous. I need to hide!

I hope not to break a real leg! See you on the other side… DSC_1495

Predictive text poem

IMG_20190215_154202_447

It has to be done….write  a mad poem with predictive text after starting with the words:

“This is a digital poem”…

creative business and making the evening

depending on the window ledge ,

the great Christmas angel was really interested

in speaking to the people sitting in the cold room

in the garden centre on Saturday

then panto rehearsal

this grinning cat is getting better

In future in the following year again soon,

the canal system ruining their paintwork

So what happens in the garden, the cat has escaped!

I’m just starting to block the cars in

the programme called countdown

when we first drew this

Christmas tree branches

making ordinary people pay for security guard

But it must have joined them, there are options ……?

Well that didn’t work out brilliantly,  it’s difficult to predict what words will come out next. I’ve had to take out lots of @ symbols together with ‘ – ‘ and many badly spelled words. But you have to have a laugh sometimes.

Tired

Your looking tired? she said. Busy day? Yes it was, but I didn’t want to admit it. A long drive across the moors, then a quick rest at the hotel. Now I was sitting in a quiet pub waiting for the meal I’d ordered.

The waitress spoke again. You look a bit peaky, you must look after yourself. She looked closely at me, her face expressing surprise, fear and astonishment…

You’ve gone a funny colour!

Drawing a kiss

sketch-1550321524112

How.?

Noses get in the way

Mouths don’t fit together

Where do they look?

Do they close their eyes?

This turned out closer to a little peck on the cheek than a full blown kiss. Maybe it’s a first kiss. They are looking at each other quizzically. Is this OK? What is their back story? They are not children or teens. They are about the same age, young adults. Life is ahead of them, do they have a future together.? Can they trust each other. It might have been easier to draw real people, but I don’t think two models would stand around for an hour while I drew them. The same goes for photographs, I don’t know anyone who would want to let me do that.

Trying to imagine how to draw this was interesting, it’s not something I normally do. I used a drawing app and a stylus to do this and a pencil setting on 3 and 5 pixel widths in black, grey and white.

It’s a doodle, a sketch, a bit of fun.

Drawing practice.

What’s better than challenging yourself to do something different.

If you draw something often enough you get to know its shape, whether its a drawing of a car, or a landscape, or a face.

If you want to see things more clearly when you are drawing it can be an idea to turn your picture upside down. then you can identify areas you need to adjust.

This is an extension of the idea. Draw the object upside down then turn it the right way up. It’s a way of learning. I find myself talking through what I am doing. Is the nose too long, are the eyes too close together. Just think how you would draw someone if they were standing in their head? How does the hair on their head fall? Where would the shadows be. In this case I can turn my phone round and clearly see that the face is too long, the eyes are too small and the face is too thin. But it doesn’t look as bad from the normal perspective. I think that’s because of foreshortening. Tablets and phones tend to be held horizontally where pc screens are vertical.  With phones that means the top of the image is further away from your eyes than the bottom of it. Consequently the top half may be drawn slightly bigger than it should be so that when viewed upside down you can see the distortions.

When I was a child I learned to draw by copying from cartoons and photos,  but also by drawing people from life and from memory, the old adage is right, practice makes perfect. I just need to spend the time to learn and hone my work.

Staring at me?

sketch-1550192527951

Who is that man staring at me? Why is he staring? I have never met him before. Never spoken to him. Trying to hide behind a magazine, I peeped out. . Still staring directly at me! How rude and somehow frightening too. Like when a cat stares at its prey, ready to strike? Or a snake catching your scent … Who was he? How did he know me?

Oh no, he’s coming over. Sitting down opposite me at the cafe table. .

Excuse me? You have ketchup on your face. He grabbed the napkin and wiped my face, like I was a child! Then he got up and walked away. I’ve never seen him again since!

Sliders.

Imagine a game like curling that you play with stones on ice, but on a normal floor. That’s sliders, a curling game where the stones have ball bearings underneath them to allow them to glide across the floor  You aim at a target with scores which go from 1 2 3 4 5 and 10.

Today I actually scored a 10, which is very unusual for us. Sometimes I can’t even reach the target as the bearings on the stones are starting to get worn out. We play a simple game where the highest score after an hour wins. Today there were 7 of us playing. It’s also good exercise as you are bending and stretching and walking backwards and forwards.

If you want a simple game to play at a community centre or village hall I would recommend it.

Painting again today.

I’ve just finished these two boards for the panto  They may be the last ones I do. If they are sold afterwards the proceeds will go to the Penkhull village hall although it’s not clear whether they will be kept or not. Its been hard work but great fun painting these.

Gretna Green is a Scottish village where people used to elope to get married if they did not have the permission of their parents.

The second picture is an impression of Big Ben and the houses of Parliament situated in London on the River Thames.

The idea is that the images should be clearly visible even at the back of the hall.
