Bye bye baubles

_20190103_095056

After a week of resisting temptations my cat decided to attack the Christmas tree last night. The round, glittery baubles just got too much for her. Before I knew it she was round the back of it and the whole artificial tree was shaking …. Rocking from side to side . Luckily I was next to it as it started to topple. I caught the top of it and hauled it back upright.

Now the tree is denuded of its colourful decorations, left with only a string of fairy lights and a few strips of shiny paper as a reminder that it is not twelfth night yet. I’ll put the lights on again tonight. ….

Hopefully the cat will have no reason to attack it again now the temptation has been removed….

Hiding under the tree

DSC_0749.JPG

Hiding under the tree, determined to shake the baubles free. Trying to use the plastic wrapped metal trunk as a scratching post.

Every so often she sneaks underneath, now the presents have gone, then stands up on her back legs – her front paws in the air, battling a glinting decoration, rattling the tinsel. A couple of times the tree has rocked and shaken like a fir in a tornado, almost, but not quite, uprooted from its three pronged stand.

Then out she shoots, scampers after a toy, a feather, a ball. The tree is forgotten till next time – then used as a hiding place, scratching post, and climbing frame in turn when she feels like it.

Twelth night will see the tree demolished and returned to its cardboard box home. What will cat do then?

Lost cat

DSC_0680.JPG

Cat hidden in dusty shadow. Lost to the World.

You were smart and neat once, now slightly chipped and nicked.

No longer on display, but hidden in a corner .

Spotted paint is scuffed, dots are faded,

But you can’t leave, you are an old friend .

Will you ever see the light of day, no sign of your return to favour.

Fold yourself into the corner, stay stray until you are called back. Home.

Cat portraits

Painting cats.
I like painting cats from photographs but sometimes they don’t stay still. These are paintings of Casey and Lucy. Both were painted before I got a digital camera and although they were painted from life the cats didn’t stick around to pose!
Casey could get tangled up in anything, he climbed up shelves and sat in the middle of the road waiting for me. I had been given this kite as a Christmas present and he was determined to play with it!

Lucy on the other hand was an old lady of 21 when I painted her. She didn’t do much as she got older but she loved a fuss.

I added the patterns for both of them to make them more interesting. I’m pleased to take commissions for pet portraits if you are interested.

You’re never far from a cat

DSC_0621

I don’t know who else is a cat lover but I have two beautiful cats. In this house you are never far from either them because they don’t go out. They are happy and they have lots of toys. One of their favourite things is to chase each other from room to room, almost like they are playing a children’s game of tag.

I was thinking back to when they first arrived. They are adult cats and they were very scared. I did not know how they would react. They hid. Very well. It took us a couple of hours to find them. One was under a cupboard and the other one hid behind a large plant pot. Eventually they emerged and from then on they have been happy. They both come and sit on us and love being stroked and groomed. I’m glad we got them.

The tiger who hid

_20181201_231513

This is a half painted picture which I thought could be turned into a story.

The Tiger who hid is based on the green man myth, but instead of a human face I started to paint a cat, but with leaves hiding part of its face. I also thought of the tiger in the jungle painting by Henri Rousseau? (not sure if that’s the correct name).

I imagine the tiger protecting itself not only by the camouflage of its stripes. But also by using leaves and branches to hide. So that it becomes indistinguishable from the background. I can see the idea in my mind, the book would be full of illustrations. The Tiger would be kind and would persuade people in the end that its family should live. I don’t know if this makes sense. But it might be fun to try and put together.

Tabby

Just to show what I can do when I’m trying to paint realistically. This took about 4 hours. I saw a photo of it on an envelope. I’m taking it to the two craft fairs so I can try and get a commission or two.

Size about 6 inches square.

I’m going to charge a reasonable price. I usually undercharge but I will never get anywhere if I don’t try and ask for a decent amount ( not hundreds). I’m trying to make a small living at this so I have to be fair and friendly. But I cannot keep giving things away which I have done in the past …

Life……
