Tandem Riding

My bike…. dont have a picture of our tandem….

We were out one day, and Hubby saw an old tandem across the floor of a garage. He went over to look at it and fell into an inspection pit. Luckily, he was OK!

We bought the tandem (which was two bikes welded together) and my hubby even took the local MP round Penkhull on it!

One day we rode 100 miles in a reliability trial with the local cycling club. It was fun and we got back in seven and a half hours, despite one of my pedals falling off and having to borrow a spanner to fasten it back in place. One chain wheel was on the opposite side of the tandem, so it had unscrewed….

All this happened about thirty years ago when I was a lot fitter.

We would take the tandem or our bikes out and explore the local countryside or cycle from Stoke up to Rochdale, or down to Walsall.

We decided to cycle up through Leek one day, then up to the Roaches. We saw a signpost for Flash so decided to take it (the highest village in England apparently). We were tired but swooped up and down the hills. But I was nervous, two of us going downhill on winding roads was nerve wracking! I was a bit scared and kept houting at my hubby to SLOW DOWN!

Eventually we came down and round a corner and……

We almost ran into a five pony, pony trek that was spread across the road. Hubby turned the handlebars and dropped us into a shallow ditch at the side of the road!

I admit cursing him for being so reckless. But we gathered ourselves back together and set off again uphill, then swiftly down again. I kept telling him to go slower. But he was enjoying himself and we had averted one disaster, what else could happen?

This time we came round a corner and just managed to stop, in front of a scout Jamboree. How many scouts and cubs? Goodness only knows. HUNDREDS of them! Hubby and I had been lucky not to hit one of them, like a skittle, probably knocking others over too!

Again, we got ourselves sorted out. By then I was ready to go home. We saw a TV mast somewhere up on the hills as we headed Westwards and soon, we were looking across the beautiful Cheshire plain, looking at peaceful and hopefully flat farmland to cycle home over. We stopped off at a place selling ice-cream before pedalling downhill towards Macclesfield or Congleton, to be honest I can’t remember because I was more bothered about the danger of going downhill too fast! I think I was probably very grateful that we got home in one piece!

Sunset 19 June 2024

Looking out over a supermarket car park.

The sky had clouded over, but there was a glow from the setting sun behind the grey clouds. It just shows that a minimal landscape can be enhanced by light and colour. There is blue and grey, orange and yellow, purples and blacks all intermingling and changing by the minute.

For once it wasn’t raining, it wasn’t cold, and it wasn’t windy. You could stand and watch the atmosphere evolve as the sun set. It’s not a very exciting sunset, but I enjoyed it.

Esther’s phobia prompt

OK on the ground…

Esther Chilton has a weekly prompt on her blog giving an idea to post a comment to. This week’s was PHOBIA.

Here’s my response:

My phobia is flying. I just won’t. Most of my family fly occasionally but I just can’t face it. For years my hubby wanted me to go to a local airport to see jets taking off and landing, but just seeing planes coming over a major road towards the airport was scary. The urge to duck was immense. Big metal tubes with wings, no I just can’t.
I like spiders and snakes. I’ll visit aquaria and watch sharks. I’ve been on boats and trains, I can cope in a car, mainly if I’m driving. But the thought of nothing underneath me except air… Even if there were no windows, so I couldn’t see out and know I was in the air, and if there was no turbulence. I just am too afraid!

Internet back on!

Internet fixed so thought I’d post a picture of the back yard. Thanks to my sister for collecting the baskets and hanging them for me. I have filled a few pots for the wall but the understory on the ground is overgrown with perennial geraniums and Welsh poppies. I’m trying to build up a bit of colour. I have a mad variegated hosta and some lilies that hubby planted last year. Memory is a funny thing.

Queen Elizabeth the First

Who is your favorite historical figure?

I wish I could share a picture of Queen Elizabeth 1st, but as I’ve previously explained my Internet is down.

I learnt about the Eliabethans at school, and became obsessed with their clothing. I loved trying to draw and paint the ruffs they wore round their necks and the splits the rich Eliabethans had in their clothes to show the underlying cloth.

I was interested in the history of the Queen too, not just her clothes. Her court of figures such as Sir Walter Raleigh and Sir Frances Drake. She was monarch when King Philip of Spain tried to Invade England with the Spanish Armada but was beaten by Drake if I remember correctly.

She never married and was one of the longest reigning monarchs of Britain. She was known as the Virgin Queen. Shakespeare may have written plays for her. But I don’t know the actual facts.

Slept well last night

My phone isn’t pinging and trilling as much now my Internet is down. I always take my phone upstairs incase of an emergency, but I frequently will watch a few videos before I sleep. Last night no noises, no pings. I slept well. I don’t know if it’s a real effect because I was really tired. I woke up at 7am but went back to sleep and I just woke up from a dream of someone knocking on the front door.

I’ve probably slept too much but I’m glad I got it. And because I wasn’t constantly checking my phone it made my decision to sleep so much easier. I hope the same happens tonight. Maybe you don’t realise you have 4 unless you actually put 2 and 2 together.

Crushed!

Write about your first crush.

My first crush was a boy in my Junior school. I think I was about 9?

For one year he was in my class. He was tall, I think he had dark blond hair. It was the time of the Lone Ranger on TV and he reminded me of him.

No notes were passed, no looks exchanged, but I would sit behind him in class and listen to him when he answered the questions the teacher asked us.

Time went by. I was wearing glasses by then and had to put up with being called “specky four eyes!” and nasty names because my surname wasn’t Smith or Jones. I wanted him to come to my rescue but he never did. Eventually it was the end of the year. He was put in a different class. I had to get on with life. But then I fell in love with Slade the Rock Band, or was it Starsky and Hutch? Anyway I moved on. And no I actually wasn’t crushed but it made a good title!

Can’t “like” posts

Another problem with having no Internet connection is that I can’t like ⭐ people’s posts. I think that’s because of images, they won’t download onto my phone so I just get the circle that rotates.

I will try and catch up when I get my new hub, but that’s going to take three or four working days, so it might come on Saturday or on Monday. And then it depends if I am in to take it off the postman! Wish me luck X
