Bird in snow..

Blackbird

No, it’s not snowing here, but it’s chilly and windy enough to send a shiver through any birds body. We are feeding them sunflower hearts, mixed wild bird food and mealy worms (which the Robin seems to love). I know the weather won’t improve for a few weeks, but I hope when the spring arrives we get Blue Tits nesting again. I might buy a new nest box for them as the old ones look a bit worn out. The hole they get in through was worn away by their claws as they fly in and hop out. Looking after our local wild bird population is a responsibility.

Pigeon sketch

Digital finger painting.

Done late last night, I was in a doodling mood. I completely covered another drawing I had saved but wasn’t very pleased with. Its interesting to do this because by saving changes I’m not adding a new file and I hope it means I am saving some phone memory. Yes I draw on my phone, so the tiny screen makes it hard to add details.

I think my pigeon has a bit of sass, he’s cheeky and he’s just taking off to make mischief somewhere….

Waterbird

Silhouette of a waterbird taken a couple of days ago on a walk round Westport Lake. I liked the way the small rock in the water looks like a birds head with a beak. It made me look twice because the actual birds head was looking forwards, towards me. It does give the illusion that the head is turned in profile in the reflection.

Woodpecker

This morning I saw a woodpecker in our garden. I’d never seen one in real life and I’m not sure what type it was but it was climbing up our willow tree, pecking at the bark. Looking for insects? I hope it comes back tomorrow. If it does I will try and get a photo then try and identify it. We do have lots of trees in the garden even though we are in the centre of a city. I guess we are trying to do our bit for the environment.

Heron

Seen today in Etruria

that grey thing is a Heron, or as a little child that was passing said ‘an evil heron’! It really did look prehistoric.

At Etruria on the Cauldon branch of the canal. The bird walked along the canal towpath then stood crouched at the side of the water. It was ready to spear into the canal to catch a fish. More intent on staring than wo was watching it. I was amazed to get photos of it.

Swans protecting Cygnets

We saw this family of Swans on our walk round Westport today. The Cygnets are almost adult size now and are stretching their wings and legs and are starting to change from soft down to white plumage.

As we stood and took photos several people walked past with dogs. The male Swan reacted by hissing loudly. One woman and her friends had three small dogs with them. Her friends walked swiftly by but she was panicking and wouldn’t move so I asked her to hand me the dogs lead and I held it while I stood between the Swan and her dog. The Swan just hissed but didn’t attack. She got past and I carried on with my walk. X
